Another exception is when the dev understands the subject too well in a way that distorts their view of what's simple for them and for every one else.

Or, it started as an actual simple library that everyone used so the dev kept adding things and it ended up as a huge thing that stopped being simple long ago, but the dev never updated the name.

If any of you have worked in software dev long enough you know 1 or 2 examples of these two cases :)

fushuan ,

the same one, but it's used in a sexual context. Being the top is being the dominant one on a relationship, sexually speaking.

fushuan ,

It's not being caused by the ones providing weapons, but the attackers though?

Are you the kind of people that thells people not to help the bullied kid against the bully because it will just make them take more hits? Just surrender to the bully, easy.

fushuan ,

Endeavour, fixing issues is easy enough.

Yes I have the arch logo as a wallpaper of my PC and my phone why do you ask?

fushuan ,

Yep, I'll admit that I kind of gnomified it with the super button opening the overview (not slow since 6.0), but that's kind of the point of KDE, we can do what we want.

fushuan ,

My gripe with non android os is that they usually don't have access to bank apps, and those are a must

fushuan ,

The icons thing is because the devs didn't name their programs correctly. In KDE I can create a window rule targeting that specific window and change the window title to be their actual program name, like com.mozilla.firefox instead of Firefox, and the problem gets fixed.

fushuan , (edited )

well, it displays stuff by opening windows for applications and them icons are linked to windows, the display server needs to know which icon to assign to each window, and the applications need to assign a proper name to their window process so that the display server know how to do the linking correctly. Until applications update their code so that they set their correct full title name, we will have to change it ourselves via KDE window rules or whatever.

After a quick review it seems like this is an issue with wayland on plasma specifically, because plasma tries to access the icon name from a different place and applications haven't adapted yet.

The quick user fix I mentioned: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sungl8gWU_8&t=129s

Further info for developers: https://community.kde.org/Guidelines_and_HOWTOs/Wayland_Porting_Notes#Application_Icon

fushuan ,

I wrote some edits, it's a KDE on Wayland change that is pending on several apps, yes.

fushuan ,

Anniversary of tiannmen square I suppose, talking in to account that the latest complaint posts were about people that were banned for sharing link about it.

fushuan ,

It's more about the fact that they didn't have a webpage in their apple account where they could remotely log out, and the IT department had the physical computer so they had to either move to the department or give the department their personal password, which is bogus. Being able to remotely log out of the computer doesn't seem to be that big of an ask.

I get thay the computer should remain locked if there's no internet, but once the computer gain connectivity it should unlock if it was logged out in the user page.

fushuan ,

I'm with you that you should be able to log out remotely, but this is more of a failure in the IT department. You should have been given a PC with the apple ID already introduced, with your company mail and some password. How would they even access your PC remotely for security udpwtes if they didn't have access to your appeal id? Right, they didn't. So they gave a computer they didn't have remote access to, not properly configured, and then forced you to either move or give private information.

fushuan ,

The issue here is that while baseline apple is more secure than baseline android, a user with knowledge or a guide can improve the android security by a lot, whereas the apple baseline is also the ceiling. There's stuff you can do with iPhones but if you don't trust apple, you are kind of fucked.

Android people that mention security won't be using a stock phone from the store, they will have disabled stuff, enables alternative stuff, or even installed a completely new android based OS, and this can't be done with iPhone or iOS.

fushuan ,

Oh, I assumed that you would be forced to type your password or have enough rights to install stuff in a computer, be it in person or remotely, so I assumed that whatever 3rd party program they used required to have enough access, and that apple would use the apple id as a master password, given that it's what is being used to lock down the device itself.

Well, yet another issue with apple lol, why add a ownership id if it's not even what gives root access. Lmao.

fushuan ,

100% agree, just take into account that most people you encounter on lemmy, specially on posts about security, are in that 1% that tweak stuff and if you throw blanked statements they will think you are talking to them specifically.

fushuan ,

Apple issue then, quite the anti feature. In any case, I hope the IT team learns from it and they create a company ID or several company IDs so this doesn't happen again haha.

fushuan ,

It's not really about the hardware, is it? The option you mentioned won't enable an alternative app store, it won't enable access to android app emulators (which would be a huge boom in the open source app offering). The level of trust iPhone users give to appeal is wildly higher that what android users that tweak their phones give the manufacturers. It is what it is, but don't delude yourself in thinking that it's about what they do in the kernel level, it's about the fact that they store tons of sensitive data in their american servers and that they have an obligation to share that data with the country, and as someone from Europe that doesn't sit well with me.

fushuan ,

As a non american, all I know is that it was not that big of a fucking event, people died but with the gravity they talk about it compared to other actual big world events, you'd think that millions died.

Mind you, I'm not against them being like their stuff was serious, all I ask is about consistency. I've been called terrorist jokingly for being from the Basque country by the same people that got super offended by 911 jokes. How fucking dare them.

fushuan ,

Backlit is important because the image needs to visually bleed somewhere, that's how it "moves"

fushuan ,

Industry and industrial aren't the same. The animal industry includes local farms, since they are part of the sector/industry. Industrial farms/factories are a subsector of the industry, the ones that are the actual cancer on society.

fushuan ,

Tfw you install endeavour and after some time you consider swapping to pure arch because that icon is just so god damn perfect.

fushuan ,

I'm guessing it's "JewsAgainstIsrael", given the current geopolitical context and the stance tankies usually have on that matter.

SO: my head hurts
Me: (pick any1) Where in the head? Any reason why? Did you hit something? Anything that might have caused it so we can buy some medicine or I can cook you something or whatever?
SO: idk, it just hurts, imma lie down.

SO: I'm cold, I'm gonna take a hot shower.
Me: have you tried wearing bulkier clothes? A blanket?
SO: no. takes the third shower of the day $$
Me (later that day or in another day): force them to wear more clothes and throw a blanket at them in their chair
SO: oh, this is nice uses the blanket every day now

Me: How was your day?
SO: Bad.
Me: Anything out of the ordinary that you want to share to share the pain?
SO: No, its just bad.
Me: Do you want to watch anything, eat anything special?
SO: imma lie down.

Sorry but no, i know that they aren't vague intentionally but they are not clear at all when expressing their needs.

fushuan ,

And that's okay, but that's not what has been described here. Being the vent ear is cool too, the point where it gets frustrating is when their vent method is to just be completely exhausted and lie down in the sofa until tomorrow when they get exhausted again and repeat... I have to force down some healthier avenues for them to vent and prepare themselves so that they don't get perma exhausted in work, it just takes some work and some guessing of what they need from my part, because they sure don't communicate when tired.

fushuan ,

Of course that it seems an interrogation of you imagine me saying all those questions one after each other. That's just how I phrased the question. The problem is that they simply used to not express their needs and wants before they got to the point where they just couldn't do it. Mind you, this was way before they started going to therapy and they are getting way better at expressing their needs and wants now so that they don't break down too often.

fushuan ,

It's hard to feel heard when all you communicate is "It hurts", that doesn't really qualify and venting or letting the feelings out.

It's quite curious the amount of comments I've gotten about people telling me that they just wanting to vent, no shit. Venting usually means... talking, me putting the ear so the other person can talk and vent. I didn't summarise what they said when they complained in my comment, that was literally it.

After going to therapy they have gotten much better at expressing their complaints so that they can let out their frustrations. The thing is, autistic people have a hard time knowing how they feel, so venting is actually hard for them, that's why I was asking questions to help them identify why they felt how they felt and help them know which kind of emotions they should let out. Don't worry, if I'm going overboard they have no issue in telling me to stop now. It's been a long journey but after all this time, I usually end up telling them how they feel so they can vent because I do know them well after these years 😅.

fushuan ,

Is there anything I can do for you?

That's usually on the menu of stuff that I said, and before they went to therapy it had no effect. You see, autistic people usually don't express how they feel because they themselves don't even realise it, and the only realise that they feel bad when they break down. My SO had to go to therapy to learn to identify cues and to learn how to express themselves a bit so that they could vent or ask for help before breaking down.

We've been together for a while so I usually know what they need or they tell me they feel bad way before breaking down, but let me tell you, it was a struggle early on sometimes. It's hard to see someone you love struggling, but not doing anything to improve because they don't realise they are hurting before it's too late, day by day, week by week. We didn't know they were on the spectrum either early in the relationship so... yeah.

I was just taking a jab to the meme because that tale of them expressing themselves correctly is not true at all. xD The amount of stuff my SO used to describe as "thing", multiple times in the same sentence, and assume that I would understand what they meant because of the 5 mental leaps they did in their head that gave them and them only the context needed to know what those "things"s were, and since they understood that meant that I did, obviously... It was quite funny at times.

fushuan ,

Sorry if I implied I asked all those questions at once. It's more of a menu where I sometimes asked one or the other. My point was that they just communicated nothing once they broke down.

Alongside teaching them not to flood you with questions when you can't deal with them, remember to communicate what you can to them before you break down so that they don't feel helpless watching you break down without even being able to help or know what's going on.

As I answered in other comments, this happened mostly before my SO got diagnosed and didn't know how to deal with it, now with therapy we both deal better with it so I don't flood them and they don't leave me out of the loop of their needs and wants.

fushuan ,

That's the thing, communicating stuff before you become upset. For example, my SO used to come from work exausted and used to lie down in the sofa, slept until night, then maybe grabbed some dinner or just slept straight until the next morning. Sometimes we didn't speak at all in 2 to 3 days because they woke up earlier than me, they then went to work in a hurry, no talking in work because work takes 200% of focus, and then come back home to their date with the sofa, and end up sleeping again before I finish my work.

Now we chat about our day at lunch even if we are not together and they vent about it whenever they can so that when they come back, I can make some time for them, and they also manage work stress way better than before so they don't come back utterly exhausted every day. Learning that they could not work in the field they were working and live to tell the tale and taking the time to change fields with my support helped a lot too. The situation mentioned above was before they were diagnosed and they just bruteforced the workday in a super toxic way for them and those around them (me).

fushuan ,

I wrote basically this in another comment, they had a hard time recognising their emotional state and held until bursting out. This was way before they were diagnosed though, after a lot of therapy they are much better at identifying their state, or simply they try to keep in touch a lot more so that I can be there for them before they burn out.

As the neurotypical person in the relationship, my advice is to try to keep in tough more regularly so that your SO can detect if you are halfway through burning out so that they can help you before you become completely unavailable.

My SO also has generalised anxiety and ADHD, so I usually tell them that when they keep burning out for weeks it's really painful for me because I feel very left out, which resonates a lot with them. I guess that this helps them to do the effort of keeping me up to date so that I can let them vent, hug them, ask which kind of food they would like to uplift their spirits... and all that stuff before they burn out.

fushuan ,

It's the only desktop client that has "read on scroll" so it's a painful necessity. I'm not using that for my phone though, ugly IOS interface.

fushuan ,

Me (M) at 193(6.3) realizing that I will never be able to be a climber.

Sadge.

fushuan ,

Another comment in favour of sandisk, I was gifted a (at the time) big 8GB usb3.0 pen years ago, it has been on my keychain for basically all the time, with enoyghnspace for a live USB and separate space to store stuff.

fushuan ,

Sometimes I cover myself in blankets as a burrito, just to realise that my phone is in my pocket and I would need to un-burrito myself to take it. Long story short if anyone calls I just call them back from desktop telegram. :)

fushuan ,

Oh, here's the 4 pages of documentation of items and crafting recipes of this nodded game I'm playing that are open at all times.

Then there's the tsb with the video series I'm watching, the tab with the dropout home, other two tabs for two series I'd like to watch, about 3 different tabs that I just closed down that were opened yesterday to search some ffxiv market item prices for a friend, WhatsApp web, some Path of exile trade live tabs in case an item I've been searching for a month shows up on trade in a reasonable price to pick up the game again, the medianxl ladder to check for gear on too players, 2-3 tabs for players on the ladder to check their gears as a rough template,...

I'd say at any given time it's a minimum of 10, and I'm not being held responsible of my work browser tabs. That's more like, 4 github repos because they ask me about stuff and I forget to close them, hue, the spark docs on like 5 tabs, 3 google searches, several excels with project tracking stuff, and maybe an extra 10 to 20 tabs open depending of what I'm searching or have been asked about in the last 2 days.

fushuan ,

Hate to type this but mate, skill issue. If its taking that much memory check your addons because you fucked up somewhere. I use it with several debugging and linting addons and it runs on a virtual remote desktop where I'm lucky if I have 4GB to share between vscode and the browser with 20 tabs open.

Maybe your issue is thst you ran heavy programs through the vscode console and those registered in the task manager as vscode? Idk, but either way, skill issue :P

After announcing increased prices, Spotify to Pay Songwriters About $150 Million Less Next Year (www.billboard.com)

When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...

fushuan , (edited )

Most of them, honestly. Idk where you looked but Tidal, Amazon music, apple music, dezeer or however it's pronounced, all were available in Spain. I stocked with Tidal because of the Linux client but apparently theybalso pay artists the most so yay.

As an edit, you mentioned metal, I listen to lots of mainstream metal bands (powerwolf, system of a dawn, dragonforce, sonar arctica, blind guardian...), some other maybe not so well known ones (tyr, alestorm, korpiklaani), and some local ones that are more rock than metal (vendetta, su ta gar, kaotiko, la polla records).

fushuan ,

According to another commenter chromium on Linux is hard capped on quality, so although it's noticeable vs the web version, it's not actual Max quality. I haven't noticed it although my headphones should be able to show the difference (sony MDR 7506, I know, yes, for everything, people say that it doesn't sound nice, I don't care I love it) so idk.

fushuan ,

100% agree, it's better than all the other music services in quality on linux just because it (3rd party) offers something that has somewhat better sound quality than the basic video version of any other one, and Spotify being the only other one that has an unendorsed official native client (done by the devs in their spare time without any official support offered) is pointless because their best audio quality is trash.

fushuan ,

It's encrypted though?

You are trusting their server security and them as a company, sure, but it is encrypted against the server for sure.

It's not as good as ir could be but that's no reason to spread misinformation.

fushuan ,

And it infuriates me to no end. It's one thing to trust them and their servers and it's another thing altogether to send actual plaintext data around the net, that's crazy and it's what people are implying.

For the record, until WhatsApp implemented e2e their messages were indeed fucking plaintext, and it took a while before they were pressured into e2e. It helps for them that their platform is very mobile based vs telegram, where the service is more server based. Telegram did have enough time to implement a server based e2e 0 knowledge encryption protocol though, it's not really rocket science at this point.

fushuan ,

Tegram stores all the conversation in their servers, since you don't need to be connected in the phone or have the phone witchednon if you want to chat in the pc, or in another phone. This means that the authority is the server. WhatsApp it's not like that, if you delete a shared photo after a while it will be cached out and you will lost access to it, meaning that they don't store that stuff. The same thing happens with WhatsApp desktop or web, they stay in an infinite loading icon until you twitch on the phone or sometimes even unlock it.

This means that whatever telegram develops must not only keep the group chat encrypted in the server, but any valid client of a user must be able to decipher the content, so every client must somehow have the key to unlock the content. One way of doing it would be for every client of a single user to generate keys (which I'm sure they already do) and reform a key exchange between them, to share that way a single shared key, which is what identifies your account. Then toy could use that shared key to decipher the group chat shared key which telegram can store on their server or do whatever is done in those cases, I'm not that well versed.

The problem here lies in what happens when you delete and/or logout of all the accounts, currently you can login into the server again, because telegram has all the info required, but if they store the "shared key" then it's all moot, I guess they could store a user identifying key pair, with the private key encrypted with a password, so that it can be accessed from wherever. They should as always offer MFA and passkey alternatives to be able to identify as yourself every time you want to log into a new client, without requiring the password and so on.

This is some roughly designed idea I just had that should theoretically work, but I'm sure that there's more elegant ways to go about this.

It's work for sure to implement all of this in a secure way, provided that you have to somehow merge everything that already exists into the new encryption model, make everyone create a password and yada yada while making sure that it's as seamless as possible for users. However, I feel like it's been quite a while and that if they did not do it already, theybjist won't, we either trust them with our data or search for an alternative, and sadly there's no alternative that has all the fuzz right now.

fushuan ,

I wasn't talking about situations with compromised accounts, I was talking about legitimate accounts that were created in a typical way being converted to a zero knowledge encryption method, I was aknowledging that it's hard doing that conversion when a user might have several clients logged on (2 phones, 6 computers...).

My point was that if they have not put any motivation in the transition, they never will because the bigger the userbase, the harder for them to manage the transition. Also, I find that sad because they should have invested more effort in that instead of all the features we are getting, but whatever.

If you found the technical terms confusing, public/private keys are some sort of asymmetric "passwords" used in cryptography that secure messages, and shared keys would be symmetrical passwords. The theory between key exchanges and all around those protocols are taught in introductory courses to cryptography in bachelors and masters, and I'm sorry to say that I don't have the energy to explain more but feel free to read about the terms if you feel like it.

If you however found it confusing because I write like crap, I'm sorry for potentially offending you with the above paragraph and I'll blame my phone keyboard about it :)
