It's exaggerated but yes, this map really reminds me of many large Chinese cities. It's probably true every major city has a People's Square. I think the map is based on Beijing.

Also note that if it's just for personal use, you don't have to have a domain for HTTPS. You can self sign, or create your own certificate authority, you just need to clients to trust it. But domains can be cheap or even free, so it's better to get one so you don't have to specially configure your devices.

Is it actually running snap or just unpacking its content and running it as a normal flatpak?

吃鸡 literally means "eat chicken" but it's just an expression and here it refers to gaming. Like "eat crow" is an English idiom that makes no sense if translated literally to other languages.

Not sure it satisfies your requirements but I'm quite happy with Baïkal.

Somebody should tell him decibels go into the negative numbers

What do you guys do when you want to run unmaintained programs? (lemmy.world)

I recently wanted to run tegaki, and my experience is pretty much summed up by the meme. I consider myself fairly tech-savvy, but I just couldn't figure out how to compile it. So I just gave up, downloaded the .exe and put it into a fresh wine prefix. After installing CJK fonts, everything ran fine. Now I'm trying to get gpaint...

Pull a docker image of an old distro into an apptainer sandbox, install what you need within, then make a .sif image, should work pretty much in perpetuity. You can also try to make an Appimage.

This was just an outline of what you could do in the scenario, not a full solution. Looking up the keywords, "Apptainer" (+sandbox), ".sif", and "AppImage" should give you a starting point, and any specific questions can be answered separately. You are right that people could be jerks to beginners but this is rarely the intent. Not all discourse about Linux has to be at a beginner level, and packaging legacy software is not really a beginner topic.

    Splitwise alternative

I'm looking for a simple alternative to Splitwise to self host. Currently my partner and I use it to keep track of monthly expenses to ensure there is roughly even spending between us. Doesn't have to be complex, in fact the simpler the better as my partner prefers simple, ready to use tech. It would only need to be accessed...

Abrechnung is really good and actively developed and improving. The UI is already pretty satisfactory, and there's also an API which is needed if for example you want to bulk-import a spreadsheet, for now you have to code it a bit.

I've been using nothing but Linux at home and work for 20 years and it's news to me that these words are not equal synonyms.
