There are downsides to nuclear these days. Incredibly high cost with a massive delay before they're functioning. Solar + wind + pumped hydro + district heating is where it's at in 2024.

olafurp ,

Yeah, back in 2010 and before nuclear was the way to go but with the incredible advancements in solar and wind it's no longer the best option.

Still shame on Germany for decommissioning nuclear reactors and deciding to build Nordstream 2 and burn coal as a replacement.

olafurp ,

If you're suggesting using Nuclear as a peaker plant or to turn it off and on whenever wind/solar is not up for it then I'm sorry to say that it's not viable. Nuclear generators don't handle well being turned off and on.

Iceland, where I'm from, has had it for ages in pretty much every house.

olafurp ,

Currently all you have to do is heat up an insulated pile of sand with almost free electricity and stick a pipe in too.

olafurp ,

Because most self hosted things are free already. It doesn't apply to FOSS.

olafurp ,

Sure, it's encrypted, but there might be a way for them to decrypt it.

olafurp ,

Do you know how decryption works?

olafurp ,

They also "Didn't have them" in the past and then gave them to the NSA. 🙃

Anybody remember this site? Google used to be so good that anybody with half a brain could find a good result if they would just type a basic phrase into it.

olafurp ,

"My sweet summer child" is a very weird way to start a comment response. It sounds condescending.

olafurp ,

FF is doing great. All the have to do now is the Steam strategy. Do nothing and wait for the competition to fuck themselves over.

olafurp ,

Yeah, it's been a huge waste of resources trying to reinvent everything.

olafurp ,

Buying a used desktop is very nice for these things. You can set up a steam gaming thing.

Google Search is getting even worse for independent sites (www.theverge.com)

In February, HouseFresh managing editor Gisele Navarro called out publishers like BuzzFeed and Rolling Stone as some of the culprits that publish content about air purifiers despite a lack of expertise — but Google rewards these sites with high rankings all the same. The result is a search results page filled with SEO-first...

olafurp ,

There was a pre-Google search that was really bad. Then Google raised the standard by optimising for good results. The trick was to stay one move ahead of SEO devs. First people spammed keywords, then people spammed backlinks, etc.

The issue is now that it's very outdated and the best thing for websites to do is go spam AI articles about everything. The obvious move would be to move websites with higher specificity to the search query up.

The problem is that Google can do that and optimise for fewest actual clicks on links instead of needing to click 3 to get a result. Instead it's better to click 3 pages with 3 sets of ads then hopefully the "I got what I came for" feeling is in the goldilocks "enough to be interested but not to stop". This means more screentime, which is more ads that mean more money.

This is peak capitalism guuuys

grey and gray are both in CSS. If you've worked with CSS long enough there's a chance you've seen both. :)

olafurp ,

Maybe be more specific?

For traveling I would suggest a laptop to behave as a server but the IP address changes a lot when traveling.

I'd personally opt for something hosted at home if possible like Nextcloud and Jellyfin with static IP and port forwarding to access on the go.

Tbh though, if you just want storage on the go buying a portable 1-4TB drive that connects via USB-C is enough.

olafurp ,

I use ChatGPT for recipes. You can ask for "simple sourdough recipe for 1kg bread" and you get the same AI generated stuff with just the recipe.

olafurp ,

It looks interesting but I'd be very disappointed if someone expects me to eat with it.

Microplastic is mostly tires and fishing nets so tax those first I think.

Linux market share passes 4% for first time (arstechnica.com)

We see the nearly 33-year-old OS’s market share growing 31.3 percent from June 2023, when we last reported on Linux market share, to February. Since June, Linux usage has mostly increased gradually. Overall, there's been a big leap in usage compared to five years ago. In February 2019, Linux was reportedly on 1.58 percent of...

If that's the case, why not just go for a commercial display TV (like McD). They run virtually forever and you get them for very low prices.

Do you have a minute to talk about our lord and savior Linus Torvalds?

These project can be sped up massively if there is prior land available to use as rail. For example a road or street, too bad we don't have those.

On the upside, doing the same essay again is so much easier and usually comes out way better.

Passkeys might really kill passwords (www.theverge.com)

Passkeys: how do they work? No, like, seriously. It’s clear that the industry is increasingly betting on passkeys as a replacement for passwords, a way to use the internet that is both more secure and more user-friendly. But for all that upside, it’s not always clear how we, the normal human users, are supposed to use...

He has stock in framework laptops so Linux should be nice for him.

No, 3 million electric toothbrushes were not used in a DDoS attack (www.bleepingcomputer.com)

No, 3 million electric toothbrushes were not used in a DDoS attack::A widely reported story that 3 million electric toothbrushes were hacked with malware to conduct distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks is likely a hypothetical scenario instead of an actual attack.

I do C# dev for work also but use Linux. You'll have to use Rider for Visual Studio and Datagrip for Sql Server Management Studio. Only drawback I have is that Edit and Continue only works on dotnet > 8.0.

You might need to do a tiny bit of extra support for the launchsettings.json since you'll need to launch with kestrel server instead of IIS Express.

Legacy dotnet will need an old Ubuntu/Whatever so some docker knowledge may be required since MS didn't release a snap/flatpak of dotnet yet. 🖕

I use Linux for gaming and dev with a highly customized KDE+bash setup and I love it. :)

olafurp ,

It looks like Linux will be mainstream in India in the next decade. I'm excited since a small fraction of the incredible amount of users will become distro developers.

olafurp ,

Apple has also been known to ignore laws and pay fines for breaking them. The store is a major revenue stream so they might just do that.

olafurp ,

Try doing stuff like "Fargo season 5 discussion thread" and then just say you thought it was disappointing. You'll get a lot of replies

olafurp ,

We need something like resistor band labeling for chargers. Yellow for 1A, Green for 2A and another band for the charging standard such as PD QC3.0 and so on.

As it stands now we are going to need a station in stops to test cables.

There's no forms consensus on which one is correct. To avoid misunderstanding mathematicians use a horizontal bar.
