I was wondering what would be the alternative?

Right now the plaftorms are becoming more and more centralized as they are inseparable from the modern society.

We may say "decentralized platform" (such as the one we're on right now), but we haven't seen it taking over, and we're not sure if it ever will. Some even say it's falling behind.

Let's just say I'm taking the normie perspective here.

pastermil ,

Might as well take out all the plastic while at it.

pastermil ,

Quite a cool wallpaper. Makes me why they decided not to include it anymore.

pastermil ,

Lmao nice catch!

pastermil ,

I know it sounds crazy, but a better free alternative exists.

pastermil ,

You can start by putting Linux on that old machine. I'd use Linux Mint to begin with.

Definitely doesn't help that some people in black community (not black people in general) are entitled piece of shit who think their (ancestors') suffering is a free pass to treat everybody else like shit. Some of them are straight up black supremacists hiding behind the flag of race equality.

Google unveils Veo, a high-definition AI video generator that may rival Sora (arstechnica.com)

On Tuesday at Google I/O 2024, Google announced Veo, a new AI video-synthesis model that can create HD videos from text, image, or video prompts, similar to OpenAI's Sora. It can generate 1080p videos lasting over a minute and edit videos from written instructions, but it has not yet been released for broad use.

Are they gonna demo it like they do with Gemini?

    pastermil ,

Kobeni (from Chainsaw Man) is just Courage in human form.

    pastermil ,

Isn't Light Phone II just an Android device?

    pastermil ,

I mean, who does? They don't act like one.

    pastermil ,

What are they gonna do next, ban Linux?

    pastermil ,

I say let him have at it!

If he fail, we'll just roast the shit outta him.

If he succeed, we might get something useful (ignoring all his gloating).

    pastermil ,

Only if he fail. Either way, it's a win for us!

    Which distro? Now I'm curious.

    pastermil ,

First time I've heard about it. Anything similar with different hardware?

    pastermil ,

Hey baby, you turned my software into a hardware

    pastermil ,

Linux Mint is also an option 😉

    pastermil ,

Totally agree, especially for those who know what they're into.

For those who doesn't, I recommend Mint!

    pastermil ,

First time I've heard of this web search engine. Anyone used it?

    pastermil ,

Something something they make us buy the cure for the disease they created?

    pastermil ,

Maybe you'd disable it on the settings, but it remains enabled anyways. Then it would detect an open wifi and connect autimatically.

Or maybe the software that comes with it is buggy as hell your HDMI framerate and resolution became affected.

    pastermil ,

Do you live in a farm your whole life or something?

    pastermil ,

Most people are more aware of these things nowadays, so you may not see it as much...

    pastermil ,

    Dunno...

Wanna ask my OpenWRT router that?

Also, is Android not Linux anymore?

    pastermil ,

They don't care much for the license per-se, but they would if it affect their business.

On one of my projects, we had to be stuck with an older version of MongoDB due to the Mongo cloud service not having server in certain regions.

Since the project deals with sensitive information, that cloud service not an option. The only option that we have is to use local cloud providers. The only problem is the latest version (that we're using on most our stuff) was priced exorbitantly.

We ended up using the ones with the last version with AGPL. Had to change a bunch of our code to accomodate the downgrade.

It's easy to judge from ivory tower, but the reality in the industry is that we can't be idealists on everything.

    pastermil ,

Stricter moderation in not allowing unrelated news would be a good start.

Not to be cynical, but I've had my fair share of Elon Musk spewing bullshit that has nothing to do with anything.

    pastermil ,

Man, I'm getting tired for all this corporate apologists.

Yeah, it's easy to just say "customer should do this, customer should do that"

Why don't we ask why the customers are like that in the first place. Let's start with the fact that most consumer devices only get a few years of support.

What happens after that support ends? At best you'll be vulnerable to security exploits. At worst, you won't be able to use it in the modern world (3G, anyone?).

While I cannot blame the technological advancement, I do blame the fact that vendors like to make their stuff like black boxes.

Screen or battery broke? Gotta pay hundreds of dollars to get that specific part that doesn't work on other model (of the same brand even). Kernel 6.6 is the new LTS? Too bad your board is stuck with 4.19 due to all the vendor-specific stuff. Wanna try to embody the spirit of open source and get that vendor-specific to mainline? Too bad you cannot run it to see that it works because we locked the bootloader for reasons you can't understand.

All that bullshit, and we're still the one to blame?

    pastermil ,

As a CS grad in the trade, I can confirm.

I make my living exclusively from web development.

I'm able to apply a lot of the fundamental stuff I learned from college (e.g. algorithms, code analysis, statistics, security, etc), but by the end of the day, it all goes to the web apps.

    pastermil ,

We should never produce any plastic, at all, for any reason.

What about for medical reason? AFAIK reusing stuff for highly infectious cases is not an option.

    pastermil ,

    patient claim

So we're talking healthcare business now?
