Hey boss! Have you heard of the fediverse? Its like some new Facebook or something like that

cosmicrookie ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

I'd vote for Anal August for sure!

I deleted my account back in November when they enforced the 'pay or ok' option. I was not ok with that

Have read a lot of books since !

cosmicrookie ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

In EU you were given an option by META to pay for adfree experience or accept targeted ads

Problem 1: if you paid, they would not stop tracking you. They would just stop showing ads. They would still be able to suggest content from commercial accounts.

Problem 2: the price was unreasonable. It depended on how many accounts you have across the platforms but i believe that the price for my profile and a couple of pages was €32 every month

Problem 3: these two options replaced the option to accept untargeted ads. I was ok with untargeted but they removed the option

Their solution has since been deemed as 'not ok' by the EU data protection board

They send a mail asking to confirm my email by clicking a link.
I can't see how spam registering with those emails would work

cosmicrookie OP , (edited )
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

After signing the petition, they pop a large notification about needing to validate my account by clicking on the link in the mail they sent. If I didn't do it, the signing wouldn't count

cosmicrookie OP ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

Oh ok. Yeah maybe! From a front end user point of view it doesn't make much sense though

cosmicrookie OP ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

They still require you to confirm the email by clicking a link sent to that email, although someone mentioned that this may be an option to the creator of the petition

I do understand the requirement of not using . or + but blocking mail@ info@ seems too extreme to me.

cosmicrookie OP ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah.
I didn't have a catch all mail and have set it up now. I was just surprised and 'mildly infuriated' that they would block this

cosmicrookie OP , (edited )
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

I like that i have control of my mail, that it is not being used to track me or target ads and also that i dont need to work about storage

For me its pretty good!

cosmicrookie OP ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

I simply host it on a webserver for now.

cosmicrookie OP ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

The email i was trying to use was mail@ my actual name and surname.

It is very handy to share and easy for people to remember.

I dont feel that it needs fixing when it is perfect for me and my needs but not for some company that needs to be overly careful

cosmicrookie OP ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah i set up a catch all mail now. It just seems like a very defensive method to me.

cosmicrookie OP ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

Nonstandard email sounds so wrong!
As long are it is valid, there should be no limits. Especially if they ask you to confirm by clicking on a link in a mail

cosmicrookie ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

It gets in the way of everything all the time

That said, i have seen good and bad examples of this.

cosmicrookie ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

How in the world did you make that assumption?

Randomly getting Notion email, after having deleted my account years ago... (slrpnk.net)

Welp I guess this is the perfect example of companies not deleting your credentials and account info when asking for it... I deleted my Notion account several years ago. And completely randomly today got an email from them about data retention, assuming this is one of those "important" emails they have to send out. Sadly, years...

@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

This I would reply and CC my local data authority at the same time, asking for the info that the data authorities need when you file a complaint

Company official name, address, registration number and preferred means of communication with the data authority (phone number, email address, post adress)

cosmicrookie ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

When you ask them to delete your account they should delete your account. There is no excuse for them to have your contact information if you dont have an account with them

cosmicrookie ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

In Europe you have to opt in to newsletters. Companies are not even allowed to have the opt in field pre checked!

You activelly need to tick the opt in check box.

I hope Noland has unlimited use because he might risk having to pay a sub to use the implant that they put in his brain

cosmicrookie ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

'Have you consider running Linux on your neural implant?'

cosmicrookie ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

ARC

cosmicrookie ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

No its not
Maybe in the US? At least here, it is and has to be, very precise especially when it comes to industry quality. It is precise down to the mm!

cosmicrookie ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah sorry. The tree was originally 50ft tall so we call the pieces that. But you only get 3ft

Is like buying 1200lbs steaks because that's what the cow weighs before it gets parted

Any web site that lets you share files with people like xender ?

I remember there being apps like xender, easy share etc. which lets you share files by one person activating hotspot and the other wifi you just have to have both party close to each other and they use no data . But they are all closed source and probably spyware and its too much of a hassle to get others to download a file...

Welcome to the future! We've been expecting you

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I'm sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I'm sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I'm sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it's been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one back?

cosmicrookie ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

Especially as multilingual it is a mess!
It didn't use to be this bad!

cosmicrookie , (edited )
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

Dude... i've been thinking about your reply here a lot since you made it, and trying to understand. Why is it worse for you than for multilingual users?

Its not like i can use Spanish suggestions better than you just because i speak more than 1 language.

I dont even speak Spanish but even if i did, i couldn't use the Spanish suggestions when writing English or any other language

Facebook does not allow you to create multiple accounts though, so it is practically wrong

cosmicrookie OP ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

I left it back in November and deleted everything, but from what I see, it just keeps getting more and more complicated for no reason at all. The link between Facebook and Instagram could have been so much simpler, but it feels like a huge mess to set up and edit. Posting works well, when it works, but does not always work.

Deleting ones account was also pretty complicated.

I don't know if they do it on purpose or if they just have people make up stuff just to have people make up stuff.

cosmicrookie OP ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

You risk them deleting your additional accounts, if they find out that you have made multiple accounts, even with different emails. Seem from a business perspective, it would be way too risky to create an account like that to run your business account, because you risk it being banned. and we all know how well Facebook support works, in order to resolve conflicts like these

cosmicrookie OP , (edited )
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

It doesn't change the fact that you are breaking their rules.
You can also go 200 miles an hour on the interstate if you want and boast that you can do it based on personal experience. You won't come back to tell people of the consequences though

cosmicrookie OP ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

Business accounts are actually called pages. They are created inside their platform by personal accounts. A user can create multiple pages about anything really

cosmicrookie OP ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

I wonder if EU could force them to allow for un-tracked non personal accounts for work..

cosmicrookie OP ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

Are you AI?

cosmicrookie OP ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

I believe it is yeah!

cosmicrookie ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

The difference is that people from the US and UK are generally welcommed in other countries. People from Sudan have a much harder time being let into other countries

cosmicrookie ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

LOL

1- Its correct that its not easy to get a residence permit, but it is a lot easier if you are entering from the US/UK than if you are coming from Sudan.

2- I don't expect people leaving the US, to want to live like they did in the US. So assuming that they would want to create a similar life outside the US is kind of childish, and not even possible in most countries.

That said, it's a figure of speech. You're taking it too far and too literal

cosmicrookie ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

They are just trying to squeeze the last few drops out of it. Its the endgame now. The new yahoo!

    I thought it was a title to an article but it turn out it was someone who mistook Lemmy for a search engine

    cosmicrookie ,
    @cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

    That's what you get when Instead of Google getting better at indexing sites, the sites got better at being indexed
