I use it as a last resort backup for things that are worth the recall price if I lose them

@peter@feddit.uk avatar

It's like when steam added group chats and discord added games

@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Docker still makes sense on your own hardware. Especially if you're the type of person to try out different programs often

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

I tried this but I always end up with tea leaves floating around my cup

Cloudflare Alternative

What do you guys use to expose private IP addresses to the web? I was using the npm proxy manager with Cloudflare CDN. However, it stopped working after I changed my router (I keep getting error 521). Looking for an alternative to Cloudflare cdn so I can access my media server/self-hosted services away from LAN....

Zerotier, although it's similar to tailscale so you might have issues with it too

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

What other research can you do? You could go on the forum and ask who uses it but that's not going to be any more accurate

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

I've done it with docker swarm and it was awful, the connection latency would break the cluster constantly

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Aw man I really liked it as a concept

Normally I purposefully don't click on articles with AI generated images, this one was so bad I thought it was a really bad photoshop instead

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Yeah, there's companies out there literally destroying the planet or causing deaths and consumers don't care. They're not gonna stop using their shiny rectangle over this

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

As far as I'm aware you don't need a seperate VPS if you're using tailscale, or you don't need tailscale of you use a reverse proxy via a vps. You can just host it in the same place you're hosting the games and apps.

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

You still need a reverse proxy just doesn't need to be on a seperate server. If you want to do it without people having to install something, you may be able to use cf tunnels for the web pages but game servers definitely don't work through that and you'd have to have some sort of external forwarding. Keep in mind though that will introduce possibly an unacceptable amount of lag to the server.

Why pay for hosting a static site at all when github, cloudflare etc offer free hosting

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Does netlify not let you set a spend limit?

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

But can you set a limit to stop it going above the free tier

What's a simple logging service?

Hiya, I'm looking to keep track of my different services in hosting via Unraid. Right now I'm hosting roughly 12 different services, but would be nice to have the logs of all my services in one place, preferably with a nice GUI. Are there any such services that could easily connect to the different docker containers I have...

Loki with grafana

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Install promtail on the system where you want to get the logs from, then configure it with the paths to the log files and the address of the loki server

The truth is that for something like Facebook groups the biggest feature is that everyone is already there, and by that metric there is no alternative

PoE Single Board/Micro/Mini Computer/Server

I have an 8gb Raspberry Pi 4 that has been a workhorse for years. I keep it for my not intense but essential networking purposes, NetBoot.xyz, Homepage, etc., because I can run it over PoE (edit: Power over Ethernet), so it is always on as long as my network is up....

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

I think googling poe or poe computing will give you it

peter ,

I've got a whole powershell script I run these days on a new Windows install to remove eveything I don't need and set things how I like them

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

I wish I could move but mac OS multi-monitor support is terrible and Linux desktop gives me endless problems

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Considering that every single generation has nostalgia its baffling to me this is even news

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

You don't get the direct integration then though, as far as I'm aware there's no way to manually setup an addon

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

They must've been playing the long game then, iMessage has been irrelevant in Europe since before this law existed. Apple truly thinks of eveything

I've been saying for ages that podcasts are the last mainstream bastion of what the Internet is supposed to be. Imagine if it was the same for film and tv?

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

You can listen to most podcasts through any platform you choose, I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Thankfully Spotify's podcast platform still supplies RSS for most podcasts. The only exclusive podcast I listen to got so much backlash they had to make it non exclusive again

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

It's a podcast called Parenting Hell

What are the actual reasonable outcomes here:

  1. The search engine becomes successful and requires monetization to pay for the hosting/indexing costs
  2. The search engine does not become successful and the ever increasing cost of indexing the entire internet forces monetization or shut down
  3. You self host your own version, in which case you need to start indexing yourself (see problem #2)

If you expect any company, especially a startup, to act differently then you grossly misunderstand how companies work

Need help converting dumb switches; one w/o any lights, one w/ Hue bulbs

I'm looking for a smart home solution use two switches in my living room (EU), in order to make them just smart enough so I can control some devices. The setup isn't very complex in itself, and I'm pretty sure it's doable - I'm just unsure what I'd need in order to use these switches in a 'smart' capacity......

+1 for shelly or sonoff

@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Zigbee switches only tend to be available in north American style, not really compatible with other countries

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Which ones do you have?

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Yeah I don't know what I was talking about to be honest, they're definitely available in eu form factors

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Yeah, federation is not gonna get off the ground if the general public (who for the most part don't know or care) are thrust into it and all it's confusing quirks.

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Linux only on the main network.

Is that a security benefit?

peter ,

+1 for the shelly dimmer

I believe detached mode refers to having the wired switch act independently from the light, so what you want is attached mode

The headphones and battery pack are replaceable. I don't think I'd call this "disposable"

Snapchat still is called snapchat, the company is just called Snap.

Microsoft stole my Chrome tabs, and it wants yours, too (www.theverge.com)

Last week, I turned on my PC, installed a Windows update, and rebooted to find Microsoft Edge automatically open with the Chrome tabs I was working on before the update. I don’t use Microsoft Edge regularly, and I have Google Chrome set as my default browser. Bleary-eyed at 9AM, it took me a moment to realize that Microsoft...

The amount of issues I had last time I tried says otherwise

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Mint was the last one I tried and it was awful, really buggy and poor UX

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Mint. Had problems with device drivers, with things I used for my job not having proper software support. With having to edit config based on a dream and a whole lot of guesswork just to make some peripherals work. Being told that a config setting I use on windows need not exist on Linux because I can just buy different hardware...

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

You think it's impossible that Windows, an operating system with whole teams of people paid well to work on design and UX could be easier to use than Linux desktop which is primarily people working in their spare time?
