I have a few personal reasons why we should be opposed to Tesla, and I'm almost certain that most of my reasons don't overlap with justifications used by the radical activists.

  1. Tesla is gatekeeping their battery tech, which is objectively better than existing lithium battery cells. This means that everyone else is consuming more electricity than necessary simply so Tesla can make more profit.

  2. Lithium and cobalt are all but guaranteed to leech into the water during mining, recycling, and manufacturing. This will cause higher cancer rates and harm the surrounding environment.

  3. Lithium and cobalt are highly sought after metals, so our existing economic systems lead to extreme forms of exploitation and oppression in areas with a high amount of the mineral.

  4. Individual transportation does reduce emissions when it's entirely electric, but it's not the whole picture. Car-centric infrastructure is extremely inefficient for transporting people. The amounts of concrete, metal rebar, and plastic that goes into traveling by car will still be necessary if we just switch to EVs.

Edit: I fixed a couple points to be more accurate.

rockSlayer ,

Panasonic is being encouraged by Tesla to work with them to develop a proprietary lithium battery cell that has significant advantages over the 1865 cell. Not to mention the tech surrounding the cell, like thermal management and bms.

rockSlayer ,

You're right. I was thinking of cobalt, a different essential element in battery production. However that doesn't negate the facts on those points.

A former Gizmodo writer changed his name to ‘Slackbot’ and stayed undetected for months::Former Gizmodo writer Tom McKay managed to stay in the company’s workplace Slack even after leaving. All he had to do was change his name to “Slackbot.”

Pb is still a standard measurement. While it's not very standard to use petabit instead of TB for data storage, it's still a recognized unit.

I'm confused, do you think that systemic issues aren't a major factor in all crime, especially theft?

If a company uses "b" or "t" in it's financial numbers, then the companies should have the piss taxed out of them. There is no justifiable reason for numbers that large to be tax free in literally any context.

    rockSlayer ,

The barter economy is a myth, based on absolutely nothing other than a guy just deciding he was right with no evidence. Indigenous peoples had all sorts of complex, non market, moneyless economies. One of them is known as a gift economy, where there is competition between communities and individuals to give gifts larger than the gift they received before. A modern moneyless economic concept is a library economy: think of libraries, but for everything non-consumable.

    rockSlayer ,

Why? Library economies are moneyless, and highly adaptive to technological progression and climate change.

    rockSlayer ,

it would look more like a food bank than a library tbh, but the concept remains the same. This video is a much better primer on the topic in general

    rockSlayer ,

600k deaths worldwide. If a country wants disease funding from the Bill and Malinda Gates foundation, they have to chase down all malaria cases even if there are only a few isolated cases in the entire country. The goal is noble. The method is not.

    rockSlayer ,

His method is garbage. If he even remotely cared about people, he'd know it's a bad idea to lord millions of dollars over poor, third world countries to track down single, isolated cases of malaria when they're still greatly struggling with COVID.

    rockSlayer ,

Malaria's mechanism of transmission is exclusively through mosquito bites, it's a parasite that cannot be spread like COVID. Countries that are at high risk of malaria know how to track the disease and identify outbreaks so they can handle it correctly. Wiping out the disease would be great, but in the capitalist rules-based order, it's far too difficult to eradicate the disease. What the foundation is doing is forcing poor countries to focus on malaria for funding, which reduces their ability to respond to outbreaks of other diseases. It's a net negative for the countries that need the funds but have successfully managed malaria.

    rockSlayer ,

A library economy doesn't mean you can't own anything. If you want to own something you can make it or check it out indefinitely. For an example of this, let's think of checking out a phone.

You'd check it out indefinitely, and you can consider it yours. Since there's no money or profit incentive, the phones are designed to be durable, easily repairable, and have interoperable parts. Because the library is the means by which we manage the commons, parts are readily available and you can return the broken part (or entire phone) to be recycled and get the replacement.

    rockSlayer ,

From competitions, individual interests, passion, necessity, etc. We don't need money or markets for people to seek innovation. A library steward should also be responsible for automating means of production as best as possible, which would also drive scientific advancement.

    rockSlayer ,

Can you explain why you feel that way? What do you think drives innovation currently?

    rockSlayer ,

I feel you with existing tech, my phone will probably last me quite a while even though folding phones are pretty cool. I might have some software suggestions for contributing to phone development, but I'm not particularly interested in that either.

If we had a library economy, I'd seek out other areas I'm passionate about and contribute my piece there instead. I feel like I have a lot to contribute to computer science, and would love to drive innovation in that area. I also like my current job. I'd continue to do what I do now, even without the coercive force of money; though I'd probably scale back my working hours. Instead of asking yourself "why would I contribute to that", ask yourself "what do I want to contribute to". That's the idea behind a library economy in a moneyless society.

    rockSlayer ,

That's ok too! You shouldn't be compelled to work on something you don't want to, and you shouldn't face homelessness for wanting to take extensive breaks from performing labor. You should also be able to freely contribute to whatever has your attention at that moment. Library economies are highly adaptive to the needs of people, and there's always room for more help.
