99.9 % of my computer usage is FF and libreoffice.

Other than (maybe) initial setup there is nothing stopping “your mom” from being able to have Linux as a daily driver.

Back in the day… I was so chuffed when MS released 95, and 98 and was amazed at 2000.

But yes 8 was a horror show, and to that point— is anyone excited about a new release?

When there is really nothing wrong with XYZ machine running 10; but it is not supported in 11 and your EOL on 10; yeah there’s nothing compelling me to want a new computer

MS for a short while was or seemed happy for people to use 365 , but to me it seems like they are just shitting on windows as an os.

What email provider do you use for sign ups?

I used to use Protonmail, however the verification steps become tedious when creating unique emails for sign ups. I've switched to Tutanota despite it contravening their one account policy. What do you all use for one off emails (for sign ups etc )? Or do you prefer one of those 10 minute email sites?

I have a disk for local backups (that is the only purpose of that disk). I was wondering what would make it last longer:

  • Keep it mounted to my server permanently (current solution)
  • Keep it unmounted most of the time, mount it when I'm going to do a backup (either daily or every 3 days, I don't mind changing that) and unmounting after the backup is done.

What would be the best strategy?

Longer lasting I think; leave it powered on and warm.

Best in reality; buy 3 drives, and after you do a backup move one off site.

I love pihole, for my family it is better as it helps on all the devices. Being able to block malware and tracking is nice too
