That seems a little glib to me. Not all stories are lies, not all stories have happy endings, some victors are known now thousands of years after their death. On a cosmic timescale I suppose that, trivially, nothing matters - but, conversely, the cosmic timescale is so vast that it doesn't matter to us...

Also I couldn't really parse what you were saying in your second paragraph so I'm gonna leave that there

silasmariner ,

I'm not sure that anything can objectively be said to 'matter'. So, yeah, I guess? Things only matter to us because we.care about them, sure...

silasmariner ,

Quite a lot happened in the Wire TBF (also I think it's the strongest of the ones you've mentioned, largely for that reason..)

silasmariner ,

Hah. I'm sure once I read the rest of the responses I'll see the observation that 1 is just a slow route to 2

A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's back (www.windowscentral.com)

It's a nightmare scenario for Microsoft. The headlining feature of its new Copilot+ PC initiative, which is supposed to drive millions of PC sales over the next couple of years, is under significant fire for being what many say is a major breach of privacy and security on Windows. That feature in question is Windows Recall, a...

Look, Stallman may be a creep who women have to actively make excuses to avoid, but Torvalds sometimes gets sweary about subjects he's passionate about in developer threads. Both sides are the same!

I forgot what I was saying. Anyway

silasmariner ,

My favourite part of that list is that a bunch of reasons are implicitly gendered. E.g. 'men are more likely to have had more continuous years of employment...' - gee I sure wonder why that could be - and apparently there's just no problem there at all in their mind. 'women are more likely to work shorter hours to pick up the slack do things like raise children and make sure their habitation isn't a health hazard. Like maybe some of these bullet points aren't so much counter arguments as exactly the kind of thing we should be targeting when considering the pay gap. Why is it culturally acceptable that women should do all a disproportionate amount of household chores? And let's also note that there's also been research that suggests that wages for specialist fields have historically shifted to reflect the balance of men Vs women in the field. Why is teaching so low paid now? Why is software engineering more highly paid. Stupid list, SMH

silasmariner ,

Depends on your job, and what it's being offset against. Some workplaces care more about your work that your office hours. OTOH some workplaces are run by psychotic control freaks who've forgotten what the point is 🤷

silasmariner ,

Yeah that's a good point actually, although in those cases you usually can't pull a 2 hour lunch

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information (futurism.com)

You know how Google's new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won't slide off (pssst...please don't do this.)...

silasmariner ,

Literally doesn't matter; sometimes it's checking for indicators in your mouse movement, sometimes it's checking your cookies... It never actually cares if you've correctly identified or not.

silasmariner ,

And I'd be thrilled if that material were quarantined somewhere 😅

silasmariner ,

Oversaturation from the presentation format

silasmariner ,

Honestly by that point I'll probably be back into it

silasmariner ,

I don't think that really addresses the comment you're responding to

silasmariner ,

Yes, and I guess I took the post you responded to be aware of that, whilst expressing frustration with the initial post regardless - presumably because it phrased this as an action of class warfare rather than a feature common to all value-for-money exchanges where demand exceeds supply...

silasmariner ,

Nah, don't think that's class in general tbh, but in the context of land ownership there is a pretty strong history of association between the two

silasmariner ,

If serantek jumped of a bridge would you do it?

silasmariner ,

I kinda look at it and think 'who writes unstructured dB inserts with unescaped string interpolation in 2024?'

UK Trial: Pornhub's Chatbot Halts Millions from Accessing Child Abuse Content (www.wired.com)

A trial program conducted by Pornhub in collaboration with UK-based child protection organizations aimed to deter users from searching for child abuse material (CSAM) on its website. Whenever CSAM-related terms were searched, a warning message and a chatbot appeared, directing users to support services. The trial reported a...

silasmariner ,

wree people really expecting to find that content on PornHub?

Welcome to the internet 😂 where people constantly disappoint/surprise you (what word is that? Dissurprise? Disurprint?

silasmariner ,

Yeah these articles are boring and there's no substance to them. Much like everything generated by AI lol

Jensen Huang says kids shouldn't learn to code — they should leave it up to AI. (www.tomshardware.com)

Jensen Huang says kids shouldn't learn to code — they should leave it up to AI.::At the recent World Government Summit in Dubai, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made a counterintuitive break with tech leader wisdom by saying that programming is no longer a vital skill due to the AI revolution.

Producer of calculators says kids don't need to learn maths, they just need a calculator

silasmariner ,

For a younger age range you might be right, but in general that's not true; the approximation via a Fourier series is definitely something we teach kids. We don't generally expect people to be able to actually calculate it at the speed of a calculator, sure, but at least it's tested whether they can derive the expansion.

silasmariner ,

I mean, it's red in the middle. That's not normal for a kiwi. Big fan, never seen these
