So, does PiHole work against this threat? I don’t believe I’ve seen an ad on Windows 11 yet on my desktop, but it’s firmly behind a PiHole and never leaves the house (because desktop)… so either I’m lucky, missing something, or it’s working.

I mean, I basically just boot it up to game and backup CDs to FLAC and such, so maybe I’m just missing things.

And Yes, as someone who has used linux since 1995, I know I can probably do those things in Linux at this point, but I couldn’t when I set it up and since it’s working I’ve got other things higher on my list to do.

Our shop has two options (for security and management, they keep the options lean). Dell Windows 11 machines and Mac. The suckiness of the Dell ecosystem, combined with Windows 11 being fairly terrible, has pushed most all of my colleagues over to Mac over the last few years. Even most of the ASP.NET developers are on Mac at this point. This just solidifies that direction even further.

Ours basically added MacOS as an option because they didn’t want to manage Linux and there are standard security tools for it. I don’t mind MacOS, it has its quirks, but it beats W11. I had an HP with Linux there before the company decided to drop it and I do miss it, but knowing I’d have to now have a Dell with Linux if they still had the option, I’ll take the Apple hardware knowing all the issues the windows guys have.

If your cybersecurity and/or SecOps team isn’t working 40 hrs a week, you’re either WAY over staffed or you’re missing out on a lot of proactive security work. Ours has a massive backlog of tickets and is working proactively on protecting and preventing incursions and security incidents.

As a “prosumer” photographer (I do semi-pro landscape photography mostly, with a little astrophotography as a hobby when the sky is clear enough), I’ve been really happy with Affinity Photo over the Adobe suite. Definitely recommend. I just hope they keep their quality up since being bought out.

One thing I like to tell people with that attitude is: whatever someone does, there’s always someone else who will see it as an example and challenge to do it “better”. Do you want to be the company that started that chain? Are you prepared to compete in that race?

For something borderline malware, someone will take your lead and make it “better malware”. If you are not prepared to respond in kind, then why did you even go there? If you’re not ready to be known as the top of the line malware creator, why start the product line?

As long as you’re not using DNSSEC, you can easily run your own. I’ve been running a PiHole for years now, it can pull in block lists and such from various sources, it’d be fairly easy to add a list to pull in automatically that include extra records. Those could be served from anywhere. Torrents, git repos, http calls, etc.

Definitely. Though I’ll add that I ran PiHole + PiVPN on a Zero W ($10) for years. I upgraded it to a Pi Zero W 2 ($15 with extra cores) but I found that it had terrible packet drops, so I had to add a $15 usb wired adapter to it. I can max my upload speeds over vpn and dns is super low latency.

My iPhone 6 was still getting security updates last year. Battery lasted all day (I replaced it myself 2yrs before that). Solid phone. Handed it down to my daughter. Definitely at that point with technology that the requirements for a phone aren’t going up as fast as tech has so there’s less reason to replace things all the time. My last PC was up to 12years before I turned it into a server and built a new one.

Not sure where you got that, my iPhone 6 was still getting OS updates last year (mostly security ones). I didn’t have any issues with the App Store either. Now there were a few apps like Pokémon Go that the phone couldn’t handle, but that’d be true io any old PC. Devs gear their apps to the larger percentage of devices so they can leverage the newer tech. Progress is what it is. Devs aren’t going to code for a 10yo phone if 0.5% of people have it.

To each their own. I’ve personally got a 14” MBP (which is physically the same size as my 13” was, they just have smaller bezels) and work provides me a 16” MBP. The 16 is unwieldy, massive, heavy, too large on my lap, barely fits in my laptop bag, and is a general pain to lug around. Every time I use it I’m reminded of how much I’m glad I got the 14”instead. I feel like the 16 is the worst of both worlds. It’s too big to truly be a portable, machine, but too small to do real work on. Sometimes I’ll think “I wish I had more screen real estate” on the 14, but I do on the 16 as well, so it doesn’t really solve the issue while also being large and heavy.

In short, it depends on what you like, and what you need to do. Being an ultraportable is a big plus and there are monitors in most places I need more space anyway.

I had one for two years and it stopped being a router. Was my third router in like 5 yrs. I switched to a small Ubiquiti setup and my speeds tripled as well as improving my wifi coverage. It’s been rock solid for 6+ years now. Plus I can easily swap out the access point when technology upgrades easily. Definitely recommend.

I see tons of Mach E’s around here. Not as many as Teslas yet, but I see on average two to three a day, which tracks to Teslas about 2 yrs ago in this area. So give it a bit of time. I’d seriously consider one if I was in the market for a new car. I just wish they didn’t call a small SUV a Mustang. “Domestic” US manufacturers are catching up.

That said, I’d love a Chinese 10-15k EV as long as it passed US crash standards and had a decent warranty. Competition is a good thing.

Honestly, if the search results are good, anonymized, and consistent, I’m not worried about not using Google’s index. In all honesty, I’m much prefer it did NOT use Google. The further I can distance myself from their shady SEO/SEM practices, results stuffing, large site favoring, and monetization techniques, the better.

That’s not really saying much if that’s all their shooting for. My last two desktops lasted 12+ years and just turned into severs afterwards. My 2013 MBP just got replaced as my daily driver last year and still works as a backup in a pinch. I use a Toshiba Haswell Intel laptop from 2013 as a dev kubernetes cluster. Unless you’re doing something wrong or need to be cutting edge, you should easily get 10yrs out of it. I want to know if I can get 20-30 out of this framework laptop, in theory I’d be possible with replacement parts and such. If framework is in business that long at last.
