The irony of a billion dollar company losing my personal info and helpfully offering me credit monitoring service from the other billion dollar company that lost my info. It’s so good.

Throw into the mix: I had to do business with AT&T because they were the only ISP available to my Appartment complex. I never had the choice to not do business with these companies.

Equifax handles my company’s payroll.

Demographics Professor Warns that by 2531, Everyone in Japan Will be Named Sato (www.spoon-tamago.com)

Despite today's date, this is not an April Fool's prank. At a press conference in Tokyo last weekend, professor Hiroshi Yoshida from the Tohoku University Research Center for Aged Economy and Society, sounded the alarm bell for a looming crisis. By the year 2531, e

Ah, damn. I wish I could read their paper (article doesn’t mention a translation). That’s incredibly interesting!

From the article, it is because 1.83% of the population in Japan has a last name of Sato (and also I assume probably because of their low immigration). A law in Japan forces married women to take their husband’s name.

I wonder if there is a number like that for the US? Like if 10% of the population had a last name of Smith, would we all become Mr/Ms Smith after x years? Do all countries converge to a single name after a finite amount of years?

Will the whole world be Wang after x million years?

    You are always free to host your own lemmy instance. Then you can choose to federate with whoever you want.

    If I hosted an instance, I wouldn’t want to host hate speech or weird porn, and it would also be my right to not do so.

    I also wouldn’t want to bother moderating a lemmy instance for people I didn’t know, and having to hear their demands for what they want to see/not see. That’s just me, personally and I’m glad there are people out there doing the work for me.

    What I’m saying is, if you’re going to interact with a platform with possibly millions of users there’s going to be ground rules, and those take time to agree on. Lemmy is unique in that you can move to an instance that fits you better. I don’t think social media should be monetized, but we can’t ignore they take time and money to run. You have to compromise on somethings sometimes.

    Or you can just run your own.

    You might find friends here if you weren’t so combative. This community is full of socialists, communists and other related left-leaning folks, not democrats.

    We still see republicans for who they are: fascists, in the traditional meaning of the word, not as a catch-all insult for people we don’t like.

    Maybe I’m wrong but I think the fediverse isn’t quite that fragile. Instances can always close new sign ups if they’re overwhelmed. More users means more donations and more people likely to self host, too.

    I guess we could run into real issues if fediverse infrastructure doesn’t scale well (example: required server resources scale exponentially with more users instead of linearly)

    In extreme circumstances instances can defederate from larger ones if their mod teams are overwhelmed (obviously this isn’t a good solution but it is something beehaw.org is doing/did with lemmy.world)

    I’m just going to come out and say it: this joke is old and the comic is gross.

    A woman is literally objectified here. That’s the punch line. He wants to use this woman like he used an object. In the movie he did not fuck the volley ball so the humor is supposed to be from the shock.

    Please don’t explain to me how she’s a prostitute. You can see in the comic she’s surprised/unhappy. Sex workers deserve respect. This comic feels like punching down.

    If you type me a book about how I’m wrong, I’m not going to respond. I can already see this has 500+ upvotes, my opinion is unpopular I know.

    urist , (edited )
    @urist@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    No, because the movie is about WW2. Nazis are part of the setting.

    This is a "joke", on my feed. There is no other content here. Tom Hanks was not cruel to women in the movie.

    Unless you are implying that by viewing Lemmy I should get used to casual objectification of women for basic and old jokes, then I suppose that's a great point, Lemmy is very much like that.

    Edit: A better comparison is a racist joke. Even if the "butt" of the joke is "haha that guy is racist", I don't want the N word showing up on my feed, either.

    urist ,
    @urist@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    I totally understand all of this about the joke. I understand Tom Hank's character is meant to be the villain.

    The author drew this. He thought the world needed it. The objectification of woman is part of the punchline. This is why it's punching down: The author used the objectification of woman (a real problem that woman experience in their life) to serve the punchline. It makes no real critique of the male character here, it simply presents him and his actions. Can you have bad characters in a non-problematic comic? Yes. Is this happening here? I'd argue no, because a misogynist can just as easily laugh at this comic for misogynist reasons.

    I'm just pointing out the comic is gross. If you found it funny I don't think you're a bad person. I just don't think it deserves to be here without someone complaining (which I am doing).

    She looks like she wasn’t told this was part of their appointment. In fact, she looks unhappy about it. No context is explained to her and we don’t know if she would have agreed to meet him if he had asked before hand.

    In this comic, she is being used. If you think this is OK just because she is being paid for sex, this is one of the things I don’t like about this comic. Sex workers share their body with other people, safety and consent are extremely important. Sex workers deserve basic human respect, which is not shown here

    Palworld is $30 on steam. It’s a litttle expensive for an indie game but I’ve gotten my money’s worth already. It’s not perfect but I wasn’t expecting a AAA title. Honestly I’m just impressed multiplayer works as well as it does. I also appreciate that they didn’t shoehorn any awful cutscenes in. No story > bad story. It also runs pretty great, even though my computer is older and I’m using proton/linux.

    Compare Pokémon scarlet, $70. Laggy. Unpolished. Missing features from previous games. Unskippable cutscenes with characters just standing around talking to each other. Boring basic story. Nothing to do at the end of the game (no battle tower). No new fun features (the open world feels empty and ugly, compare BotW/TotK). It’s too open, there is no Mt Moon to get lost in.

    Even if the team makes no further improvements I’m still having fun with palworld. I don’t see myself ever replaying scarlet.

    Yea I'm with sheeple

    I don't think my buying habbits are going to communicate anything to a company. I buy what looks fun to play. "Real" pokemon games look like a worse and worse buy, and that's just how it is. I don't expect them to change their development cycle at all.

    At best, I hope Palworld's (and cassette beast's) success attracts better companies to make their own version. If this lights a fire under gamefreak's butt I will be extremely (and happily) surprised.

    urist ,
    @urist@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    Cassette beasts is awesome. I hope we can get more good monster collection games. I need to find the time to try palworld.

    urist ,
    @urist@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    I mean, that’s fair. I wasn’t expecting game-of-the-year out of it. I really don’t care about stock assets as long as they don’t distract from the game.

    I’ll be totally honest though: pokemon is one of the highest grossing media franchises of all time, I couldn’t care less about folks taking good ideas from them. Their new games are clearly rushed and play badly with bad stories.

    I switched back to Linux about a year ago after taking about a 10 year break, and I installed gnome without even considering another option (because it’s good enough right?)

    It’s completely different than what I remember and I hate it. I want to switch to something else but that is now a “someday” project.

    I remember when it had a cute footprint where the “start button” used to be. It’s so different. I should have went with xfce or something. Maybe I should try cinnamon.

    WoW is even worse than that.

    When the player base on your server dies and there are no raiding guilds left there it costs like $20 to move your character. Per character.

    FOSS software demonstrates that one of the suppositions of capitalism - that innovation is primarily driven by profit motive - is incorrect. Humans want to help each other. People want to improve the world even if they’re not paid for it.
