How does this work with the VM method? Or is this only needed during the install process?

warmaster ,

Hi, this looks amazing, I'll try it ! How is Pocketbase? What are your thoughts working with it?

Also, have you thought about federating trails? It would be amazing we could build a decentralized alternative to the big corps.

Local LLMs have been supported via the Ollama integration since Home Assistant 2024.4. Ollama and the major open source LLM models are not tuned for tool calling, so this has to be built from scratch and was not done in time for this release. We’re collaborating with NVIDIA to get this working – they showed a prototype last week.

Are all Ollama-supported algos mediocre? Which ones would be better?

SMB, FTP, or NFS for NAS + server?

I am running a NAS that needs to connect to a server (the NAS isn't powerful enough). I also need to connect my NAS to a Windows, Mac, and Linux device (Linux being the most important, then Mac, then Windows). Out of SMB, FTP, and NFS, which one would be the best, quickest, and most secure for my situation? My NAS supports...

How is print books dead ?

https://www.statista.com/chart/24709/e-book-and-printed-book-penetration/

And that's only units, in terms of revenue, ebooks is still pocket change in comparison.

warmaster ,

What other long-form text format has beaten print books ?

warmaster ,

I am trying to understand what's the argument behind your statement. I mean, there are more books being published than ever and there are more readers than ever. So, I fail to imagine how are books dead. That's why I am asking these questions.

warmaster ,

YouTube is video, it replaced TV. Podcasts and music streaming replaced the radio. Why should I compare books to another medium? In fact, back in the TV and radio era, more people consumed thant kimd of media instead of books, and that stays true today, yes. More people watch youtube than read books. I bet more people play games than read a book. But it's comparing different kinds of media. It would be like saying podcasts are dead because more people consume pictures and video on instagram.

Hey Copilot, please disable telemetry

I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that.

warmaster ,

What better way to sell devices than by halfassing them to oblivion?

warmaster ,

Is it ? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

warmaster ,

No surgery needed. Just insert the ElonDongle into your rear port to upgrade your ElonOS. The process might be a bit stretchy, be patient and don't remove the ElonDongle before it finishes the load to avoid unwanted residue leaking out of the port.

warmaster ,

Will companies ever stop selling snake oil?

No.

warmaster ,

"Sorry guys, Elon is experiencing technical difficulties, please remain patient while we bugfix his Neuralink and then update it to Evil Overlord OS v0.2 alpha to his Neuralink"

For doing chores, going to work, school, listening to your SO complain about something. The applications are limitless!

warmaster ,

Check out the other Ublue projects, there are slimmer alternatives in case you won't do any gaming.

warmaster ,

OK, but you remove all gun safety mechanisms. If you shoot yourselves in the balls, we encrypt everything back.

warmaster ,

Holy parametricity!

This is insane, so much boards supported, even mini-itx!

warmaster ,

I can't wait until the AI bubble finally pops.

warmaster ,

It's popular because people want this to be real, but it's just a promise. The actual thing can't run without crapping it's pants. Even if you manage to run it fine, there will be an update that will break everything.

People think about Red vs. Blue, but the world is ruled by Purple.

The Blockhain idea is actually great, crypto-currency is the scam. People need to learn differentiate.

Or leave an audit trail for a logistics business for example.

There are a gazillion use cases, most overlooked because of the coin stench.

Linux Server Distros:

  • Ubuntu Server = easier but with more bullshit out of the box (eg. snaps)
  • Debian Stable = a tad bit harder because it's cleaner out of the box.
  • Fedora Server = clean and easy, documentation may be a bit harder to follow, less community tutorials.
  • Arch & others = Just no. You don't want a rolling release for a server. You want older and thus stable, tested, software and drivers.

If you want a distro for general use:

  • Linux Mint = easiest of the bunch, but it has old packages that may not offer the best environment for gaming.

  • Fedora Based distros = middle ground between ubuntu based distros like Mint, and rolling release distros like Arch.

  • Arch based distros = bleeding edge drivers and packages (for better or worse), best for gaming. Manjaro could work for you, as it is not fully Arch.

  • Bazzite OS = It's an immutable Fedora based distro but with Arch customized to make it work like Steam OS all inside a container. It's unbreakable, easy to use, and game-ready. Has AMD & NVIDIA images ready to go.

My recommendation is to flash Ventoy on a thumbdrive load it up with all the recommended distros, and proceed to test drive the ones you think might work for you, and only time will tell which one is the best for your specific needs.

Google Maps is impossible. They have more info on places and traffic based routing. There are no real alternatives.

warmaster ,

The UI is better than Osmand and it's better than Google maps for trail running, but it doesn't have traffic info, making it unusable for driving in populated areas.

warmaster ,

Maybe he thought he would fuck up the charger.

warmaster ,

Well, forums are not real time, and that's what most people these days want apparently.

So, on to the alternatives:

Element / Matrix:

  • Lackluster moderation tools
  • Voice channels not ready
  • Signing up is hard / federation not well explained

Revolt Chat

  • Run by very talented kiddies
  • Not stable
  • Not easily self-hostable
warmaster ,

If I understand correctly, you are proving my point by saying people chose Discord over others, and then you list their reasons.

warmaster ,

Pardon me if I expressed myself incorrectly, what I meant is that they prefer real time chat (for whatever reason) over any alternatives.

warmaster ,

Please make a lemmy post about it with your findings, and link it from your comment.

warmaster ,

In a selfhosted scenario, but what about their cloud service?

I need a truly open source Cosmos Server replacement that can manage KVM, Docker containers, networks and storage. So far my only option is to use Proxmox and run Docker in a VM. Dockge lacks lots of features in comparison to Cosmos Server.

I haven't found that category nor Cosmos Server in slfhst apps. Any ideas?

I thought the same about Smart TV's. Now there's no escape. You can only block it's network traffic.

PSA: Docker nukes your firewall rules and replaces them with its own.

I use nftables to set my firewall rules. I typically manually configure the rules myself. Recently, I just happened to dump the ruleset, and, much to my surprise, my config was gone, and it was replaced with an enourmous amount of extremely cryptic firewall rules. After a quick examination of the rules, I found that it was...

Ok that sounds intetesting, I've found Cockpit easier to use than Proxmox, I'm new to virtualization and I don't want do nesting... I fear it will complicate things when I'll need to do GPU passthrough.

How is Podman integrated into Cockpit?

Also, I had so much trouble trying to bridge my Home Assistant VM to my LAN. Are there any tutorials on how to do this from Cockpit?

warmaster ,

bridge devices only work over Ethernet

Yes, I want to reach my HA VM from my LAN connected devices.
