The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

whoreticulture ,

They're taking about emissions, not energy use. You have a reading comprehension issue. The emissions are from the energy production. It's logical to say that a, largely pointless, technology using high amounts of electricity cause emissions through the generation of electricity to power the pointless AI tech.

whoreticulture ,

Difference is that AI is absolutely pointless lmao

whoreticulture ,

Scientists analyze data using statistics. I don't see how and LLM helps with that. And it barely helps with programming, not to the extent that it is worth the impact.

whoreticulture ,

I didn't miscomprehend, you just disagree with my reasonable assertion that AI is pointless and sucks. Hope this helps!

whoreticulture ,

I have one, it's nice because it actually fits in my pocket and has a stable center of gravity. Every other phone I've had would regularly fall out of my pockets, and that's how they would become broken or lost. I bought mine used last year, and it's still in great condition.

whoreticulture ,

Nonprofit ... crowd funded... build it and all you need afterward are paying for servers. Then you're just doing donations like Wikipedia. How much would would it cost to maintain such servers? Seems fundable by a wealthy liberal.

whoreticulture ,

You know somehow wikipedia maintains it's integrity pretty well.

whoreticulture ,

Well, I don't think the content is objective. There are many politically contentious articles and they have systems, disclaimers, and discussions to try to deal with it.

I think the moderators would be locals looking over an entire neighborhood, sort of like our Lemmy mods.

whoreticulture ,

Yeah that's kinda what I meant by the wealthy liberal thing. Make something good enough and you only need a couple good donors.

whoreticulture ,

Guys just pay for a good app-blocking app. You don't have to get an entirely new phone to do this. They work great.

whoreticulture ,

jfc not everyone is a man

whoreticulture ,

🤷🏻‍♂️ true but, I do like having access to social media as addictive as they are designed to be. it keeps me in touch with people, local activism, pop culture

whoreticulture ,

You can completely block the social media apps from your phone then. Anything that encourages someone with a fully functional phone to go out and buy another one is a waste of resources.

I do like to disconnect, which is why I have the app blockers lol

whoreticulture ,

lmao calm down.

if you're worried about planned obsolescence... buy a fair phone? or a Samsung with a replaceable battery? (they sell those) ... and put an app blocker on it? tons of people hold on to their phone for more than three years. iPhone 6s kinda have a cult following at this point. the problems of screen addiction and planned obsolescence do not require a shiny new dumbphone.

it costs less than $100 to replace the battery on your phone, that is way less than a new phone. it's way less than a used phone. take care of it, clean out the storage ... you're good.

buy a new phone if you want, if you replace your working phone with this it's pretty shitty though, and the people I have seen with these phones usually just like ... have two phones. the market for only having a dumb phone is extremely small so any company that makes these is going to inevitably end up pushing extraneous devices on people in order to turn a profit. seems like this ticks people's boxes for "buying a new gadget" as well as "being less online", it's a total gimmick. I don't think you need a whole new phone to do something an app on your existing phone can do.

whoreticulture ,

People can find purpose by joining a cult lmao what's your point

whoreticulture ,

There are existing technologies that allow quadriplegics to use computers... that don't involve brain chips. It's sad that the only way he had access to such technology was by being a human test subject.

whoreticulture ,

Did you put your information somewhere they could find it before you got the patent? If you have authorship doesn't that mean you have grounds to sue?

whoreticulture ,

This person was just expressing their surprise. Why are you so pissy lmao

whoreticulture ,

There are tons of reasons to take nude photos... you often have to send in nude photos for the beginning stages of surgery consultations.

And sexting is fun.

This comment comes across insanely judgemental of the individual, when the issue is that Apple deleting data and thus violating privacy.

whoreticulture ,

It's scandalous regardless. The nudes just highlight the danger of this.

whoreticulture ,

"I don't understand why people have sex and then complain when they can't get an abortion because of Roe v Wade being appealed."

This is what you sound like. Blame the system, not the individual for having a better sex life than you.

whoreticulture ,

You've never been in a long distance relationship? And as I said, some people need to take nudes for medical reasons. It's not a hypothetical situation, I know multiple people who have done this.

It's fine that you have your own personal philosophy for taking nudes, but your post is coming off as judgemental of those who do.

It's not the individual's fault, it's Apple's fault for being unclear about what the delete feature is actually doing.

whoreticulture ,

Ah okay. I didn't interpret this as only nudes being undeleted, so I was reading your comment in that light. Understandable.

whoreticulture ,

The tease of getting a well-lit nude in the middle of the workday? 🧑🏻‍🍳🤌🏻💋

It's all about the antici ..... pation.

whoreticulture ,

🔥🔥 YES

whoreticulture ,

What the fuck does self love have to do with political violence.

whoreticulture , (edited )

As long as violence isn't being actively enacted on me and my loved ones, I agree. But otherwise, I don't see how this defends against people with a strong will for power. Violence does exist, and right now the state has a monopoly on violence to defend the interests of a select few and they are not hesitant to use it.

whoreticulture , (edited )

Uber was originally marketed as ride-sharing, too. Just an app to find people going the same way. Of course, I'm fairly sure that their current iterations was the plan all along as anyone with enough business sense to start those companies must have predicted that there would be people who take on Uber/AirBnB as a primary source of income. But sharing your house or planning a shared trip is much more palatable than "Landlords but Worse".

whoreticulture ,

Yeah, there's an interest in Y2K era tech amongst some gen-Z people. I think it's cool, idk why you're hating.

whoreticulture ,

idk I use my phone to play chess, wingspan, Root, all kinds of games. There are a lot of really cool text adventures on mobile, plus Pokemon Go is mobile only. You can even play Minecraft on your phone ...

On Instagram I usually just see pictures about my friends lives, news, local events. The most well informed people I know are all active on social media. If all your kids are doing is playing console video games, they'll be disconnected. The most cutting edge news is on social media, and has been for years now. My phone is just a more comfortable way to do things. I could play chess and read the news on my laptop, but I don't want to.

This just reads like moral panic over tech you don't like ... you know, people used to fear-monger about books being too addictive and bad for you.

whoreticulture ,

How is Lemmy better than reddit for doomscrolling?

whoreticulture ,

Just set up an app blocker on your phone. There are some that are pretty intense, they work great.

whoreticulture ,

I can't think of a single thing AI does that is worth the amount of energy consumption.

whoreticulture ,

Sounds useful, but not at all worth the amount of energy being used to produce AI. You could just use that energy to feed/house people who could do the labor of denoising.

whoreticulture ,

It's a game where you walk around and catch pokemon... why where there suddenly cease to be demand for that the premise is great. Not my thing but I get why people are into it.

whoreticulture ,

I don't see how going to the library is such a big hurdle? The closest library to me is less than ten minutes drive, and on the way to a lot of stuff. I don't know this seems like a kind of insane objection. If you're poor, it's not like you're just gonna spend $200 on a new tool anyway because you can't. In my experience I'm more likely to just try to make do with the crappy alternative I have available.

This take just seems really privileged. The biggest barrier for a lot of people isn't the time - it's affording the tools in the first place.

whoreticulture ,

There's a local store that rents outdoors gear (climbing stuff, camping supplies etc), it's for profit and it's great. Would be way cooler if it were a library, but the local business is totally affordable and easy.

I've used it several times. My friends and I plan an outing and plan supply pickup/dropoff as part of the outing.

whoreticulture ,

I don't really see a problem with a model of companies creating fewer, more durable/expensive items that everyone can share.

whoreticulture ,

Nah I do biology as a hobby and also for work, it's great. There are the usual trappings of work, but I've had jobs I'm not passionate about and it's definitely worse lol. I feel like what you're saying is a cope people say when they don't follow their passions.

whoreticulture ,

You think people in trades don't think at work? This is actually just classism or something idk. You really don't think electricians, contractors, plumbers etc aren't problem solving on the daily? We're not talking about working on a factory line.

whoreticulture ,

Why? Honestly, what do you dislike about being outside?

whoreticulture ,

You're probably an asshole to everyone around you if you think the only intellectual jobs are ones that are done sitting at a desk.

whoreticulture ,

You know, there are more options than food service or IT lol

whoreticulture ,

Right because IT workers are philosophizing through setting up networks okay

whoreticulture ,

That's not the same thing, I go outdoors constantly and don't see people. What you have isn't a dislike of the outdoors, it's agoraphobia.

whoreticulture ,

Yo someone else already wrote up examples. But you could look at any advanced woodworking video for custom furniture and you'll see.

whoreticulture ,

You kind of seem like the most insufferable person imaginable so honestly, cool. Stay inside by yourself.
