I'm not sure if I like this news or not... It's good news for Windows users for sure... But somebody could think then "windows is not so bad" and lose the momentum to migrate to libre software, which is IMHO the future if we are to hope for a non dystopian one.
Linux yes or yes, but probably in dual boot for several reasons (Drivers, certain needed soft, etc). The perfect OS don't exist, because of this using both, Windows and Linux is the best choice, depending on the use
I think MS talked about how they handle detection. And it isn't based on Geolocation, but the choosen install language/region. If you choose one where the DMA applies, you will get the DMA options. For english speakers there should be a Euope (English) install option.
Edit: is this about their not blocking Microsoft queries? I see that outcry caused them to pivot away from that stance but that story gives me pause. Is there even a privacy search engine to replace them?
With all the DMA stuff going around I hope the EU take some real steps to Linux and FOSS in general. I mean come on, I can be root by design and fuckup my system if I want to - this is real freedom, gentlemen 🇪🇺
sure some ppl still use myspace, tidal or google search like its the 00s
but lets be real: with the rise of AI it is also tze end of US based services - as meta and google pointed out it is impossible to gate AI.
the only thing that will prevail is FOSS. the later you join, the more likely you'll be the dinosaur turning into a fossil.
over and over again dumb twats keep rooting for their echochamber of stupid and 10 years later they crawl back to society and like drop whatsapp for signal, office CD ISO for googledocs and so on.
right now i think the biggest indicator if being a twat is owning anything from apple. they are currently the biggest stronghold of stupid.
geez, remember my dad rooting for VHS and DVD....put in so much money and now it is worth nothing and everyone knows he was a dumb twat. so see an iPhone user 8 think of how stupid people are.
"The European Commission has exempted Bing and Microsoft Edge from DMA oversight due to their non-dominant market position."
I wonder if Microsoft's legal department advised Nadella to abide by the spirit of the law (despite the exemption) to prevent possible headaches in the future.
This is 👍 news. I don't use Edge. Google is my search engine, not Bing. 1 may change Edge's default search engine, but I never bothered.
Microsoft has been betting big on ai. They may be OK with "competition", "fair playing field" or "pro-choice" things if ai will give them billions in profit in the future.
It's 👍 that alternativeto.net is still around. I've been going there to find alternate programs.
Maybe, but the N version was in response of another regulation that was less stringent in enforcement.
If they only do it in the N version, all other versions become prohibited to sell in the EU. I'd guess this is all versions, and the EU region lock is enforced differently.
