They actually don't. They closed their only mine in 2023. China and Congo are the world suppliers. And their trade war with China leaves Congo the only supplier for them.
Oh my bad. I was completely wrong about America producing cobalt locally. It does seem they import most from Africa.
I did get figures that support my statement that most of the demand is driven by China. I checked through 2021, 2022 and 2023 and China is a large majority of the demand and demand increase. America makes up less than 10% of global ev sales and their demand is not "booming" when compared with the Chinese ev demand increases.
Here's a paragraph that outlines what I'm saying. Ev now accounts for almost half of all cobalt demand and is increasing year on year.
the passenger segment accounted for 87% of EV demand in 2023 and is the largest demand
driver over the forecast period. Global passenger EV sales rose to 13.8 million
units in 2023, up 33% y/y – a fall from 58% y/y growth in 2022. Of this, China (7.9 million), EU
(3.5 million) and the US (1.4 million) accounted for 93% of sales. - cobalt institute market report 2023.
It's so fucking wild to me that the majority opinion is basically: "It's not gerrymandered for racist reasons. It's just gerrymandered for normal, political reasons. So that's totally cool."
Late last year, the Defense Department also issued its long-awaited “Instruction on Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response,” which established the Pentagon’s “policies, responsibilities, and procedures for mitigating and responding to civilian harm.” The document, mandated under the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act, and approved by Austin, directs the military to “acknowledge civilian harm resulting from U.S. military operations and respond to individuals and communities affected by U.S. military operations,” including “expressing condolences” and providing ex gratia payments to next of kin.
But despite $15 million allocated by Congress since 2020 to provide just such payments and despite members of Congress repeatedlycalling on the Pentagon to make amends for civilian harm, it has announced just one such payment in the years since.
Harvard's grad students are with the UAW. The tension between faculty and admin boiling over could become a much bigger thing, with the UAW also organising grad students across the country. At least at my university the bulk of the courseload falls onto the grad students outside of lectures.
I just got off foodstamps in the us. They gave us about $2.40 per meal per person if you assumed 3 meals per day. During covid and summer vacation (2 children) they gave bonus amounts most moneys as well. It was doable with a full time cook. Would have been incredibly difficult without the time to prepare most things from scratch.
the grocery store inflation from 2022-2024 has been brutal.
The maximum a single person can get in my state is $298/month. That used to be barely enough to eat on $10/day, which was already hard to make work and would still result in about a week without anything. With food prices going up, it's even worse.
If Biden and his remaining cabinet had any self awareness, they'd be utterly humiliated. Like how do you not feel even a little shame when the entire world watches you try to defend a fucking monster?
Another really sad part is that campus security just stood by and watched as the protesters were attacked by "counter protesters".
This is absolutely ridiculous. From what I can discuss, it sounds like they weren't blocking anyone's access to facilities, they were students peacefully protesting at their post secondary educational institution. This shit is happening in Canada, too!; thankfully a Quebec court just overruled one of our university's attempt to forcefully forcefully remove the protesters.
I hope the universities that called in militarized police responses get sued and administration staff is forced to resign. These chuckleclowns should never be in charge of educational institutions ever again.
