For zigbee there’s a list of what works with what integration - other than that I usually google the device I’m eyeing and see what issues ppl are having
For example tuya is an example of white label brand and other companies are buying their products in bulk and doing OEM with some shitty software on top of it and charging a premium.
I have a combination of sonoff, ikea, lidl, and a few tuya. Be careful with tuya versions, I’ve bought hardware that wasn’t compatible but looked like it was
Anything that will run ESPHome or Tasmota is a safe bet. The ESPHome website has a list of supported devices here, and there is a Tasmota devices repository on the Blakadder website similar to the Zigbee one.
I used to love the Blakadder site but now I'm mostly finding "this device will only work if you have an older version" as the newer chips roll out which don't support Tasmota.
I've been looking at OpenBeken as an alternative but the documentation and process for that one seems much more confusing to be.
I'm hoping that sometime we might see a consolation of projects so that we can get Tasmota support on e.g. CB2S etc services
The best thing I ever did with home automation and children is to setup motion sensors in the hallway and tie it to my WLED strips. If anyone in the house leaves a bedroom at night, led light strips in the hallway, along the stairs, and downstairs turn on low and red for 5 minutes. There's no turning on lights or forgetting to turn them off. It's bright enough to see but not so bright that is jarring. Also, using red light doesn't kill your night vision when you go back to a dark room.
Ah yes, the joys of automating everything to the extent that when someone does happen to be a guest in your house that you need to give them a ten minute lecture on how to turn on the lights because "it's all automated" but "you're still working on it"
I have never seen nor used a WD MyCloud, but if you know that an upgrade allowed for HA to run (I presume in Docker), then how about just wiping whatever OS is on the NAS and installing a Linix distro, then moving up from there?
A few use TrueNAS to run HA in docker, but a few quick searches shows that won't work on your hardware.
Probably a lot more work than you were intending, but should simplify the future for that NAS and prevent any kludgy workarounds from trapping you again in the future.
And... I presume you have a backup of everything on that NAS 😉
There may be a more straight forward way to do it now, but the traditional way is to add a condition to the automation based on the automation's (or maybe the light or motion detector) last_triggered property. You need, AFAIK, to use a template for this.
A condition with something like this should make it so it can't fire more than once every hour (60 seconds times 60 minutes): {{ (as_timestamp(now()) - as_timestamp(state_attr('automation.driveway','last_triggered'))) > 60 * 60 }}
You need something like a raspberry or a small computer to run home assistant 24/7 and you also need a zigbee coordinator (to be able to use your ZigBee devices) like sonoff CC2652P or conbee 3 (others are available).
Install home assistant, and learn how to manage/customise as you wish.
Home assistant is great but it's not a plug and play solution (that being said, it has already been much simplified over the years and it's not that hard to get started). Settings basics stuff isn't complicated but you will have a learning curve to be able to do more complicated stuff (depending of knowledge you already have)
I was hoping someone could tell me how to get it to run on my NAS. I know people use Docker for it, but I don't know which one or how to? I do have a Sonoff Dongle.
Thank you so much for the time and effort you're putting into helping me, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately though, that's not for the original MyCloud. My version didn't get the update to version 5 of the operating system, which is step one of the instructions you linked, hence the conundrum I'm in and subsequent plea for help. It was kind of a hail Mary, hoping for a miracle.
That's such a cool idea! I don't have kids but if I someday do I'll probably steel your idea. I feel like the digital era makes it "to much" for kids, and having a limited, physical library was a better experience overall.
The Home Assistant team publishes the analytics they collect (for those that allow it). The integrations and add-ons pages might interest you if you haven't seen them.
Google calendar is a lot more popular than I assumed. I tried putting it on once but it looked like a pita so I just didn't bother. Maybe I should give it a real go
I currently have it watching my calendar and setting my alarms on my phone.
If I am on Early shift in my calendar it sets alarm for 5am, late shift, it checks if the kids are off school and if they aren't it sets my alarm for 7.30am.
If I'm on holiday and so are my kids, no alarms are set.
