Ehrlich Bachman, this is your mom and you, you are not my baby.

ashok36 ,

There are two separate entities: the raspberry pi foundation which is the charity and unchanged, and the raspberries pi holdings company which has always been the business side of the project. The corporation contributes to the foundation a significant amount of money which is not changing. The charity is the majority stakeholder in the company.

Here's the founder explaining it

https://youtu.be/EoSPR_dZnYg?feature=shared

ashok36 ,

I'm sorry but all of these doom and gloom comments are insufferable.

A. The raspberry pis that you have known and loved are all still around and, considering inflation, cheaper than ever. If you're complaining about prices, stop buying from scalpers!

B. All this talk of enshittification and decline is purely and 100% speculative. You are acting like your catastrophic fears are a forgone conclusion when they're, at best, a guess.

ashok36 ,

Maybe. I'll be the first one to call out bad behavior but at this point it's just knee jerk anticorporate fervor.

The worst thing raspberry pi ever did is dare to be an electronic company during the worst electronics part shortage in our lifetime. People complaining they couldn't get a pi to do their dinky personal project are the epitome of having first world problems. Prices and availability have been back to normal for over a year now and people still gripe about it. I'm just over it.

ashok36 ,

Pi5 doesn't have h264 hardware. Pi4 is probably better for media centers right now.

ashok36 ,

That assumes your media collection is all hevc. That's not the case for most people.

ashok36 ,

For a standard media center, kodi is pretty great.

ashok36 ,

Yes, that's my point. If you have a library full of 1080 h264 then the pi 4 is a better choice. The Pi5 will struggle with software decoding compared to the 4.

At the end of the day, they're different boards with different use cases. I think a lot of people don't appreciate that enough.

ashok36 ,

If all you're doing is plex and a minecraft server, look into proxmox or unraid.

Unraid is paid but very noob friendly compared to most others. It's also very flexible hardware wise.

ashok36 ,

They share similarities for sure. I've not used it though. I know unraid offers a 30 day testing license. Not sure about the others.

ashok36 ,

If you don't see progress, it's because you're not paying attention. Each test flight of starship has performed better than the last.

ashok36 ,

The vote I cast in 2020 was against trump and not for Biden. I feel pretty good about that decision considering what happened afterwards. I'll vote against Trump again as many times as it takes.

ashok36 ,

People that watch the news favor Biden by 10pts. It's people that get their info from social media and YouTube that favor Trump overwhelmingly.

The algorithm promotes attention seeking behavior and Trump is the god king of attention seeking.

ashok36 ,

You misread it. It was pretty clear, but you managed it.

ashok36 ,

Not settled in court. An independent law firm investigates the allegations. No court has touched this and likely never will.

ashok36 ,

Bluetooth and USB speakerphones seem to work fairly well as both mic and speaker. I think thr sennheiser sp20 has been in a couple tinkerers posts I've seen.

ashok36 ,

You can get a decent five year old ThinkPad off ebay that will run circles around an rpi5 for most tasks. The price, after case, power supply, and storage won't be that far off either.

ashok36 ,

The older I get, the more becoming a robot tiger seems like as good a retirement plan as I'm gonna get.

ashok36 ,

Marijuana is not a gateway drug.

Having to deal with a drug dealer that wants to also sell you actually addictive drugs is the gateway.

Legalize pot, sell it at the grocery store, and you will watch the number of addicts in general fall precipitously. I guarantee it.

ashok36 ,

The question isn't whether Marijuana is habit forming. Obviously for some percentage it is. The question is whether Marijuana use in and of itself encourages or preface additional drug use. My position is that it does not and by legalizing Marijuana we would find that it is the interaction with black market drug dealers which correlates instead.

Or they make a copy of your phone, alphanumeric password and all, and just sit on it for ten years until quantum computers make solving the password a piece of cake.

You should assume that any device confiscated by authorities will be copied and broken into eventually. Treat all data on said device as if it's already compromised.

ashok36 ,

I've been getting this on the YouTube app on shield TV and fire TV stick lately. It's as you said; just click dismiss on the ad and it goes back to full screen.

ashok36 ,

Pausing just brings up a sidebar with a static image ad. Maybe they change that to audio amd/or video in the future but right now you just seem uninformed and reflexively hostile. Maybe like, experience what they're doing before judging? Or at least before commenting...

ashok36 ,

Why would you even assume? The info is in the linked article. Point being, if you'd read the article you wouldn't need to make assumptions.

YouTube started testing pause ads last year, as reported by Adweek. These ads will pop up as banners around the video and can be removed by hitting the “dismiss” button. They’re going to be pretty similar to the pause ads that Hulu introduced back in 2019.

ashok36 ,

The back pedaling has reached the "it was a joke. I was only pretending to be wrong" stage. What comes next?

Just admit you spoke without knowledge and try to do better in the future. It's not that hard.

ashok36 ,

The question is, at that price can you really afford not to?

ashok36 ,

Hopefully, home assistant will get big enough that they will be impossible to ignore. With an estimated 1 million installs currently running worldwide, they're probably not there yet. At 5m though? Probably. 10m? Definitely.

They've mostly got the hardware right now and are developing more. A more mobile friendly and noob friendly unboarding process is really all they need.

ashok36 ,

Their biggest risk right now is doing something to lose the trust of the community. Most users have zero money actually invested in home assistant, as opposed to something like Alexa and Google home. That makes it a lot easier to jump ship to an alternative. I think that's a big part of why they've started the foundation.

ashok36 ,

That's why you run a couple rounds of preclear to stress them and then run a fresh smart report.

ashok36 ,

I've done the tape thing before. It was a little bit of a pain but not that hard.

Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads (www.lowpass.cc)

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.  ...

ashok36 ,

You've added nothing of value to this conversation.

ashok36 ,

Sounds like the unemployment insurance website here in Florida. I had to use it during covid and it was one of the singularly worst experiences of my life.

Court Bans Use of 'AI-Enhanced' Video Evidence Because That's Not How AI Works (gizmodo.com)

A judge in Washington state has blocked video evidence that’s been “AI-enhanced” from being submitted in a triple murder trial. And that’s a good thing, given the fact that too many people seem to think applying an AI filter can give them access to secret visual data.

ashok36 ,

Digital zoom is just cropping and enlarging. You're not actually changing any of the data. There may be enhancement applied to the enlarged image afterwards but that's a separate process.

ashok36 ,

Make that a sample size of two. I wanted a tesla as soon as my current car gives out but I won't go anywhere near them now because of Musk. I know there's no ethical consumption under capitalism but giving money to Musk is a bridge too far for me.

I still hope SpaceX succeeds despite him though.

ashok36 ,

All previous animal test subjects died, including the majority that were euthanized at the end of the test period for dissection and study. There was a super high failure rate but let's not misrepresent what actually happened.

ashok36 ,

Look into ratgdo if your willing to DIY. Konnected is just about to release a version of the same. More costly but konnected actually has customer service.

ashok36 ,

I'm using a bunch of wyze cam 3 cameras with the wzmini custom firmware installed and outside connections turned off. They took a while to figure out how to set up since I'd never had to deal with ssh keys before but after set up they are pretty bulletproof.

ashok36 , (edited )

Don Jr and Eric have no rizz. If big D dies, they'll treat him like Elvis. They'll keep buying the merch but no one bought any Lisa Marie albums.

ashok36 ,

What a weird thing to get hung up on.

ashok36 ,

How did they abandon the affordable market? You can get a 1GB pi 4 for $35 today, the same price as when it launched. You get get a zero 2 for $15 I think. Just because the pi 5 is more expensive doesn't mean they've abandoned the affordable market. They just widened the product line. Jeez.

ashok36 ,

You can buy a Pi zero 2 W for $15. A pi 3 model A will cost you $25. The pi 3 model B+ and pi 4 model B are both $35. The prices haven't gone up. Your expectations have gone up and the price of similar x86 hardware has come down.

You can argue that the value of the pi lineup has diminished, and that's a valid argument, but these price complaints are just silly.

ashok36 ,

Complaining about scalper prices is fine as long as you lay the blame at the right foot. The ones to blame for those prices are the scalpers and the people who buy from them.

I was trying to think how Plex thinks this is going to play out, knowing that this move will piss off their customer base. Then I realized, this isn't a play for Plex's existing customer base. This is a play for their customer's "friends and family" that are enjoying shared libraries already.

Their 'customer' base has for many many years been developing a large user base of technologically naive people with Plex apps installed who could never run their own server. If Plex knows, for example, that for every paying customer there's three other users pulling from someone's library, that's a huge opportunity for them to convert those users to paying customers.

Everyone that set up a Plex server and then shared it with your tech-phobic parents, cousins, friends, etc... We made this possible.

I don't like it but I can't argue with the logic from Plex here.

-edit- Tightened up the grammar.

ashok36 ,

I wouldn't be so sure if that. It's possible, yeah, but if my theory is right they see the library sharing as the carrot to get normies to download the plex app onto their roku or apple TV.

Pivoting to a streaming only app would close off that avenue for user acquisition permanently.

ashok36 ,

Indeed. If op fills the bath to the overflow and then gets in, guess what. It's gonna overflow.

Also, just take a shower for peets sake.

ashok36 ,

Fuck this bible thumpin reactionary hillbilly dork.

"But he goes after both sides!"

No, He punches down on poor people. Fuck off with that.

Workers at companies that tested out a 4-day workweek are happier and more efficient — and firms made more money. One lawmaker says it's 'here to stay.' (news.yahoo.com)

Workers at companies that tested out a 4-day workweek are happier and more efficient — and firms made more money. One lawmaker says it's 'here to stay.'::The latest data shows that workers and companies prosper under a four-day workweek. Rep. Mark Takano wants to make it law.

ashok36 ,

The problem is separating out the work that does rely on hours worked vs ones that don't.

Running a stamping machine? Yeah, your run time is going to be pretty much proportional to your output.

Working a desk job doing research and generating reports? The better you are at it, the more you can do, and eventually you just outrun the workload. Then you shit twiddling your thumbs for no reason.
