Just dont look at Ubisoft. 💀

Ad/promotion appeared in offline games whenever you opened the map...

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Yeah sadly, whenever you say PC / Laptop people associate it with windows. You buy one of these, its windows. People dont even know what else is out there.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

However, if they say 'okay guys, we heard you, one more year of support!'. This way they could farm so much PR points its insane.

Cant guess which one they will choose tbh.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Yeah, the start menu ads were / are 'only' in the beta build.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Yeah kind of, but the CEO needs to learn that not everyone will like their products, you cant convince everyone.

The person said that they dont want to engage with the discussion, then the CEO should have just let it be.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

So, this means Proton is not private either? Any product you pay for cannot be private?

There is a difference between anonimity and privacy.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Holdup, what did the tumblr CEO do? Havent heard about that, im curious.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

I actually dont understand why news and such written blogs stopped with sponsors. I dont want tracking pixels, autoplaying videos and all that bullshit. Have a static small paragraph with a referral link, thats it.

For example on adventofcode, there was a static ad for spotify job application. This is an ad which i can advocate for. Creator of the site gets money, the ad is not intrusive, and it targets programmers who would just naturally navigate to this site.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Yeah, like people say 'I already use windows/google search/whatever, so it does not matter if i switch email provider/ whatever'.

What?? I so hate this mentality: 'If you cant eliminate / change it fully, then why bother?' Bruh, small steps can go such a long way man...

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Yeah same. I still use youtube for example, but not gmail, google search or windows. These three are huge, in gathering info.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Yeah, but until then we can support these projects. Even a one-time 10€ donation can go a huge distance, or monthly 1€ even. These add up.

P.S. To any open source devs, please allow us to donate yearly recurring 10-15€! There are so many projects to support, but i have to live from something as well.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

If its a laptop, then it has a built-in UPS as well. Plus extra peripherals are not needed either!

AVengefulAxolotl ,

But imagine, if you could just press win+number and then go to the exact workspace you want! Which KDE Plasma allows you to do.

I seriously cant get used to using win+ctrl+arrows. If i could change this, and with powertoys windows would not be that bad.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Stop it! You make android look good, oh no!

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Yeah, this extension is crazy good. It works as if it was native.

Music Piracy Is Back, Baby (gizmodo.com)

"Muso, a research firm that studies piracy, concluded that the high prices of streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music are pushing people back towards illegal downloads. Spotify raised its prices by one dollar last year to $10.99 a month, the same price as Apple Music. Instead of coughing up $132 a year, more consumers...

AVengefulAxolotl ,

I still use spotify as well. It works for me, i just found like 10 new songs last week. At the same time, last year i listened 2hrs/day on average.

BUT at the same time, every few months i export my whole playlists, just in case, using this site.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

2 years left still. Hopefully by that time Linux gains enough popularity that developers consider supporting it. At the very least Ubuntu.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Absolutely agree with the youtube subscription part. I am not giving them money if i can.

So what do I do? Patreon. I watch ad free, and i give 1 dollar a month instead on patreon. Win-win.

P.S. However, this way only a select few get money from me, but it is what it is.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

You know, RSS exists to literally circumvent this problem, albeit for articles. A lot of sites still have it, people just forgot that this is a thing. Little bit of a chore to setup, but its actually pretty nice. Obviously finding these sites is the hard part, but a good search engine (kagi btw) could make it work.

Also PeerTube exists as well, which reduces the cost of hosting videos.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Wow, are you me?? :D

I almost did the same, just my phone is not a pixel, so i had to resort to some other custom ROM. And I still just use good ol' firefox with proton VPN most of the time.

P.S. I also blocked our TV from accessing the internet as well. Ex. Codeberg is a GitHub replacement, and on mobile Grayjay/LibreTube works great for youtube.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

If you need a UI to have albums and share them then yes, the previously mentioned Immich. I host it as well, and it is truly awesome.

One caveat though: it is still pretty early in development, there might be breaking changes. For example a few weeks ago you needed to update the docker compose file because they changed dependencies.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

You know, it is literally pick your poison, google/alphabet is not a better company either.

Kagi search has improved their ultimate plan

So I've been using Kagi for a while now as a paid search engine. I always thought it's $25 a month plan was a little steep for search, but a) I got work to pay for it, and b) startpage nee google was getting less and less useful, and bing and whatever used it has... well been worse for me always....

AVengefulAxolotl ,

You can generate a link, which has a token in the url, so you can search while in incognito (or even another browser.)

And to be fair, i pay $10 now because i hope one day it will only cost 5. It does not seem far fetched because they did just lower prices like a week ago. (Unlimited search was 25, now it costs 10)
