What’s an Amiibo, anyway? It’s like a Webkinz, right?

BmeBenji ,

I get the meme and all, but assuming Mario is representative of a cis man, isn’t this reinforcing a really bad stereotype; men who never fully mature find a partner who will act as their mom?

BmeBenji ,

Oh, yeah that’s fair

BmeBenji ,

Was she? I could swear in the books she was described as not conventionally beautiful

BmeBenji ,

I think this belongs in c/antiquememeroadshow or c/forwardsfromgrandma

BmeBenji ,

Wow I never even thought to ask - does SteamVR work on Linux? Like the Valve Index in particular? I’ve been meaning to switch but Windows’ HDR support has been holding me back. If there isn’t a good distro for VR that could be another factor

BmeBenji ,

Guess I’ll add Nvidia drivers to the list of things holding me back lol

Maybe I’ll dual boot and keep all my HDR, Anti-cheat-riddled, and VR games on Windows and put everything else on Linux

BmeBenji ,

I voted for Gary Johnson because Hillary sounded awful in 2016 and I 1000x regret it. Fuck this system for making me choose between bad and worse, but yes obviously I have to choose bad over worse.

BmeBenji ,

I appreciate the sentiment but I think my regret is more tied to the fact that I very much fell for the white supremacist men’s rights activism and homophobic rhetoric of the time, and me voting for Gary Johnson over Hillary feels like a symptom of that fact as well, and I deeply regret falling for that bullshit.

My life has definitely gotten better since I started doing this. Local restaurants are almost universally better anyways

BmeBenji ,

Despite the privacy concerns, Microsoft says that the Recall index remains local and private on-device, encrypted in a way that is linked to a particular user's account.

Just like how Microsoft domain-bound emails were stored locally on machines running Outlook, right? Or how purchasing and downloading music, movies, and video games meant that we owned them, right?

I don’t believe for a fucking second that this “feature” will remain locally encrypted forever. Fuck Microsoft, fuck the AI bubble.

“Don’t be evil!

wait, you say you’ll pay me to be evil? Well fuck that changes everything!”

This image never fails to make me laugh, like legitimately laugh out loud with my full belly

BmeBenji ,

Look, I love the idea of Linux but unless you have your head in the sand it’s obvious that Linux takes a good deal of technoliteracy to use.

BmeBenji ,

Slightly off-topic but I really enjoyed the way Horizon Zero Dawn (spoilers ahead) illustrated the military industrial complex with Ted Faro. The dude was so convinced he was right about everything that not only did he help create the deadliest legion of machines ever conceived, he also deleted all knowledge acquired by humanity because he fucked up so bad that he thought anyone less smart than him (read:everyone else) would fuck up just as bad if not worse with the same knowledge. I imagine most real military contractors are lead by people who are similarly humble

BmeBenji ,

Oh I’m still going through Forbidden West. When I read the first part of your comment I thought you were spoiling it for me lol

BmeBenji ,

Pretty sure you just described like every sports team with a fanbase. The Football Team of Theseus.

49ers fans love to brag that the 49ers are among the teams with the most Super Bowl wins, but they haven’t gotten one in like 3 generations of players so you tell me, 49ers of Theseus. Do you have any Super Bowl wins?

BmeBenji ,

With friends like these, who needs brick walls?

BmeBenji ,

“Do you have anything gluten free?”

I had a lot of conversations with my dad about how glorifying people is setting yourself up for failure when there were loads of protests were going on about bringing down statues of famously racist people who did like a handful of notable things i.e. most of the U.S. founding fathers.

I wouldn’t suggest keeping a list of names that you admire. Maybe keep a list of things about those names that you admire

BmeBenji ,

Following rules because you’re afraid of the consequences is extremely different from falling in love with or even desiring the rules.

BmeBenji ,

I memorized the formula for the strength of universal gravitation thanks to Weird Al’s song “Pancreas” which made my physics exams a lot easier

That is the purpose of the pancreas

BmeBenji OP ,

I believe it. I had a professor in college who said if he found a genie he would wish for 3 different sets of truly random data lol

BmeBenji OP ,

Okay, Schrodinger

BmeBenji ,

Came here to say this. Those motherfuckers take down cats, dogs, AND wolves

BmeBenji ,

If you haven’t heard Gojira’s song about the idea of Oroborus, spend the next 5 minutes doing yourself a favor

When I first saw HDR on an OLED monitor, it wasn’t everything I thought people were making it out to be but over time it really grew on me. DOOM Eternal, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Cyberpunk 2077 have so much color, and the way the light pops makes it all just pure eye candy.

BmeBenji ,

I haven’t played Tears of the Kingdom but that construction mechanic seems like the coolest and most engaging implementation of “crafting” ever.

Ah yes, the notoriously most expensive of all the vegetables: the potato.

US sues Apple for illegal monopoly over smartphones (www.theverge.com)

The US Department of Justice and 16 state and district attorneys general accused Apple of operating an illegal monopoly in the smartphone market in a new antitrust lawsuit. The DOJ and states are accusing Apple of driving up prices for consumers and developers at the expense of making users more reliant on its iPhones.

BmeBenji ,

Objectively superior? Superior user experience is entirely subjective, but that is the main selling point of almost everything Apple has done in the last 17 years

BmeBenji ,

The crux of this suit seems to be that the DOJ believes that Apple needs to make its hardware fair to everyone that can develop on it, and make its software fair to all possible hardware that can run it, which is particularly interesting because Apple’s main product seems to be a pleasant and easy user experience that cuts through the physical barriers of the pieces of hardware it sells. And part of that user experience is the sense of security that is supposed to come with knowing that Apple is (more or less) able to decide who is allowed to access important, secure elements of their hardware.

On the software side of things, I don’t fully understand why or how the DOJ could force Apple to develop better integration support for cross-vendor hardware usage? Why do they need to go the extra mile to make an Apple Watch work well with an Android phone? Because the DOJ says so? I mean, sure I guess that would be better for everyone but it’s a weird thing to require.

BmeBenji ,

I think you’re just proving that it is entirely subjective. If it was objectively an inferior experience, I’m confident they wouldn’t be nearly as popular as they are. I get that there are plenty of people who believe firmly that total control over their own electronics is the best experience, and I can understand that. I enjoy tinkering in a Linux machine as much as any Lemmy user. However the vast majority of people do not want to be overwhelmed with the amount of ways they can configure their devices to the point that they can’t discern one choice from another. And my iPhone does exactly what I need it to just as much as my Android did.

Yeah, marketing is definitely part of it. They make their devices sound, look, and appear like they’re some sort of luxury experience. But there’s definitely something extremely smooth about the way Apple’s suite of software works with their hardware, and how their hardware works with each other, and I appreciate that for what it is.

BmeBenji ,

I just wish we could get some heavy met-Al

Apex Legends streamers surprised to find aimbot and other hacks added to their PCs in the middle of major competition via anti-cheat software (www.pcgamer.com)

Wow it finally happened. So glad I switched to steam running on linux mint last week. I refused to install helldivers because it wanted to install some no holds barred god level permissions anti-cheat software. Windows 11 was the last straw for me. Good times.....

BmeBenji ,

I imagine their surprise came across kind of like this

“what is this? I bought a xbox card! what is this? i don’t even know what that is!”

BmeBenji ,

I once played the drinking game Paranoia with a group of people where everyone was asking things like “who’s the horniest here” or “who drinks the most on a weekly basis” and “whose probably the worst at their job” and everyone was joking around, laughing and having a good time. When it was my turn to come up with a whispered prompt, I asked “who here drinks glasses of milk regularly” and the guy whose name was said was clearly more concerned about this than any of the other things that had been said that night. He had to know and understand what about him gave off the aura of “milk-drinker” and I’ll never forget how that label was the most upsetting thing that was said that night.

Do you understand that in the primary there is no contest between Trump and Biden? Biden’s going to get the Democratic nomination anyway, so voting uncommitted in the primary has no negative consequences in the actual election that happens in November?

    BmeBenji ,

What mentality? The one I’m describing is the “Biden sucks but Trump is way worse” mentality. I don’t see how that results in Trump being elected

    BmeBenji ,

People voted uncommitted in an effort to tell Biden that he needed to improve his policies, not to say that they’re gonna not vote. If they weren’t gonna vote, they wouldn’t have voted.
