Can't wait to graduate so I don't have to run Respondus and keep dealing with this crap.

Install it on ReactOS, lol.

BreakDecks ,

Not exactly inspiring any confidence trying to pass that AI-generated monstrosity as a photo of the device.

BreakDecks ,

This one of those questions I am overwhelmingly eqipped to answer, but only with the weird proprietary knowledge about software defined networking and microsegmentation that my job has endowed me with...

So I'll resist the urge to give you that overcomplicated answer and just say get a firewall like others have suggested.

BreakDecks ,

Oh man, uh, here's a primer: https://mkomu.kapsi.fi/hipl/index.php?index=how

I am most familar with HIP, but there are ways to isolate hosts so that they can only talk to what you want them to talk to in a distinctly different way than a firewall. You could have three hosts (A, B, & C) on the same subnet where A can talk to B & C, but B & C cannot talk to each other. Likewise, A and C could have access to an Internet gateway, while B does not.

So far HIP is the only protocol I have seen for microsegmentation that actually works in an intuitive way, but I suspect Wireguard could be used to the same effect with some creative engineering.

BreakDecks ,
BreakDecks ,

Not if HIP is a part of your network stack (adding a waist). Unfortunately this is not a plug-and-play solution unless you have the budget for my employer's product, which is not priced for consumers.

BreakDecks ,

Don't exclude Pixel phones so quickly. They are one of the most versatile for custom ROMs, and they check all of your checkboxes. I love my CalxyOS Pixel 6.

Fewer people are using Elon Musk’s X as the platform struggles to attract and keep users, according to analysts (www.nbcnews.com)

Data from two research firms and figures published by Musk and X suggest a deteriorating situation for X by some metrics. Musk has marketed it as the world’s “town square,” but in number of users it continues to lag far behind social media rivals that focus on video, such as Instagram and TikTok. ...

BreakDecks ,

It's almost like "fewer people" is a distinctly different concept from "nobody".

BreakDecks ,
  1. The post you responded to didn't say that Twitter is "dead".
  2. People who still use Twitter are, in fact, idiots.
  3. NBC News does seem to be a more credible source than you on this topic.
BreakDecks ,

So if you turn that setting off, I assume your timeline is completely overtaken by alt-right propaganda and boomer memes. This is Facebook (er... Meta) after all.

BreakDecks ,

"Money can't buy happiness" is a great mantra for rejecting the capitalist enshirining of wealth as a virtue. It's important to see happiness as something more complex than income.

The issue is that when interpreted as "poverty is no excuse for unhappiness", it loses all valid meaning.

Because lots of people use Mullvad and think it's neat that there's a Mullvad train. This isn't a sponsored post, people just like Mullvad.

BreakDecks ,

I'm all for this as long as we get custom novelty engine sounds. I would drive a Ferrari that makes cheesy engine sounds like a person impersonating a car with their voice. Floor the accellerator and it literally screams "Vroooom!". Coast around a parking lot while your car gently scats.

Imagine starting your car and it making the Macintosh boot sound, then tearing down the interstate with dialup modem sounds blasting.

/s (I don't even own a car)

BreakDecks ,

This came from the KDE theme store. Most Plasma users trust KDE.

BreakDecks ,

No system is perfect, sure, but rolling their own silicon was sorta asking for this problem.

BreakDecks ,

You don't have to walk away, you can migrate. This is more an issue of building your house on the king's land. The mods that stayed should serve as a warning to the rest of us that building a Reddit community means that Reddit owns the community you created, and that as a moderator Reddit owns you.

BreakDecks ,

I know you're just being funny, but the idea is that Spez's shares and resulting influence over a publicly traded Reddit will incentivize investors to buy stock, raising the value of the stock for all shareholders. The problem with this idea is that Spez is an idiot who is actively sabotaging Reddit's long term viability.

If you have €50,000 worth of Monero, they can't know and won't care. If you transfer it to someone else you'll be under the radar. If you try to cash out your Monero, they'll find out and you're in deep shit. Monero is worthless to most people if you you can't exchange for fiat.

BreakDecks ,

What exactly are you referring to here?

BreakDecks ,

Justice isn't a zero sum game. More than one person can contribute to the same crime.

BreakDecks ,

This thread is about a mass shooter from New York. Are you lost?

BreakDecks ,

You can already download the entirity of Wikipedia. If it ever fell, the content could easily be restored elsewhere.

Also, I don't think I understand why this should be federated.

BreakDecks ,

While I agree that AI generated content is annoying and of poor quality, those are hardly reasons to disallow the creation of AI generated content. If we want to expand IP protections to protect against AI plagerism, we need to draw a better line than just calling it garbage.

BreakDecks ,

That was the entire context of your response. Did you read the comment you were replying to?

BreakDecks ,

Mickey Mouse is public domain...

BreakDecks ,

You really came back a day later and left a second angsty reply because I didn't reply to your first one? lmao

BreakDecks ,

I know people tire of the "just use Linux" suggestion, but c'mon man...

You're using a 15 year old OS that reached EoL over 4 years ago because the company that made it completely enshittified the next 3 major releases of the OS (and counting). You know Microsoft isn't going to reverse course and make a good OS again. You're just creating an even worse problem for yourself by running outdated, insecure code while the rest of the world moves forward.

Installing and learning how to use Linux is arguably the saner option, but if that's not something you're willing to face, at least plan on buying a Mac as your next computer instead of permanently committing yourself to deprecated software, or forcing yourself to accept enshittification because that's the only upgrade path you're familar with...

BreakDecks ,

And the cycle of infantalizing women continues...

BreakDecks ,

You mean like how US ISPs wiretapped the Internet for the NSA? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PRISM

But really, how dare anyone but us do that.

BreakDecks ,

So we're censoring political speech?

BreakDecks ,

I've read this comment over 10 times now and I have no idea what the words "the law 50/50 signed here" means, so I can't be sure I understand the argument you are trying to make. My best guess is that you are using circular logic to suggest that every democratically decided upon decision is always the right decision, which is nonsense because democracy is demonstrably fallible.

BreakDecks ,

Encouraging people to contact their representatives and demand action? Congress clearly can't have this. How will they do their jobs if they are constantly forced to engage with their constituents?

BreakDecks ,

teenagers and old people are the sorts of folks that need to be protected from themselves

Please, big daddy government, protect me from the freedom of choice. I cannot be trusted to consume without your permission.

BreakDecks ,

How many of us stood up for net neutrality at the behest of Reddit?

BreakDecks ,

This guy was defending rape earlier today. He really hates women it appears.

BreakDecks ,

Why non-copyrighted? I want to flood Reddit with copyrighted text from the most aggressively litigious rightsholders available. 🍿

BreakDecks ,

It's funny working at a company that doesn't allow Linux on a workstation, but is also actively developing and deploying tons of Linux-based products...

I think the real reason is that their MDM cant lock down a Linux machine the way it locks down a Windows or Mac machine...

BreakDecks ,

"Windows Reserved Bandwidth" is just a QoS Packet Scheduler. The Linux Kernel has this too. Equally difficult to disable on any system, because its assumed you will want to be able to download a file and surf the web at the same time. You can turn it off I guess, if quality of service isn't your vibe.

BreakDecks ,

If it's on the head it's a bow.

if it's on the neck it's a bow tie.

BreakDecks ,

Google Fi is a 5G virtual network that primarily uses T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular towers. The "Fi" in "Google Fi" is not a reference to WiFi. Americans just like sticking "Fi" on anything that uses wireless data.

BreakDecks ,

I wanted to add that while Zoneminder isn't going to be as easy or feature-rich as some of the commercial solutions recommended in this thread, this is the only solution that you can trust will remain privacy-respecting. GPL software isn't going to sell you out.

All that can be said about the rest is that they haven't sold their customers out yet.

BreakDecks ,

If I own the bridge, nobody but me is accessing the message.

Copilot misses the question, elaborates on topic I was speaking aloud instead. (lemmy.world)

Was using my SO's laptop, I had been talking (not searching, or otherwise typing) about some VPN solutions for my homelab, and had the curiosity to use the new big copilot button and ask what it can do. The beginning of this context was actually me asking if it can turn off my computer for me (it cannot) and I ask this....

BreakDecks ,

I guess that's why OP brought up that they were using someone else's computer.

Also, a truly privacy-minded person wouldn't refuse to use a hosted AI product at all. We generally just make ourselves aware that we don't have privacy when using it, and never type anything sensitive into it. Also, have you seen what it costs to run a capable LLM?

BreakDecks ,

That's not a great metric. Plenty of devices connect to the Internet without sacrificing user privacy or freedom. It's not connectivity that ruins the product, it's where on the Internet that product connects, and if you are allowed to have control over how the product works.

We need to have better literacy about proprietary software, walled gardens, automatic updates, and the consequences to the user experience if you become dependent on these kinds of products.

But I don't have much faith. Microsoft puts ads on the start menu and inside of Solitaire, and Windows remains solidly the most popular OS. People overwhelmingly let enshittification happen without serious resistance.

BreakDecks ,

My favorite part about using an old laptop as a 24/7/365 plugged-in server is the anticipation of when the lithium battery will explode from overcharging.

BreakDecks ,

Theoretically? RCS is not an open standard. It requires a license from GSMA.
