When I receive things like this, I make sure to open Gmail from within Firefox with all extensions meant to defend me (like NoScript, unlock origin, privacy badger, https everywhere) and then I hover over the gigantic button "check my activity" and see if it leads to a accounts.google.com link.

Either way, I then copy the link address without clicking on it, and open it in a private window to see what happens. If it's a scam, the page it opens has a legit looking, but wrong google address (aka, it cannot really end with google.com). Then I just stop having fun and don't continue nor type anything

What does it look like in your case?

ConstipatedWatson ,

"TurboTax must die"

That would be the perfect title of a multi billion dollar franchise about rebels from the IRS tryijg to thwart known scammers from Intuit.

Google Search is getting even worse for independent sites (www.theverge.com)

In February, HouseFresh managing editor Gisele Navarro called out publishers like BuzzFeed and Rolling Stone as some of the culprits that publish content about air purifiers despite a lack of expertise — but Google rewards these sites with high rankings all the same. The result is a search results page filled with SEO-first...

Silence!

Don't tell the holy secret to the world!

ConstipatedWatson ,

Guys, I'm embarrassed but I got to ask: can someone explain how it should be understood?

No, I'm not making fun of it. I legitimately don't understand it and I would like to.

From the other comments I get it's something about video calls at home and maybe people yelling while on them? I'm confused because the guy walking on the horse is also relevant (perhaps in minding his business and being disturbed by others yelling)?

ConstipatedWatson ,

Ooooh, now it makes sense! Thanks!!! I've been that guy several times, getting lost in my thoughts, so I see why everyone could relate to this strip!

ConstipatedWatson ,

I was very excited to get an invite shortly after it's opened and I still have all the emails that tell me my friend XYZ accepted my invitation to Gmail.

It was a time when getting a Gmail invitation wasn't trivial.

Here's a video recalling how exciting it was to have a Gmail.

Nowadays it's different and possibly less good, but searching in Gmail is still very easy, which is awesome

ConstipatedWatson ,

When I look for things on Gmail on my laptop, I get detailed and complete results, when I do the same on the Gmail app, it seems like I get all results up to maybe two years ago (and it doesn't show the rest). This second thing is really annoying, but at least on the computer version I always get everything

ConstipatedWatson ,

I dislike the fact that "ads" can also include crapware being injected into my computer (viruses, tracking cookies, mysterious scripts, etc).

ConstipatedWatson ,

It's currently late and I am on my phone, so I can't research this too well, but for example this thread and official Microsoft link discusses th Adrozek malware which injects you with unwanted ads and information directly from your browser.

Sure, it's not a virus in the older sense of the term where someone either burns your drive or takes over your computer and locks you out asking for a ransom, but it's still piloting you unsuspectingly and you don't want it.

ConstipatedWatson ,

Wait, are universities still using Respondus?

I feel for you. It was used a lot during the beginning of the pandemic, but I thought it was dropped by now.

ConstipatedWatson ,

Interesting (and annoying). I imagined that most exams went back to the usual pen and paper or laboratory, but there were tests written on laptops and in class long before the pandemic. I had forgotten about those!

ConstipatedWatson ,

Ah, wow. So some exams are happening online, even though classes are in person! There goes a combination I had not thought about. It is annoying to still need Respondus though, even if I understand why

ConstipatedWatson ,

That's why we need repositories like the arXiv, the medRxiv and Sci-Hub (aaahr, my pirates!)

ConstipatedWatson ,

You're right about Sci-Hub because of their Indian lawsuit which is very important to them, but I didn't know that Anna's Archive was a repository of scientific journals. Is it? I know Library Genesis (or LibGen) has a lot of scientific textbooks, but I didn't know it had papers. Does it?

Anyhow, Anna's Archive and LibGen are super awesome too!

Goddamn it, that's the story of my life post smartphones...

EU Commission fines Apple over €1.8 billion over abusive App store rules for music streaming providers (ec.europa.eu)

The European Commission has fined Apple over €1.8 billion for abusing its dominant position on the market for the distribution of music streaming apps to iPhone and iPad users (‘iOS users') through its App Store. In particular, the Commission found that Apple applied restrictions on app developers preventing them from...

A person once told me that in life you need to learn to be lucky. When I asked him how to learn that he replied that you need to want to be lucky. And that's it.

He was very serious and, to some extent, I think he wasn't saying something crazy (and in fact he's been very successful in his life, without resorting to help from others).

I think he meant we make our own luck: we work as hard as possible to create several occasions and maybe we screw lots of them but, if we try, try again, we can seize some of them.

I suppose the message really was: you need to be persistent. If you're so dedicated, you end up grabbing some opportunities you didn't even know existed (but you kind of created)

Thanks for coming to my TED talk... Be lucky!

ConstipatedWatson ,

That's an interesting (though different) take of how people can convince you to be lucky!

Wow, this book actually claims thinking can change reality to make it how you'd like it...

ConstipatedWatson ,

Sorry, I don't work in economics so I don't follow this (but it looks like a great analysis for someone who doesn't understand it!).

Do all these things mean Reddit IPO is likely to tank (though one never knows)?

I'd like Spez to pay for all he's done to 3rd party apps and driving mods (and us users) away, but in the end I'm afraid it's only going to be regular employees to feel the pinch and Spez just cashing out...

Also, Reddit has a ton of users and some other article these days said they're going to sell everything to AI services that are going to train themselves on Reddit for a lot of dollars. Would this be enough to keep them afloat?

I don't know what we're yelling about!!! (cit.)

    ConstipatedWatson ,

This comic explains the true ultimate goal of getting a PhD: being able to utter complete gibberish in a professional way as if it were serious stuff!

    ConstipatedWatson ,

The greatest hacker of all time.

    Just follow him

    ConstipatedWatson ,

I wish salaries everywhere went up with inflation and so we wouldn't have to feel the pinch...

    I know, I'm saying trivialities...

    ConstipatedWatson ,

    Long live Lemmy!

    ConstipatedWatson ,

Unfortunately, when we sign up to their EULAs we "willingly" give everything up... So technically it ends up being legally theirs 🥺

    ConstipatedWatson ,

    Good guy EMS!

I can't open the Mastodon link yet (not sure why) so I can't yet understand why this would be. Still, awesome if confirmed!

    ConstipatedWatson ,

    Thanks!!!

    I'm Ron Burgundy?

    How Quora Died (slate.com)

“Why Do So Many Music Venues Use Ticketmaster?” “What’s It Like to Train to Be a Sushi Chef?” “How Do Martial Artists Break Concrete Blocks?” If you were looking for answers to such questions 10 years ago, your best resource for finding a thorough, expert-informed response likely would have been one of the most...

    ConstipatedWatson ,

Here's hoping at some point search engines will return Lemmy links when people look for answers, but we're not there yet

    ConstipatedWatson ,

I tried using it three days ago and had to resort to the Wayback Machine instead. Thanks Google!

    ConstipatedWatson ,

Well, I'm sure you can buy delicious fried chicken elsewhere at a local joint (those people won't block your ads)!

    ConstipatedWatson ,

I've had the pleasure (?) To eat KFC in the US and in Europe. Besides the fact that it was junk food either way, the European version was just so much better.

I can believe that in its distant origins, KFC was actually tasty, but right now I'd sooner enjoy being punched in the stomach than eating there (a similar statement is true by replacing KFC with McDonald's or Burger King or several other fast food chains, though for only these three I've tried both US and EU versions of these products)
