gorhill already strongly suggests to use Firefox, but to drop Google Chrome altogether would leave millions of people stranded.

You should be surprised, that is unfair competition.

If you own a router from ASUS and find OpenWRT too difficult:

install Asuswrt-Merlin

On ASUS routers, the best choices are OpenWRT or Asuswrt-Merlin.

Merlin's privacy disclosure:

The only outbound connection made with me by this firmware is when the firmware checks for availability of a new version.

That thread is about the official firmware as distributed by ASUS.

The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

It is a little scary. Machine learning / LLMs consumes insane amounts of power, and it's under everyone's eyes.

I was shocked a few months ago to learn that the Internet, including infrastructure and end-user devices, already consumed 30% of world energy production in 2018. We are not only digging our grave, but doing it ever faster.

kilgore_trout ,
@kilgore_trout@feddit.it avatar

I already look into it, I choose to be vegetarian.

Nuclear power plants are a patch to the bigger issue, the idea of infinite progress. We need to reduce consumption.

I don't doubt it. With SEPA you can transfer hassle-free to 36 countries and with low / no fees.

Sure, even though Slack itself admits so in their privacy policy.

Have you tried Signal recently? On Android it's very well polished.

In fact I believe it's a shame that not more people use such a beautiful app, regardless of privacy and security implications.

HERE WeGo has traffic data but of course, as in Google Maps, it sources from other users of the same app.

If not many people use HERE, then the data is also not reliable.

the data is out there

Where? GMaps sources this data from each of its users.

A German state is ditching Windows and Microsoft Office for Linux and LibreOffice on the 30,000 PCs it uses for local government functions (www.theregister.com)

Indeed. I wish your comment was the most visible here.

Signal and Threema can be all about privacy, but they are still companies which can make money only by keeping their service as centralized as possible.

Decentralised messaging like Matrix, XMPP, Jami, have no issue with interoperability.

Chat Control May Finally Be Dead: European Court Rules That Weakening Encryption Is Illegal (tuta.com)

I use Jami daily. The pro is that it is completely decentralised: it doesn't need a server to run, all communications are over DHT. The cons is that not all messages are delivered instantly, and both sender and recipient need to be online at the same time.

kilgore_trout ,
@kilgore_trout@feddit.it avatar

I am not expecting security from it, just complete decentralisation.
