Allowing a country's political party to position their industry in a monopolistic way is a bad idea. When one group controls an industry they much more easily exploit their consumers. Encouraging folks to buy ev's in general is different from undercutting prices to create a dominant position in the market that can be exploited once you have no meaningful competitors

That being said, we all know thats not why they're doing it, they're doing it to protect the interests of US auto makers, which also sucks

After announcing increased prices, Spotify to Pay Songwriters About $150 Million Less Next Year (www.billboard.com)

When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...

I think it takes a while for that kind of competitor to emerge and gain enough traction to become a genuine alternative option. The primary option everyone long since adopted kinda has to suck for a while :/

I don't think something like duckduckgo is gonna be the eventual contender to take on google. I think it'll have to be an engine with its own index or some kind of lateral solution.

Something like brave, kagi, qwant, or stract could maybe turn into something exciting with more momentum, but honestly I have a hard time seeing them be the kind of scrappy competitor with a new approach that unseats the old king who has lost their way in pursuit of more profit at the expense of product quality. None of them seem like they truly have a new approach, but only time will tell how that story plays out this time.

    Not the person you replied to- you could consider adding a correction or [sic] or something while still including the original headline unedited

    If I'm not mistaken there's a more long winded watered down version at the end of a bunch of bs now. I may be misremembering or out of the loop on subsequent updates and changes though

    Its a bummer, I used to consider myself a fan of Google's direction. But lesson learned I suppose, money is power and power corrupts.

    Instagram Advertises Nonconsensual AI Nude Apps (www.404media.co)

    Instagram is profiting from several ads that invite people to create nonconsensual nude images with AI image generation apps, once again showing that some of the most harmful applications of AI tools are not hidden on the dark corners of the internet, but are actively promoted to users by social media companies unable or...

    I think it's clear you have never experienced being sexualized when you weren't okay with it. It's a pretty upsetting experience that can feel pretty violating. And as most guys rarely if ever experience being sexualized, never mind when they don't want to be, I'm not surprised people might be unable to emphasize

    Having experienced being sexualized when I wasn't comfortable with it, this kind of thing makes me kinda sick to be honest. People are used to having a reasonable expectation that posting safe for work pictures online isn't inviting being sexualized. And that it would almost never be turned into pornographic material featuring their likeness, whether it was previously possible with Photoshop or not.

    It's not surprising people would find the loss of that reasonable assumption discomforting given how uncomfortable it is to be sexualized when you don't want to be. How uncomfortable a thought it is that you can just be going about your life and minding your own business, and it will now be convenient and easy to produce realistic porn featuring your likeness, at will, with no need for uncommon skills not everyone has

    Cris_Color ,
    @Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

    Fair enough, I'm sorry for making assumptions about you.

    I do think my points stand though

    Honestly my experience with pop OS hasn't been great, which is a shame cause I'm rooting for the folks at system76

    Though I also think it might be kinda hard to compare performance in that way with respect to the idea of the post, since you often use different applications for the sorts of resource intensive tasks where you see performance impacts, or the cross platform software available may be better optimized for windows. Which is absolutely relevant, it makes no difference to the user, but I think the post is meant to suggest that windows 11 just leaves a ton of performance on the table relative to what windows 11 could be like if it was better made

    This is mostly just me thinking out loud into the void, I don't intend to argue with you, I just like talking to folks and sharing my thoughts

    Hope you are well :)

    I had the same problem using droid-ify until I uninstalled openboard for some reason. (Technically I uninstalled the fork that has since turned into helibord, but it was called open board also before they renamed it for f-droid release, so it still showed up as open board in droid-ify, just a newer version)

    It did show up in the normal f-droid app for me though

    Cris_Color ,
    @Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

    Someone forked the project (made a copy and started making updates and improvements to the copy independent of the original developer) and I installed it directly from the forked github repo, where it was getting updates. But they didn't rename it until they published it on f-droid, so the app still showed up as openboard on my phone, just a newer version than the one available on f-droid

    I mean, he's responsible for a pretty heinous thing in this instance... It's not like people are pissing their pants over nothing.

    If your company publishes an explicitly fabricated headline stating there was a missile attack that never happened, generated by ai, and then presented to a ton of people on a major social media site, criticism is pretty deserved... (≖_≖ )

    God, generative ai is such a fucking caustic technology. I honestly don't see anything positive and not disgusting enabled by this tech.

    Edit: I see people don't agree, but like why can't ai stick to translating stuff and being useful rather than making horrifically unethical porn, taking the humanity out of art, and replacing peoples jobs with statistical content generation. I hate it here.

    Cris_Color ,
    @Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

    The distinction is that I can see worthwhile use cases for non-generative ai, and not for generative ai, and generative ai is built on theft of creative labor

    I'm not angry at people who use generative ai, I'm angry at the people who built it by stealing from creatives to build a commercial tool that can seemingly only be used in awful ways.

    Thanks for the rec :) I tried one of those extensions a while ago and it didn't help me so I uninstalled it, maybe I'll give no script a go. I'll probably just turn it off and on as needed

    To be totally honest a lot of why I appreciate you just pasting the whole thing is cause I'm only ever browsing via my phone and my phone is a decrepit piece of garbage so I don't usually go to links unless they seem extremely compelling 😅 I probably wouldn't have read the article had you not shared it in the comments, and I'm glad I read it, it was a good article

    It didn't? Last I heard google responded that it was an attempt to delay video loading for adblock users which seemed to most to be a transparent excuse. I haven't followed it closely though, I'd be curious to know more if there's an update

    No one thinks it'll succeed? Obviously you and I exist in very different parts of the linux sphere, cause I'm pretty sure X11 is all but dead as a project and its kinda just a question of how long it takes for Wayland to be feature complete enough to reach a critical mass of adoption. And its kinda feeling like we're currently on the cusp of being there with the major DEs moving towards discontinuing X11 support 😅

    It doesn't seem like anything happened with them, they're just published by a company that also spams seemingly hollow search results for reviews. Reviews it seems like they may not have meaningfully conducted. But serious eats isn't actually implicated in anything other than being published by them as best I can tell. Dotdash Meredith also seems to publish a bunch of other food/recipe sites too.

    Good post, thank you for blessing my feed with his presence

    Are there any genuine benefits to AI?

    I can see some minor benefits - I use it for the odd bit of mundane writing and some of the image creation stuff is interesting,, and I knew that a lot of people use it for coding etc - but mostly it seems to be about making more cash for corporations and stuffing the internet with bots and fake content. Am I missing something...

    Cris_Color ,
    @Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

    The problem is that most of the things it feels we can currently see applications for are... Kinda bad. Actually repulsive frankly. Like I don't want those things. I don't wanna talk to an ai to order my big mac or instead of just getting a highlighted excerpt from a webpage when I search things. I don't want a world where artists have to compete with image generators to make a living, or where weird creepy porn that chases and satisfies ever more unrealistic expectations is the norm. I don't want to talk to chat bots that use statistical analysis to convincingly sell me lies they don't understand.

    I just wanna talk to actual people. I wanna see art made by people, I wanna look at pictures of the bodies of actual human beings, I wanna see the animations that humans poured their soul into, I wanna see the actual text a person wrote on the subject I'm researching. I wanna do simple things, in simple ways, and the world that it feels like AI companies are offering us honestly sucks, and as soon as that door is fully opened things will just be permanently worse. Convenience is great but I don't want a robot to feed me a weird gross regurgitation of reality or approximation of human interaction to me like a bird that chews and digests its food for its babies. I don't wanna consume the spit-up of an overgrown algorithm. Its a gross idea of how we could engage with the world. It obfuscates the humanity of whatever it touches, and the humanity is the worthwhile part. There comes a point where the abstraction is abstracting away everything of value and leaving you with the most sanitized version.

    If ai was just gonna be used to improve medicine and translate books or webpages, or as interactive accsessibiltiy tool, or do actually helpful shit maybe I wouldn't be so opposed to it, but it feels like everything consumer or employee facing that ai is offering is awful and something I absolutely do not want. But companies don't care, and that shitty world is gonna be the reality cause it's profitable

    Yum! Brands, Inc. (sometimes called simply Yum!), formerly Tricon Global Restaurants, Inc., is an American multinational fast food corporation listed on the Fortune 1000. Yum! operates the brands KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and The Habit Burger Grill, except in China, where the brands are operated by a separate company, Yum China. Yum! previously also owned Long John Silver's and A&W Restaurants. The company was created as a spin-off of PepsiCo in 1997.

    I went and looked up the Wikipedia page out of curiosity when someone disagreed that they're a Chinese conglomerate and thought I'd share for anyone else reading the thread.

    Short answer: not a Chinese conglomerate.
