Dariusmiles2123 ,

I can clearly see this around me.

Not only women, but also elder men, who are really educated but lose their lucidity in front of fake news on the web. I guess it’s also because they come from a time where you were not swimming in fake news.

And sometimes, even if they think it might be fake news, they just send it to you to get your opinion on it.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I’m only using Siri to set a timer for cooking or laundry.

I don’t feel like it’s reliable enough to use it for anything else.

If some people are using it a lot, could you tell me what for?

I’d want it to assist me in a calendar and the organization of my kids custody, but it’s really not ready for important things with particularities..

Sounds like Lemmy to me😇

I don’t what more I could want from such a platform but maybe there is an advantage I’m not seeing.

Linus Tech Tips (LTT) release investigation results on former accusations (x.com)

There were a series of accusations about our company last August from a former employee. Immediately following these accusations, LMG hired Roper Greyell - a large Vancouver-based law firm specializing in labor and employment law, to conduct a third-party investigation. Their website describes them as “one of the largest...

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Could someone just give us a quick summary of what LTT is accused of?

Do we know if there is a court case about it? As this would be more interesting than just a release from the company auditing them?

Personally, I clearly don’t know so much about LTT, but I love their videos.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Ok thanks for the explanation.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

It’s really revolting to be forced to change phones just because of this.

A phone should be secured for way more than this!

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Peertube is great. And while the lack of an app is a problem, the lack of having a way to make money out if your videos is a bigger one for creators.

For now, they have to rely on Patreon or an equivalent.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I’m swiss and not a EU fan, but I’m really proud of how they are standing up and facing these huge companies.

We’ve clearly reached a point where these companies need to see that they can’t do everything they want.

Let’s fight for reparability, interoperability and privacy!

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Tilvids was easy and worked for me.

But yeah Peertube still needs some ease of use features.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Threema is the way to go🇨🇭

Dariusmiles2123 ,

That’s why I’ll keep buying physical for the games or movies I love.

The only question I have is what’s gonna happen as game discs are just becoming an access token to download the game and its updates.

I’d have nothing against digital games or movies if you didn’t see such behaviors.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I can understand piracy when they take away something you’ve already bought, but I’d not want to do it for something I haven’t bought yet.

I wanna be able to support people creating what I like.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

It’s good that people are worrying about this. Although, I haven’t heard of any disc game not being able to be played. I guess it would only happen if Sony/Microsoft go bankrupt or decide to close PlayStation/Xbox game updates servers.

It ain’t likely to happen but it’s important to be able to preserve games for the future as they are part of history just like paintings.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

As long as you have a way to download the data that ain’t a problem for me, but if one day Sony or EA closes without giving the update data to be available for everyone that would be a problem.

Still I don’t see the advantage for them to only put the early stages on the disc. Are they saving money this way?

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I can’t agree, but I can agree to disagree with you.

For me as long as you’re not paying for some form of art, you’re not supporting the artist, so you’re stealing.

But I’d be the first one to download a torrent if something I paid for kind of disappeared like this.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Okay I’ll watch to inform myself. Thanks

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I can’t read the article, but I ain’t surprised by the fact that no one wants to pay more than what Apple is already billing.

They are clearly trying to circumvent the rules just like the bad company they are.

Still I have to admit that their hardware and software is quite good even if I ain’t a fan.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Good news I guess as I’ll never again buy a new computer which can’t be upgraded in the long term.

It ain’t my vision anymore and I hope more and more consumers think about buying second hand or buying upgradeable computers.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Yeah of course you can find everything on Reddit and clearly not that much on Lemmy.

But Lemmy is the perfect alternative for me. I only go on Reddit through web search results on Ecosia. It’s really only useful for when I’m looking for a specific answer to a specific subject.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Scary but true..

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Lemmy topics are now found in search engines but I’m almost never specifically looking for something in Lemmy as I’m just browsing through my feed.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Clearly it’s amusing to see the difference in compliance when China wants something or when Europe wants something else😅

Dariusmiles2123 , (edited )

Yeah I couldn’t read the whole article, so what I’d want to know is if the AI generated images were shown with a disclosure or not. Because that changes everything..

Edit: apparently there was no disclosure in the movie, which is the problem

Dariusmiles2123 ,

8GB is enough as that’s what I have on my 2019 Surface Go.

But that’s a device I bought 399.- (almost the same as dollars) 5 years ago.

So I don’t think it’s okay to sell a new laptop with Pro in its name for a high price in 2024. Especially because it wouldn’t cost them much to upgrade the RAM.

It’s like buying a 30bhp car in 2024. Yeah it’s enough, but not for the price of a normal car.

Google fires 28 employees after protest over Israel cloud contract (www.theverge.com)

Google fired 28 employees in connection with sit-in protests at two of its offices this week, according to an internal memo obtained by The Verge. The firings come after 9 employees were suspended and then arrested in New York and California on Tuesday....

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Happy to be almost degoogled when I read such things.

If only it was easy to get rid of YouTube..

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I might start trying that just to avoid giving money/data to Google. I just wonder if there is an app and if the creators would still get paid. Would someone know?

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Yeah I tried Nebula a while ago but sadly it lacked the content I was looking for.

I’m into Linux, cars and basketball and none if these were well represented. Maybe it’s different now.

I’ll have a look at Greyjay.

Peertube with some Patreon support is fine for Linux but not for the other parts too..

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Could someone give me examples about fields where the AI is already useful?

Because right now it looks like the answer to a question no one asked.

I could see how it could be useful for NOC in videogames or as an assistant, but if it involves wasting so much energy, I don’t see the point.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

That's where I can't agree with you. I'd say we need to produce the same amount of energy while trying to have more efficient devices.

That's also why I'm asking what AI could bring to humanity. If it brings us ways to save energy and have enough food for a growing population, then I'd consider it. But for now, from what I know, it's just creating a new need when we are already consuming way too much and destroying our planet.

Instead of creating new needs, we should try to live with less, while still enjoying life.

Cars getting bigger and heavier is clearly true, but they are also consuming less (at least for ICE cars) than before. My Seat Leon Cupra is drinking way less fuel than my old Audi S4 Avant while being more spacious inside. I'm also sure that at one point we're gonna start having smaller and more efficient electric cars because not everyone wants a huge SUV.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Yeah clearly the PRO part with just 8Gb of RAM is the problem.

Come on that’s what I have on my Surface Go 1 from 2019. It runs Linux perfectly and is okay for my needs, but I wouldn’t put such specs on a PRO thing😅

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I’m sending this article to my girlfriend to convince her to ditch her Gmail account.

Not sure it’s gonna work 😅

On Lemmy, I’m almost sure only a few use Gmail because everyone is kind of tech savvy.

Ditching YouTube is more complicated, but ditching Gmail is easy.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Maybe tech savvy isn’t the right word, but grandma and grandpa might end up on Reddit, but not on Lemmy

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Well since it’s apparently something using your bones to conduct sound, I’d say it’s legitimate to ask if it’s safe or if it can lead to long term harm.

Same with all the waves emitted by phones, earbuds, WiFi, etc..

Fairbuds are Fairphone’s proof that we really could make better tiny gadgets (arstechnica.com)

But of course we all know that the big manufacturers don't do this not because they can't but because they don't want to. Planned obsolescence is still very much the name of the game, despite all the bullshit they spout about sustainability.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I love what fairphone and some other companies are doing.

Still some of their earphones got a 1/10 reparability on ifixit, so I’d really check how reparaible these ones are.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

While I’m not blaming you, what you’re saying is really the problem in our society.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Yeah apparently the newer ones got a 10/10 on ifixit so it’s way better and it’s what I would probably buy if I was on the market.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Isn’it that Google needs Firefox to stay alive as a browser? So the fact that Google is the default search engine as default is only a way to subsidize Firefox..

I’m just speculating as I don’t have much knowledge.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

We should never produce any plastic for throwable products, but such a product could be a good start for people who aren’t actively trying to avoid plastic packaging.

Still, we also have to change our wasteful mentality and way of life.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

How much more expensive would a dumb TV compared to a Smart TV for the same quality?

That’s a serious question as I had never thought about all these privacy issues before buying a TV.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

If you do that, depending on the TV, you might have some system messages and stuff on startup..

But yeah it’s a good start.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

And it should stay that way. I don’t want another product with planned obsolescence.

They could only try to end your TV by not supporting its apps because of its age, but luckily you can just plug a computer or a console on it to get all the apps you need.

Still, for now, I enjoy using my TV apps with an alternate launcher like Flauncher instead of the normal Android one.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I don’t agree with this as it sounds a bit elitist.

Some people just don’t want to buy another device and use more electricity to watch a movie.

But I know what you mean.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I’ll probably buy an electric car one day, but I’ll be paying a lot of attention to its repairability. We have to make sure brands understand that « programmed obsolescence » isn’t accepted by everyone!

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I’ve bought Threema for my whole family on iOS and Androids. Never paid in crypto but always with my normal credit card.

It works perfectly fine and I love it👍

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Exactly. Let us choose if we want to interact with WhatsApp or not.

I’d be ready to sacrifice some security in order to not have WhatsApp installed on my phone.

Of course it would be cool to just get rid of WhatsApp but I can’t force my whole basketball team to go on Threema..

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I can only agree with you, it is a choice we’re making.

Still I don’t feel like I want to tell people other than my family or friends to give up on me or switch to threema.

I’m still thinking about it, but the downsides are bigger than the upsides for now.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

It’s easy not to use Facebook, Snapchat or Instagram.

Even not using Google is easy as you can just use any other search engine like Ecosia.

Sadly, not using WhatsApp would be a real organizational problem for me with people I ain’t close enough to force them to use Threema.

So I’m forced to have both apps installed. Threema for 95% of the time and 5% with WhatsApp.
