Anybody know if it is hard to make a synthetic voice, just like you can make a synthetic face or synthetic music? Or is that the point: that a synthetic voice ended up sounding like her?

This is what you get when you mess with the S'pore police.

Critics of Putin and his allies targeted inside the EU with Israeli-made Pegasus spyware (www.theguardian.com)

At least seven journalists and activists who have been vocal critics of the Kremlin and its allies have been targeted inside the EU by a state using Pegasus, the hacking spyware made by Israel’s NSO Group, according to a new report by security researchers....

Apparently, that causes radio interference, but I don't think it lasts that long (days to hours)

If after all this shit we end up with retarded AI and lose libgen in the process, we'll end up with less than we started with...

At this point, it is just part of the corporate innovation cycle: first you make money by creating better products, once the tech matures and the gains in engineering are marginal, you move focus to sales and try to gain market. Then when the market is saturated, you move your focus to finance, aquisitions and cost-trimming.

From this pov, it looks like google got caught flat-footed (when it was moving from sales to finance) by a tech breakthrough and seems to be in "manage the shit out of this" mode, when now what they needed was to go back to an engineering focus, but by now it is too late, because the company already alienated the most dedicated engineers and can't get them back while still in sales/finance focus.

This is such a disinfo nightmare, imagine if it was trained (prompting would be easier actually) to spread high quality data with strategically planted lies to maximize harmful confident incorrectness.

And they are serving lots of ads under the radar and shaping their tastes by intermixing the ads seamlessly with entertainment to bypass our advertisement "antibodies". Sometimes I find some of them saying things and having interests I've never known they had only to find their feed randomly peppered with these interlopers.

It's the most annoying thing of these enthusiasts: they glorify cryptocurrencies and blockchain while glossing over the massively important and actually useful cryptography discipline in the background.

What have new generations been led into thinking that the internet is supposed to be? They dont even know what a directory is or what a file path is, because of design that dumbs things down...

It is important, because what people think the internet is and what they value will affect what it will evolve into.

E.g. wikipedia is reflects somehow my view of the internet in the 2000s (Encarta :D)...but for some people today the internet is just social media...or just videos?

BTW, does anybody know of an offline encyclopedia which works under Wine?

You can download wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Database_download

edit: if you really meant you want to see if any old encyclopedias work under wine, I never tried :D

This is not so bad. Reddit is crawling with bot spam and that will increase as users leave the platform every time it does a stunt to pump the stock price. The percentage of real/fake content will decrease and will poison the training pipelines. It's a great experiment to test model collapse in real time, really.

And still it would not be enough. You need to trust some core institutions and delegate on some people who know more than you, you can't be an expert on everything. Even smart people can be deeply wrong if they trust the wrong people or if they think their expertise makes them an expert on everything. You also need a little intellectual humility.

Apart from the whole explanation about interest rates and enshittification (which I have read about and written about before too), there may be another effect that I was not aware of until I watched this PBS documentary from 20 years ago about how marketing teams "managed" our generation's elusive tastes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tYRoiJvhJ4

Now think about how that manifests as 35-year-olds looking not just for cool, but money and power instead. You get the bitcoin bro, the MAGA, the mainstream conspiracist...instead of the reasonable thinking normies.

...or maybe I'm just seeing things...maybe I'm shoehorning this documentary into everything I read due to how cheated I feel looking back at how teens were manipulated...

Yea, try talking to chatgpt about things that you really know in detail about. It will fail to show you the hidden, niche things (unless you mention them yourself), it will make lots of stuff up that you would not pick up on otherwise (and once you point it out, the bloody thing will "I knew that" you, sometimes even if you are wrong) and it is very shallow in its details. Sometimes, it just repeats your question back to you as a well-written essay. And that's fine...it is still a miracle that it is able to be as reliable and entertaining as some random bullshitter you talk to in a bar, it's good for brainstorming too.

Gsus4 ,
@Gsus4@mander.xyz avatar

Haha, definitely, it's infuriating and scary. But it also depends on what you are watching for. If you are watching TV, you do it for convenience or entertainment. LLMs have the potential to be much more than that, but unless a very open and accessible ecosystem is created for them, they are going to be whatever our tech overlords decide they want them to be in their boardrooms to milk us.

Gsus4 ,
@Gsus4@mander.xyz avatar

Oh yes, it's great for that. My google-fu was never good enough to "find the name of this thing that does this, but only when in this circumstance"

OpenAI wants to raise 5-7 trillion dollars. Yes, Trillion (decrypt.co)

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is in talks with investors, including from the United Arab Emirates, to raise between $5 trillion to $7 trillion in funding. The goal, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal, is to increase the world's chip manufacturing capacity and enhance AI capabilities....

There are two possibilities: railway/dotcom bubble or monorail/bitcoin bubble ...and I'm not sure which one it is going to be yet. In the first case, a lot of people lose their investment, because they got too greedy and believed in huge returns...but the infrastructure remains and there is a net good to society and time spent specializing in it is worth it afterwards. The second, not so much, it is just a hype cycle with almost nothing of use left once it is gone and a lot of wasted time. I'm leaning towards the first, but if they don't find a way to bring energy costs down, it might end up in the monorail/bitcoin scenario...maybe 10% chance.

@Gsus4@mander.xyz avatar

That reminds me of a funny story from Encyclopedia Geopolitica where an expert in money laundering describes bitcoin around 2016 as being an el-dorado for financial forensics. It was so good at tracking funds that there was a bitcoin wallet address on a terrorism website on the deep web and they could see the donations arrive in real time and catch a pile of 'em. Maybe now they are more cautious and use more mixing layers, but it is still a terrible use case for that if you don't control transaction entry and exit nodes: the ledger is public and every transaction is traceable.
