You know, this thread really needs a list of of the publishers responsible for this travesty.

"Publishers Hachette Book Group Inc, HarperCollins Publishers LLC, John Wiley & Sons Inc and Penguin Random House LLC" - According to Reuters

Now here's a thought - what if the real workaround Google are using here is targeting only non manifest V3 users?

That would reduce the cost of doing this, since chrome users are already forced to swallow ads and could just be served as normal.

HexesofVexes ,

Good to know.

HexesofVexes ,

The end of a beautiful era - hats off for all the folks who made the pi what it is, the folks who will now be forced to make us sorrowful for what it will become.

HexesofVexes ,

Ehh, I have a different vision here - AI is useful, it's just going down the hypermonetisation path at the moment. It's not great because your data is being scraped and used to fuel paywalled content - that is largely why most folks object.

It's, also, badly implemented, and is draining a lot of system resource when plugged into an OS for little more than a showy web search.

Eventually, after a suitable lag, we'll see Linux AI as the AI we always wanted. A local, reasonable resource intense, option.

The real game changer will be a shift towards custom hardware for AIs (they're just huge probability models with a lot of repetitive similar calculations). At the moment, we use GPUs as they're the best option for these calculations. As the specialist hardware is developed, and gets cheaper, we'll see more local models and thus more Linux AI goodness.

HexesofVexes ,

Quick, someone pretend to be "the Linux company" and convince him to buy it!

HexesofVexes ,

You forgot to tell them that our head office is...

300 Funston Ave, San Francisco, CA 94118

...and all the play cards should be sent there!

HexesofVexes ,

Ah Windows 11, Vista 2.0.

HexesofVexes ,

That needed a trigger warning

HexesofVexes ,

And here was me thinking windows 8 was just a beta release of vista that was leaked by Microsoft!

Media praising bikes - "Look see they work"

Media criticising bikes - "Huh, would you believe the media spin right?"

HexesofVexes ,

Oh the media often goes both ways - in this case it appears that there are some issues that need resolving. Not everyone appreciates dodging bikes mounting the sidewalk, or doing an emergency stop when cyclists dismount the pavements without clear signaling - this is a problem for everyone but the person on the bike. Cars have their own issues, and those are widely covered.

While I very much agree every media story has "spin" (be it unwarranted cynicism or blind optimism), I am fairly certain it is the same on both sides of this issue.

Your point seems to be "all good things on bikes are backed up by studies, all bad things about bikes are big oil", and that is quite simply the best validation of my post you could ever give. Thank you.

HexesofVexes ,

Media praising bikes - “Bike brain goes brrring brrring!”

Media criticising bikes - “Car brain go vroom vroom vroom!”

Come now, let's be fair and open minded ;)

HexesofVexes ,

At this point, I can use Linux for most things except older fangames, reliable printing (seriously, cups is pain), and some mmorpgs.

Once I get a month without the university shitting its pants and changing policy overnight, I'll eat the learning curve and switch (actually learn to troubleshoot wine rather than relying on searches).

When I move, thinking mint with cinnamon because I love that desktop.

HexesofVexes ,

Definitely the wrong argument against bikes.

A lot of the best ones just come down to time - 30 mins commuting in traffic vs 70+ cycling. 1-2 grocery trips per week vs 4-6.

Good public transport can balance that out (though less so for shopping).

HexesofVexes ,

I teach - I have to debate my basic human rights every day (sleep and time spent not working are apparently not rights I hold according to our more entitled students/managers).

HexesofVexes ,

This comic made me realise that my Gameboy Advance SP is now older than my students... Where can I report this comic for making personal attacks?

HexesofVexes ,

We need an extra advert pushing rule 64 - "You MUST NOT cycle on a pavement". There are just too many damn cyclists whizzing past me on the pavement when I'm walking to and from work.

I get it, they're in a hurry to get home, but they need to accept that the safety of pedestrians is paramount.

HexesofVexes ,

Sounds to me like something to consider in the upcoming elections - a good issue to vote on.

Definitely still illegal.

HexesofVexes ,

Sounds good to me.

HexesofVexes ,

Somewhere out there a CEO thought this was a good idea. All it seems to be doing is pushing people to other platforms (the younger gen moving over to tiktok and the older gens moving 3rd party or just offline).

HexesofVexes ,

Ah the joys of software as a service.

I do wish I could say it will pass, but the ability to sell someone something they already purchased is the holy grail of sales. This isn't going to go away, and the EULAs you agree to ensure that it is entirely legal.

The only way to fight back is to vote with your wallet - sadly in monopolies that isn't really an option.

HexesofVexes ,

Once upon a time, updating your hardware every couple of years was essential. Your new hardware was a lot faster for normal use, and everyone benefitted.

Over time, however, people could wait longer between updates, as new hardware didn't impact daily use all that much.

The powers that were grew displeased, and then decided to force people to update more often. Newer hardware had shorter lifespans, software forced newer hardware, software as a service became king.

The End?

HexesofVexes ,

That story isn't written... yet. The future can be changed, if enough people drive that change (valve is working wonders here).

HexesofVexes ,

Hey now, that's just not true (!)

If you pull yourself up by your bootstraps, work an extra shift, maybe sell some things you don't need, you can afford a McChicken Sandwich (!)

HexesofVexes ,

I think a lot of equity arguments bug me because they often fail to address the real issue (at least in the workplace). It's a matter of attitude, rather than parity/proportionality.

However much we hate it, the majority of people in a stem field will still seek a straight white man out when we look for authority/expertise. That isn't because they are the greatest expert, or that they hold the highest accessible authority, but because it is an ingrained belief. That's just wrong, on so very many levels, that I cannot even begin to express how stupid it is.

Some people have spotted this issue, but their solution is abhorrent - denigrate this group. Raise a generation that looks on this group with contempt, to at least remove the component of authority. It will solve the problem, but it will create a lot more down the line as it becomes the accepted solution. Shall we have a generational genetic lottery forever?

Oddly enough, I think the "blurring of gender lines" brought about by the trans movement might offer a more meaningful solution to some part of this problem, as it erases the categories themselves, rather than attempting to shift their position.

Hits a buzzer

Countries where "lobbying" is popular

HexesofVexes ,

Ah, another arms race has begun. Just be wary, what one person creates another will circumvent.

HexesofVexes ,

I've said it before and I'll say it again, when humanity is wiped out future species will find a Nokia on half battery and a fully working 1080Ti.

HexesofVexes ,

Y'see, back in the day parents were not technically literate because the world was mid-societal shift. "Protect the children" (because parents are unable to) had some justification.

Today, basic computer literacy is a survival skill in the UK. The level of literacy needed to track your own kid is not that high (or expensive to rent).

If you are letting kids use tech you don't understand, and are not willing to invest the time/money to track yourself, that's a you problem. It shouldn't become a me problem.

As for "yeah but what about smart kids", I've got some bad news for you. They will always find a way around ANYTHING you set up.

HexesofVexes ,

It's a tricky one because of the nature of the net. Let's say we have three kids: Timmy, Jimmy and Harry.

Timmy starts looking up "tits", because Timmy loves titties. He's curious, and you probably want to have a talk about acting and how porn isn't reality.

Jimmy, well, Jimmy saw a videogame character tied up and it made him feel good, so he starts looking for that online. He's about to explore the BDSM scene. He's going to need the "safe sane consensual" talk, otherwise his explorations might get him, or someone else, hurt. He'll need more of a talk than Timmy!

Harry loves hentai; he found some when looking for pictures of his favourite cartoon character. Harry is going to need a long talk about fantasy Vs reality, otherwise he's going to disappoint a lot of women! Wait a moment, most of the things he's looking at involve animals and women... Might be time to get some therapy!

In all three of these cases a different style and level of parental intervention was required. You watch your kids because they're kids, and kids are experts at getting themselves (and others) hurt. Parents need to watch their kids because it's their job to intervene, and to decide the method of intervention.

However, we've not gone over the case of Lizzy, a girl cursed with religious fundamentalist parents. When they find out she's more interested in girls than boys, she'll be subjected to inhumane treatment to "fix" her. So there is a grey area here - not all parents should be parents.
