HobbitFoot ,

Voting doesn't mean you are barred from other political action. It is important to put political pressure on the people you vote for, including organizing for specific politics.

You don't need DNC permission to organize if you vote Democrats in the general election.

HobbitFoot ,

And it is a gamble that hasn't paid off in history.

HobbitFoot ,

They were. The whole concept of primaries came about because progressives tried reforming the nomination process via laws. When one progressive Republican ran as a third party instead, it became obvious that the better reform standard was to fix the party nomination process.

HobbitFoot ,

It is too bad they weren't able to make Switch a trans character.

HobbitFoot ,

IT don't like it. Lock the taskbar. Lock the taskbar.

HobbitFoot ,

I feel like even if you get rid of the screens, what else do teenagers have?

HobbitFoot ,

I'd like to pretend fascists aren't there, but there they are.

HobbitFoot ,

Given that the developers have publicly stated that there should be tons of instances run by anyone, pushing that much responsibility to admins with command line access is only asking for problems.

HobbitFoot ,

4K came out in 2012 and 8K just isn't that popular, in part due to content issues but also people's eyesight. If you don't need a new TV now, why would you buy an upgrade?

    They've become an American Nintendo.

    HobbitFoot ,

They are both working in the self interest of their platform, which is where they make their money.

It just happens to be that Nintendo's platform is tied to hardware while Valve's platform isn't.

    HobbitFoot ,

Why buy a company that can't make money and intentionally kills decent revenue streams?

    HobbitFoot ,

Also I can't pirate my vacuum cleaner.

    Yet

    HobbitFoot ,

So this means you can misgender them back, right?

    HobbitFoot ,

Based on what I've seen on the public facing part of the developer side, I get the feeling this isn't the kind of group that can build the kind of organization required to make this sustainable in the long run.

I'm just waiting for when Beehaw releases that they've given up on Lemmy and have created a new tech stack.

    HobbitFoot ,

I mention a new tech stack because Beehaw brought it up as an option and a lot of people have commented on the difficulty of development in this environment.

    HobbitFoot ,

Why do you think there is so much disparity between your bosses and your clients?

    HobbitFoot ,

    Sounds like shitty management.

    HobbitFoot ,

Crabs in a bucket makes sense for the staff, but not the management. Management should be judging with outputs in mind.

    HobbitFoot ,

I feel like some bean counter figured out somewhere that the big money is making a Skinner box instead of the older model of a basic game combined with DLC.

    HobbitFoot ,

The economy looks to be good, but the tech sector isn't the economy. We're at the popping of another tech bubble as recently developed product lines aren't generating the returns that were expected of them. Outside of AI, there isn't a reason to invest in tech, so why people to develop in tech?

    HobbitFoot ,

    What do you drive?

    HobbitFoot ,

Unemployment is still low. The stock market is still high. Inflation is down to below historic averages.

The raw numbers look good. And if you want to complain about inequality, unions have been winning major concessions in a lot of their contracts recently, so wages have been going up as well.

    HobbitFoot ,

The big deal is that this is a mobile VR headset. I don't know of another VR headset you can walk around in.

    HobbitFoot ,

Tankies suck, as they make it real easy to turn legitimate policy gripes into just cheering for the other team.

    HobbitFoot ,

My understanding is that you didn't see your career advance in Google if you maintained an existing product, only if you launched new ones. So, there is an internal bias in development teams to create new products while not keeping them around.

In some cases, this would encourage Google developers to relaunch products rather than improve existing products.

    HobbitFoot ,

You still have massive server costs. You have to maintain the massive dynamic comment database along with pictures now.

They are still paying for developers to make new things, both on the front ends and the back end.

Reddit: 'We Are in the Early Stages of Monetizing Our User Base' (www.404media.co)

Reddit said in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission that its users’ posts are “a valuable source of conversation data and knowledge” that has been and will continue to be an important mechanism for training AI and large language models. The filing also states that the company believes “we are in the early...

    HobbitFoot ,

The start of the bubble popping was the increases in interest rates. We've seen several online companies shut down already because the free money isn't there any more and there is no path to monetization.

The problem with the Fediverse right now is that it is all run on volunteer labor and donations, similar to an early Reddit. It will be interesting to see how a distributed system solves this problem.

    HobbitFoot ,

Some AI models already argue when people point out inaccuracies, just like on Reddit.

Vice is basically dead — Thousands of stories written over the past two decades could soon be deleted without any warning::CEO Bruce Dixon told staffers that Vice Media will lay off hundreds of employees and stop publishing stories on the site.

    HobbitFoot ,

And people will bitch and moan about a paywall.

    HobbitFoot ,

Does such a system exist, and how do you implement it without a third party login system?

    HobbitFoot ,

Advertising seems to be a dead end. The patron model is starting, but it seems focused on certain personalities. I don't believe anyone has developed a payment system yet that pays for cents at a time.

    HobbitFoot ,

Probably because it could raise copyright issues for Beehaw since Beehaw would be hosting the article.

    HobbitFoot ,

Lemmy was founded on the idea that different instances can decide questions like this for themselves.

It seems that Beehaw has chosen one direction, but there may be other instances out there that have chosen another direction.

    HobbitFoot ,

Maybe, but users from other instances would be lowest opinions I would expect the admins to consider. I would expect mods, financial contributers, and users registered to this instance to have a far greater day in how this instance is run.

    HobbitFoot ,

There was an answer from a mod, they don't want to infringe on the copyright here.

    HobbitFoot ,

No. It is worse if they try to make money on it, but a profit motive isn't necessary.

    HobbitFoot ,

Probably. The industry is still trying to figure out pricing, and the cost of making content isn't matching the cost consumers are willing to pay for it.

    HobbitFoot ,

Hell, the basic idea behind squatter's laws is that the squatter is actually doing something with the land instead of a derilect landlord.

If a bank isn't immediately selling the foreclosed home, they should lose it.

    HobbitFoot ,

It gets weirder when you find porn at work when you weren't looking for it.

    HobbitFoot ,

It isn't ideal because it slows the project down, which may be good if it reduces technical debt.

AR of that visual quality has required the user to be stationary and tied to a large computer.

    HobbitFoot ,

And if not that, you also have internal meetings where managers love to turn their cameras on.

It also doesn't have to be perfect, just good enough.

    HobbitFoot ,

Growth is being driven a lot by the Steam Deck.

ChromeOS is listed in a separate category.
