This has been available for most of the year. What took any tech news org so long to even awknowledge its existence?

InfiniWheel ,

"Our users, who don't have as much free time as they did during the pandemic, didn't binge watch a 13 episode show, one hour per episode, the very day it came out like they did during lockdown? Cancel the show its a flop"

InfiniWheel ,

This is actually one of the few cases where it makes sense. Its for alt-text for people who browse with TTS

InfiniWheel ,

The only issue for Firefox's translator currently is the time it takes to load at first, or the fact you have to download each model first. Its not some monumental task, but it does have more friction than Google's "automatically send the site you are browsing to our server"

InfiniWheel ,

Yeah, that's odd. I could swear Google had something in its terms that specified you couldn't mix its results with other search engines.

InfiniWheel ,

Hoy shit man this just unlocked so many memories

InfiniWheel ,

And also the maintainers being too trusting. They openly discussed pirate ROMs in the server and such.

InfiniWheel ,

It would be pretty useless as it is. Even for them. Federation only really mattered for a few people (us), most of their userbase doesn't care or know so its not like it was meant to be a hook to lead them in.

InfiniWheel ,

Maybe its cause its corporate backed instead of some guys? As in, they have tech support and people to sue.

InfiniWheel ,

I quite like it precisely because it provided no recommendations. I'm not enticed to waste time watching something I wasn't interested in 3 seconds ago. If I want to watch something I have to look it up and that's usually the end of it.

InfiniWheel ,

Its honestly amazing on its own that they are quite good at drawing as an EMT. You'd think they'd be so busy nowadays.

Apex Legends streamers surprised to find aimbot and other hacks added to their PCs in the middle of major competition via anti-cheat software (www.pcgamer.com)

Wow it finally happened. So glad I switched to steam running on linux mint last week. I refused to install helldivers because it wanted to install some no holds barred god level permissions anti-cheat software. Windows 11 was the last straw for me. Good times.....

InfiniWheel ,

Doesn't the compatibility layer mean its restricted to its own wine prefix? Or am I misunderstanding?

InfiniWheel ,

It'll probably be open for anyone to use. They'll just be pissy about it.

The former lead dev (who is still part of the team) seems to think many people are out to get him for no good reason. He has claimed repeatedly that Calyx devs have sent harassers to target him for years (from spamming gore or nazi content in the matrix channels, to swatting him and almost getting him killed by the police) and that they constantly speak ill of him, but has never actually shown any proof. Instead, he sources his own past claims about how he has shown proof, in a sort of endless loop.

Also, youtuber Techlore made a 5 second joke about GOS's extreme approach to security in his mostly positive review of it, which the lead Dev took as a personal attack. After which he started attributing harassment to him too. He made a later video talking about it, and Louis Rossman commented on it expressing concern. After which, the lead Dev accused him to being complicit in the harassment.

Eventually he stepped down as project manager, citing how the harassment and bullying he constantly got was too much. But to my knowledge no one has actually seen it ever.

InfiniWheel ,

This seems like a rather really hyeprspecific use case than "the reason platforms like Matrix don't get as much traction as Discord".

InfiniWheel ,

It mostly seems like your personal experiences and server choices might be giving you the wrong idea. It might be the reason your communities don't make the switch, but the wider userbase doesn't really know about any this at all.

If it was as prevalent and the big reason, plurality would be more common in general servers or those dedicated to some other topic. It's my, and probably a sizeable portion of people's, first time hearing about PluralKit. Even knowing about plurality and systems prior to this. I'm in a bunch of servers with indescribable amounts of people and this really hasn't come up at all.

If you were to ask a random discord user/mod/server owner why they don't switch to Matrix, they most likely won't answer "It doesn't have PluralKit and I/my friends use it", but "What's Matrix?/What's PluralKit?/How so you use it?/Discord's fine/But why?/IDC"

Like, all power to you, this shows an important missing feature for your community in Matrix, but I don't think this is it.

[OC] Anyone else insist on using the generic name for all meds? (lemmy.world)

Image: 4 panels organized in a rectangle following a sequential order like a comic strip. The first panel is of a man with a very serious face stating, "Hey man, got any diphenhydramine?" The second panel is a grainy picture of the actor Robert Downey Jr. with a slightly inquisitive face and saying, "What's that?" The third...

InfiniWheel ,

In my country we mostly use the generic names, save for very few exceptions, and even then they are used interchangeably with the generic name.

InfiniWheel ,

The official instantce, meet.jit.si, now requires an account to be made through Google, Facebook or Apple (for the host). Community hosted instances still allow anonymous meetings but may not have all the features in the main instance (since some require hosting other services, like etherpad and excalidraw)

InfiniWheel ,

You have the big plus of not having the WhatsApp app installed and snooping around with all those permissions it has.

InfiniWheel ,

Its only big in the US, most of the planet only sees iMessage as that borderline useless app Apple bundles in their phones.

InfiniWheel ,

Most of the world doesn't use SMS, they use WhatsApp. Plus, SMS is even worse than WhatsApp for privacy and security. And stopping using WhatsApp in most of the world is like not using email, so no "I don't have WhatsApp, you can only contact me through signal" is possible.

InfiniWheel ,

I don't just mean socially speaking. But for contacting services and stuff. My car insurance company only accepts reports through Whatsapp or through calling a guy to come look at your face for a fee.

InfiniWheel ,

Right? It seems the official discord also had links to where to get ROMs, as in pirated ROMs. I can't believe they got complacent knowing Nintendo could come after them at any second.

InfiniWheel ,

If that were the case, wouldn't the entire Fediverse be against it? Since they can't really be deleted because it gets sent everywhere.

InfiniWheel ,

Tbf, people intentionally screwed up Tay

Tumblr and Wordpress to Sell Users’ Data to Train AI Tools (www.404media.co)

this could not be timed worse for Tumblr which is in huge hot water with its userbase already for its CEO breaking his sabbatical to ban a prominent trans user for allegedly threatening him (in a cartoonish manner), and then spending a week personally justifying it increasingly wildly across several platforms. the rumors had...

Google says its AI image-generator would sometimes 'overcompensate' for diversity (apnews.com)

Google says its AI image-generator would sometimes 'overcompensate' for diversity::Google apologized Friday for its faulty rollout of a new artificial intelligence image-generator, acknowledging that in some cases the tool would “overcompensate” in seeking a diverse range of people even when such a range didn’t make sense.

InfiniWheel ,

Also, when the prompt is modified to include "native american" it seems to mostly return the most stereotypically dressed people possible. Like wearing traditional garbs and headdresses when everyone else portrayed is wearing setting appropriate clothing.

InfiniWheel ,

I do know what you mean. But I'm taking this in another direction to point out that, Christ, a lot of writers seem unable to not make the male and female leads of anything fall in love for no reason. Literally most of the forced romance is hetero romance.

InfiniWheel ,

Some pre 2005 people are zoomers tho, the oldest zoomers are 24. Gen Alpha might be more fitting.

InfiniWheel ,

Using whatsapp is an absolute necessity in most of the world, its the only way to communicate with coworkers, classmates, businesses and even some government services. Not using it means you are essentially disconnected from the world. Good luck convincing more than 2 close friends to install Signal just to talk with you. No one uses SMS. FB really is that dominant.

InfiniWheel ,

Like another person said, most people don't even bother installing adblockers on their browsers and yet complain about ads anyway, despite them being like 4 clicks away. Even after being told they exist and how to do it. Now imagine that with an entirely "new" "unheard of" messaging app.

InfiniWheel ,

Its hard to get others to do so, for seemingly no reason. I have Signal installed, have had it for years, have told all my contacts about it. Only like 3 installed it, but quickly forgot about it. I still have to have WhatsApp installed to not fall off the world so they end up texting me from WA anyway.

Its not like SMS vs Signal where there is a clear benefit to the average Joe to use Signal, there's no difference between Signal and WhatsApp to the average person so they will just keep using WhatsApp out of habit.

InfiniWheel ,

If you don't live in a place with WhatsApp as the dominant chat app I don't think you could get it. I don't have FB, Instagram, Snapchat, Google, Outlook, or any form of social media, I am as disconnected as can be. But WA is truly inescapable.

Need to ask a very specific question about taxes? The government support person only answers through WhatsApp. Need to file an insurance report and even check if it was approved? WhatsApp. Need to schedule a certification exam? Whatsapp. Hell, more and more companies and government services are moving to WA only customer service/support, like not even help you if you show up in person and in some cases their phone lines (which are "always busy") just direct you to their WhatsApp.

Its also the only way of reaching coworkers/classmates. Not for like socializing or messing around, but for group work, file sharing, scheduling meetings, sharing important/urgent announcements, etc. And good luck getting mere acquaintances to install a secondary chat app just to talk to you, when we can barely get our friends to install adblockers in their browsers. Well, there are other secondary ways to reach them, Facebook Messenger and Instagram DMs, but we both likely agree on what to make of these ones.

I hate Facebook and am aware of their practices, but they have reached an absolute dominance over communication in most of the world. You can't just ignore them in day to day life.

InfiniWheel ,

Thats great, now try that with acquaintances, coworkeea, classmates or companies that only chat through WhatsApp. I wish I could go nuclear but WA is a necessity.

Vice is basically dead — Thousands of stories written over the past two decades could soon be deleted without any warning (nymag.com)

Vice is basically dead — Thousands of stories written over the past two decades could soon be deleted without any warning::CEO Bruce Dixon told staffers that Vice Media will lay off hundreds of employees and stop publishing stories on the site.

InfiniWheel ,

I don't know much about the internet archive's inner workings. But rather recently a huge collection of old 70s-00s tokusatsu shows and movies got deleted along with the uploader. Some remain on piracy sites, but a lot probably live now on some old torrents. We really need an archive of the internet archive.

InfiniWheel ,

It says coming soon for me

InfiniWheel ,

iMessage really is just mostly used in the US, like Japan with Line. Most countries around the world don't use any SMS(or adjacent) services for chatting. So its not really a priority when people barely use it. Unlike the AppStore where every Apple user is forced to use it anyway

InfiniWheel ,

Aren't we already with this? I never see anyone going "You go queen!" over someone's virtual bf

InfiniWheel ,

It was a pull request to add opt-out analytics that got blown out of proportion, where the real issue was the EULA and how tonedeaf of a move it was considering the community around Audacity. IIRC, they ended up replacing it with opt-in analytics.

InfiniWheel ,

Can you even buy these without ending up on a list somewhere? Since its only sold online this feels like the kind of thing that gets you on a list

InfiniWheel ,

Look at it from the bright side, if everyone uses it incorrectly it will eventually become the correct version. That's how we got so many romance languages in the first place.
