These are alternatives? This is essentially a list of software that I use.

Joelk111 ,

Not a day goes by where I don't use our company's internal LLM instance to generate or debug some code. It isn't due to burnout, it's due to convenience.

Joelk111 ,

I'm using my old laptop as a PleX server. It does pretty well. It has a GTX1050 in it, so not too bad. Saves me having to put real hardware in my NAS

Joelk111 ,

That's pretty wild tbh, it's old. I got it for gaming back in the day before I had a desktop.

iPhones And Androids Can Now Warn You of 'Secret Trackers' (www.ibtimes.co.uk)

In a collaborative effort, Apple and Google have developed an industry-standard detection feature called "Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers" (DULT) for Bluetooth trackers. This standard allows users on iOS and Android devices to be alerted if an unknown Bluetooth tracker is monitoring their location.

Joelk111 ,

Could you elaborate? I haven't got a clue what you mean.

Joelk111 ,

What do you mean by own though? I just don't get the gist of your comment. How does it relate to Apple and Google working together to ensure these can't be used for stalking? What's your point?

Joelk111 ,

Yeah, I thought of that, but it didn't make any sense with the context of the article. We already know we're always being tracked, that isn't what we're talking about here.

If we're going to have these trackers around, it totally is a responsible move to implement this feature, I agree 100%

Joelk111 ,

I hate Facebook. Marketplace is unfortunately the only place a lot of stuff is listed, even though it also sucks. I said I wanted stuff within 85 miles, why are you showing me stuff that's 400 miles away??? Craigslist is genuinely a better experience (via the mobile app) these days, but no one uses it.

Joelk111 ,

Often I do too, but I'm in a mid-sized city so sometimes it isn't an option if I want to find a deal on something.

I only set up notifications on Craigslist's app though.

Joelk111 ,

It's easy though, just pay an extra 36 bucks per year, bringing your total prime sub cost to 176 bucks per year, very reasonable!

Joelk111 ,

Automatic physical camera shutters? Only ones I can think of on phones are pop-up selfie cameras like the LG Wing and OnePlus 7. LG doesn't make phones any more and OnePlus dropped the pop-up camera in their next phone, and haven't brought it back.

Joelk111 ,

I'm still using re-vanced, as last time I used Grayjay there were still some missing features as compared to revanced, a complete lack of a webapp, and lack of multiple video services I use. Between all of those things, I just didn't find it worth sticking with it.

However, I did pay the 10 bucks and do come back to visit it occasionally.

Joelk111 , (edited )

Yes, same as the normal YouTube app. It is nice that Grayjay allows 2160p downloads though.

I think it also supports third party download tools, if you don't pay for premium.

Joelk111 ,

Enshittification is used plenty often enough, we don't need to be using it incorrectly imo.

Joelk111 ,

They're largely disregarding the fact that the laptop is easily repairable... They're kinda missing the whole point of the device/company.

Joelk111 ,

Proton can make games from the windows store that I already own work on Linux? Proton can make games that are borked rated on protondb work?

I love Linux as much as the next tech nerd, I have a SteamDeck that I essentially use as a laptop when away from home, and I tried dailying Manjaro on my main machine for a couple months. Proton doesn't solve everything.

I can totally understand running windows on your main gaming machine, as that's what I do. I don't like it, but all of my games work. I also don't want to have to re-buy games on Steam that I own via the Windows store.

Joelk111 ,

If I had a dollar for every time Comcast told me to check if I qualify for this rebate, even after I tell them that I do not qualify, my internet cost would make sense.

Joelk111 ,

According to the example, it just shoves your video to the side and shows a static ad, not a video. If it played a video with audio that would be fucked. If it's just silent stuff, honestly not even that intrusive or crazy imo. Smart TV boxes have been doing similar shit for a while, right?

Also, at least with YouTube you can pay to avoid it, if you'd like.

Joelk111 ,

Laughs in.... Supporting creators by supporting them in other ways than watching ads on their videos, right? Right???

Joelk111 ,

Sweet, for sure, I have no issue with that.

The people complaining about ads who don't support creators in other ways is what bothers me.

Joelk111 ,

If so it won't be a buy for me, wifi7 is a must.

Joelk111 ,

Yeah, that's all Alexa and Google have on home assistant. Not to mention that sometimes you have to write yaml to create automations.

Joelk111 ,

I'm in the insider program (been too lazy to reset my computer and leave it) and for a while it would auto launch with the sidebar open for a bit. I had to close the copilot sidebar every time I booted my computer. They have since removed that "feature"

Joelk111 ,

No. The lack of variety in options is honestly astonishing. I'm looking for a cheap zigbee button that is wall powered. They don't really seem to exist. Who the fuck wants to be constantly replacing batteries in smart things? Probably the same people who don't want wires running everywhere, but their priorities are in the wrong place imo.

I'm also kinda shocked that a product doesn't exist that's just a AA or AAA fake battery with wires hanging off of it that you could plug into the wall. Probably a safety hazard or something.

Joelk111 ,

Holy crap, I'll be purchasing that ASAP, guess I just wasn't able to find them, thank you!

And yes, I was aware that simply wiring the device directly into the wall wouldn't work.

Joelk111 ,

I can't replace the wall switches, as I'm renting a manufactured home, which has some really wackily wired light switches, likely to save money. If I owned a home I'd definitely install some smart switches and utilize those.

Joelk111 ,

I'll have to do some research... Wild that I wasn't able to find them previously.

Joelk111 ,

Still something I'd have to think about in 5 years. Also, if I use rechargeables, which I would, it'll potentially be less.

I don't want to have to think about it. Ever.

Also, if you have a bunch of switches in your house, even at 5 years you could be replacing batteries in one switch or another every few months.

At 10 battery operated smart things in the house, thats - on average - swapping batteries every 6 months. As you add more smart things, that frequency goes up. I don't want to be doing that, ever.

Joelk111 ,

Installing an automation and checking battery level manually, or even having an automation tell me to replace the batteries in devices means I'm thinking about it... Not to mention that I still have to replace the batteries which, shockingly, involved thinking about replacing the batteries.

Joelk111 ,

I still surf both. Unpopular, I know, but Lemmy does not yet have the super niche communities that barely exist on reddit.

Imo, it's about the same. Some subs have gotten worse, some have gotten better, but that's how it's always been.

Joelk111 ,

That's good for sure. I still enjoy browsing those many nice communities unfortunately... I definitely search for stuff like that when I need to find specific things.

Firefox saw an increase in users (~50% in Germany and ~30% in France) following Apple’s default browser changes in the EU, as did Brave. (www.theverge.com)

Firefox spokesperson Christopher Hilton tells The Verge that the browser has seen a more than 50 percent jump in users in Germany and a nearly 30 percent increase in France....

Joelk111 ,

Yeah, I switch browsers like I change my clothes, and Firefox has been awesome compared to Brave, Edge, and other chromium browsers.

Joelk111 ,

Had me in the first half.

I stick around with Windows due to shitty DRM and VR compatibility. It's been a couple years since I last tried Linux, so maybe it's gotten better. I should probably try it again.

Joelk111 ,

I'll have to look into ALVR. I've got an Index.

I also remembered that I wouldn't be able to play The Crew 2 due to shitty DRM, as well as Forza Horizon, unless I re-purchase it on Steam, as the windows store edition doesn't work on Linux (from what I understand). I really don't want to dual-boot again. I'll wait just a bit longer for Linux to get better and windows to get more enshitified.

Joelk111 ,

That'd be wild if it works. Might have to try Linux just for that.

The DRM and Anticheat (that I forgot to mention) games are online, so piracy isn't really an option so that's still an issue :/

Joelk111 ,

It has. It's been two or three years. In that time the SteamDeck has launched, bringing huge attention to Linux.

The question is whether the things that I want to play have improved.

Joelk111 ,

As someone who subscribes to many channels, likely over 100, that post anywhere from daily to a few times per year, fuck that.

You should also consider using Grayjay or something instead to avoid that tedium.

Joelk111 ,

Congratulations?

1.6 Petabits or 200TB

The article says "What is that in terms humans understand," then does some math, and produces the figure of 14000 4k movies.

I'm a human and 200TB makes a lot more sense to me than 14000 4k movies. That isn't a standard unit. 14000 4k movies means nothing. You can have a 4k movie that's 200GB (that'd be 2.8PB) or 2GB (that'd be 28TB). What's the bit rate? In the article they mentioned that they just assumed that a 4k 2 hour long movie is 14GB.

What I'm way more concerned about is how expensive the disks and readers/writers are. According to the article, the disks are manufactured similarly to the CD, but what about the readers/writers? Could we see these as competitors to HDDs? 200TB is friggin insane, at a good price you'd be spending 2 grand on that much HDD storage.

Joelk111 ,

Yeah, for sure, I look for my larger files when I'm legally obtaining my movies.

I'd definitely have a place for them in my NAS, if they were much cheaper than HDDs. It'd be like an SSD cache to go with your HDDs, but a third slower tier for rarely accessed files.

Joelk111 ,

I haven't heard drifting referred to as limited slip differential trips before, but that's good that you aren't texting and drifting.

Joelk111 ,

My doubt is based on the fact that public transportation and bicycle infrastructure is the obvious better and more environmentally economical solution for the majority of the population that lives in cities.

I say this as a gear head, do we really want people on the roads that don't want to be driving? It should be a choice, not a requirement. Plus, driving in cities sucks.

Joelk111 ,

That's why I said cycling infrastructure

Joelk111 ,

Also, tap the three dots on videos you don't want to watch and select don't recommend channel or not interested.

Joelk111 ,

The way I was able to ration it out is that the kid is heading for an unextinquished (or maybe an in use, idk) campfire to put it out before it becomes a forest fire.

Joelk111 ,

At this point I feel like it's intentional, and either way, am not surprised. Unlike a lot of other commentors here, I don't see the point in wasting mental power on worrying about it.

Joelk111 ,

Yeah, it shows up there once, then is buried to the right of the filters afterwards.
