Like smart phones have now bounced to getting larger again, cars used to be big and got smaller because of Korea and gas prices. But then they are getting bigger again because of regulations and showing off.

JohnDClay ,

I thought it was taking about concession stand concessions, and was really confused as to how they were vital to the bourgeois patching capitalism. Now I'm more confused.

JohnDClay ,

It's also common for governments to say their spy sats failed so that it's more ambiguous what assets they have. I don't know if someone has a telescope tracking shot though, that could probably confirm or deny.

JohnDClay ,

Is it because the golden ratio contains the square root of three which is used in constructing triangles in 3d?

Wait no, it uses the square root of 5 plus one, that is pretty magical!

JohnDClay , (edited )

A year or two ago they were blowing one up every month or so. They've become more rare recently as they've dialed in the engines.

JohnDClay ,

Different philosophy. Play it safe and analyze everything extensively to make sure you don't have a PR nightmare. That leads to less aggressive designs and longer schedules, but looks better for the public and Congress.

JohnDClay ,

Also this is just an engine test at McGregor. They used to blow them up much more often as they were finding the limits. Nowadays it's much less common, hence why it's news when they broke one.

JohnDClay ,

As in the military and NASA aren't allowed to pay them to launch things? That's the vast majority of the government funding they've gotten.

JohnDClay ,

Likely cheaper per launch with much higher payload capacity.

JohnDClay ,

Genocide is definitely politics, but should definitely be talked about.

JohnDClay ,

Or use the Ukraine flag since Russia is currently committing genocide with forced relocations including children. Russification is not great.

JohnDClay ,

How are you sure the soldiers will follow though with their end of the bargain? Once they give you the gun, can you try and shoot the soldiers? Could you bribe the soldiers to release all the prisoners?

Thought experiments like this have two options, but real life is never only two options. Getting into that mindset can lead people to accept things for the greater good without exploring all the options.

JohnDClay ,

That links back to this thread for me

JohnDClay ,

You're referring to the conversation under this comment?

Everyone's safety is more important than anyone's feelings.

JohnDClay ,

And you disagree with the sentiment of that comment? Sorry, I'm trying to figure this out.

Men (especially young boys) being raped is a also a huge problem, but are you saying they shouldn't be lumped together? Or that expressing one without the other is fine since they are sufficiently distinct?

JohnDClay ,

Pulling the fuse that includes OnStar at least keeps it from calling home. But there's usually some collateral damage.

JohnDClay ,

My car microphone stopped working

JohnDClay ,

I think my car only came with a free trial for that service, I think you needed to pay after a certain amount of time. Cell phone works well enough for me.

JohnDClay ,

I estimate that the probability of injuring my arms and that no one else is around to call for help is low enough to not be worth the monthly subscription.

JohnDClay ,

I judge based on probability and severity, and the probability is small enough even though the severity is high for me to not be concerned.

JohnDClay ,

Okay... You seem needlessly confrontational...

JohnDClay ,

Boeing makes jdam bombs, that would put them up there.

JohnDClay ,

Defense of Ukraine is a great example of how weapons can be used for good. But definitely not all that these companies do, as Gaza shows.

JohnDClay ,

Lol no

JohnDClay ,

Wait till we find one based on steel's phase changes!

Steel crystals

JohnDClay ,

I think Lemmy strips it, right? That's why pictures were uploading sideways for a while?

JohnDClay ,

Desalination is also a good way of getting lithium right now, it's just a bit less cost effective than surface mining dried oceans currently. Maybe if sodium demand also goes up, it'll be effective to capture desalination salts for both lithium and sodium.

JohnDClay ,

Where do you live that it's often -30? And if you need to drive 300mi to a doctor's for a medical emergency at that one time if year, do you have someone else you could ask or only drive there and worrying about charging later?

JohnDClay ,

100+ miles is fine for most any EV. My bolt during the winter was still able to get 200mi+ at 70mph in sub zero F weather. With a home charger it's fine. It's road trips that would push further. I've found charging adds maybe 25% time to long trips. But that doesn't seem to be the use case you're referring to.

JohnDClay ,

Do you use a VPN? I've found that Google has been making me do these much more now that I'm using one.

JohnDClay ,

Videos are the most monetizable way to communicate small amounts of information.

JohnDClay ,

The power train is the most expensive and largest part of an EV. So stuffing it info a vehicle that isn't meant for it is pretty tricky. It's easier if you sacrifice the truck or back seat for batteries, but it's still hard.

JohnDClay ,

Wait till he hears how many revolutions for a cd player! Or if you really want to get him going, a hard drive!

JohnDClay ,

Will it stop asking me to upgrade every month if I have one of these installed? I might need to get one just for that.

JohnDClay ,

Assuming the distribution is the same for both

JohnDClay ,

Yellow is pretty terrible, people don't look very good without eyebrows.

JohnDClay ,

But to a much lesser extent on some things in the modern day.

For example, China suppressing Uyghurs is on a level the US hasn't done since Japanese concentration camps in WWII. And it's been since maybe the US annexing Texas or manefest destiny since they've done covert or overt invasion like Ukraine, Georgia, Hong Kong, or planning with Taiwan.

JohnDClay ,

Yes?

Which do you think applies? The US hasn't added any territory lately that I'm aware of.

JohnDClay ,

Is there one that is part of the US now?

JohnDClay ,

You think reeducation camps to kill a culture are different?

JohnDClay ,

I think the camps for the Uyghurs are.

JohnDClay ,

I found it kinda funny that sokka's literally in love with the moon.

JohnDClay ,

Sounds like this is a tack on to starlink. Could make sense to put low quality cameras on starlink to prevent a-sat shoot downs since there are so many starlink sats. You'd need to do a complete Kessler syndrome leo denial to economically knock them all out.
