Privacy@Lemmy.ml: Why use catch-all email domains over email aliases?

I've been looking at using email aliases services, and right now I'm thinking of using Simplelogin for all my online accounts and accounts where I can change my email easily, and getting my own domain to share with people and where I can't easily update my email. It seems like I shouldn't use my own domain for online services...

Link ,

This depends if you have a website on your domain and it appears on search engines. I do and had to modify Rspamd as bots were spamming addresses like abuse@ and other dictionary words.

Why can’t all cell providers have an agreement where if the user dials 911 or whatever the equivalent is in their country your phone will connect to any network if your provider isn’t currently available and route the call.

Being restricted to only your network when another provider might have a cell tower nearby with full signal is ridiculous in an emergency.

OneDrive automatically backups folders in Windows 11 without users' permissions (windowsreport.com)

According to the latest reports, Windows 11 has made an independent choice by automatically turning on OneDrive folder backup for Desktop, Pictures, Documents, Music, and Video folders without your permission. This signifies that, whether you approve or not, everything is becoming coordinated with the cloud....

Doesn’t really matter if it is easy to turn off. By that point it is already to late all your files have been uploaded to their server.

The reason this release was so fast is because of a critical bug that was locking the database to read only.

Google Pay is officially dead in the US. Just got the email.

We are writing to inform you about changes to your Google Pay experience. As we continue to provide safe and seamless payments to users around the world, we are also simplifying the app experience in the U.S. For years, Google Wallet has been the primary place to securely store payment cards used for tap and pay in stores,...

What alternative is there to Google Wallet?

What’s the benefit of this? Is it two subtitles playing at the same time?

If this is anything like their new Desktop UI, it is going to be awful…

Sliding sync doesn’t make joining Matrix HQ any faster. This is depending on your hardware and whether or not you have any workers configured. For most users it isn’t worth joining that room anyway.

Link ,

It’s the amount of users and servers in the room. When you join it on a new server it needs to process and verify the state of the room and agree it with all the servers. As the state is massive in this room it can take a very long time to join it.

If you want to learn more read this: https://matrix.org/docs/older/stateres-v2/

Link ,

Correct! Although if you are the only user on the server subsequent joins don’t matter.

The music on iTunes is compressed and doesn’t sound as good as a CD does.

Not to mention they can revoke your access to your music on iTunes. No one can take away your CD unless they break into your house!

Link ,

Sure but if you don’t have the song downloaded on your PC and they remove it from your library you can’t redownload it.

Most people aren’t backing up the songs they buy on iTunes.

Congratulations! This is great!

Slightly off topic but how is the Samsung Tizan app submission coming along?

PSA: Docker nukes your firewall rules and replaces them with its own.

I use nftables to set my firewall rules. I typically manually configure the rules myself. Recently, I just happened to dump the ruleset, and, much to my surprise, my config was gone, and it was replaced with an enourmous amount of extremely cryptic firewall rules. After a quick examination of the rules, I found that it was...

Is it? Last time I tried none of my docker compose files would start correctly in podman compose.

Where I live changing the AC is a task they can ask you while on the test.

If you do it dangerously such as swerving or taking your eyes off the road for extended periods then you can fail the test.

Another successful OpenBSD setup

I've been buying these little boxes from AliExpress for years to use as firewalls and routers. My oldest one is almost 9 years old now! OpenBSD installs just fine. Just a BIOS tweak to always boot up after power is restored.

It is a managed switch. What’s wrong with TP-Link managed switches?

I have a basic Netgear managed switch for VLANs.

Link ,

Doesn’t look like it but if I set up VLANs unless an user is on the correct VLAN they can’t access the web interface. And the only way for them to get access is to get physical access and plug a device into the correct port.

Link ,

From the switch? I thought the routing was done at the router level?

Link ,

Or use LetsEncrypt it’s free to get an SSL certificate.

Link ,

Do routers and access points need patching too?

Link ,

Hmm how would one know if their specific AP is affected? Lots of manufacturers won’t release updates.

Link ,

Unfortunately my AP doesn’t support OpenWRT.

Did you read the article? I don’t think temporary usernames will increase spam.

Link ,

Clickbait! If it said “Firefox 123 is out with a new tool for reporting broken websites to Mozilla”, most users would scroll past…

Link ,

Where do you see that? Looks like a torrent client let running to me.

Link ,

I completely agree. There are lots of communities on Reddit that are missing on Lemmy. Have you tried posting your community? It might entice people to participate!

The AI can be added to a robot that can salvage aircraft and motorcycles. It would be far cheaper to employ than a human as well.

Valve? I think they are pretty good and pro consumer.

Does this affect the UK as well as they aren’t in the European Union anymore?

Such as?

You don’t need to run docker-compose down.

docker-compose pull; docker-compose up -d is enough

Link ,

If only one container has been updated then when you run docker compose up -d it will only recreate that container, unless it is a dependency of another container (like a database) in which case it will restart all containers that depend on it as well.

Link ,

It’s really good but I do wish it supported more languages like Russian or Japanese. So far most of the times I have had to translate a page, Firefox didn’t support the language.

Link ,

Would users really go to i2p instead of using a VPN?

Link ,

That’s a bit annoying as it means you can’t 100% the game as there will always be one achievement you can’t get.

Link ,

At this point the only games that don’t work on Linux are games using kernel level anti-cheats, and these are the largest games out there.

If you don’t play any of those games then your game most likely works just fine on Linux.

Link ,

The DRM on Blu-rays has essentially been defeated nowadays even on 4K Ultra HD. With the correct drive and firmware you can rip any Blu-ray. Sure it is a bit harder than DVD but the quality increase far outweigh this.

Link ,

Not sure where you are in Europe but here lots of people use iMessage. If you have an iPhone and want to text another iPhone, it’s usually iMessage.

If they don’t have an iPhone then people fall back to WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or hell even Discord…

Link ,

What stopping someone from recreating this on mastodon or any other website?

There is nothing special about Twitter which allowed people to track this jet.

Apple Vision Pro review: magic, until it’s not (www.theverge.com)

Apple Vision Pro review: magic, until it’s not::There’s a lot of pressure on the new Apple Vision Pro headset, which starts at $3,499 and marks the beginning of something called “spatial computing.” The ambition is enormous, but the Vision Pro also represents a series of really big tradeoffs.

They only have 2 hours of battery life so you can’t really take them out.
