Malfeasant ,

Steering your eyes toward ads, of course, what a silly question.

Malfeasant ,

You sound like my former boss. He once told me "I hate arguing with you, because you usually win." I was too stunned to say anything in response, but of course a minute later it occurred to me I should have said "you could try not being wrong" or something like that...

Malfeasant ,

Looks like we found the AI...

Malfeasant ,

That could at least be somewhat useful... It's more like grabbing some random stranger and asking what their aunt thinks might be on your mum's shopping list.

Malfeasant ,

A lot of people don't seem to understand that google chrome isn't the internet and what exactly a browser is.

It's been that way for a lot longer than chrome has been the big one, it used to be the same with internet explorer...

Malfeasant ,

I had a girlfriend who had a car with popup lights. Never had a problem with them not popping up, the problem was that over the years, the repeated flexing from opening and closing caused the wiring to fall apart. So the lights would perform their secondary function flawlessly, but fail at their primary function.

Malfeasant ,

But that's been that way since the 80s, I know because I was the shitty kid that would turn hood ornaments sideways or backwards as I passed...

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information (futurism.com)

You know how Google's new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won't slide off (pssst...please don't do this.)...

Malfeasant ,

Weight speeds you up downhill more than it slows you down uphill. The trick is to not coast - keep pedaling downhill, use the momentum to get up the next hill.

Malfeasant ,

It's even worse when you have a new-ish car that can handle any size USB stick, but will only load the first 8000 files it sees...

Malfeasant ,

Cars are just catching up to HVAC systems... In the last 3 years I've had to replace both inside and outside fan motors because their (maintenance free) bearings failed.

Malfeasant ,

I'm just relating my experience - when I was younger, I commuted 20 miles round trip every day, and I worked at a bike shop with weenies that were always trying to shave weight off their bikes, so I did whatever I could to add functional weight (so no filling the tubes with lead, that would be cheating) including building up a dually, two rims side by side on a Sachs 3x7 hub. My average speed was higher when commuting (lots of rolling hills, but overall uphill in the morning, downhill going home) than it was on days off, when I was mainly riding around town where it was flat.

And it certainly wasn't because I wanted to go to work...

Malfeasant ,

It's a dumb way to make a profit.

If it works, is it dumb?

When VHS was still around, DVDs were priced higher even though they were much cheaper to produce. If people are willing to pay more, producers/distributors will charge more. Yay capitalism.

Malfeasant ,

Eh, at least feudal Lords offered protection from barbarians...

Malfeasant ,

That's how you get your kids to spend all their time at their friends' houses...

Malfeasant ,

Even if you don't intend to provide it for free, if it's possible to, expect it. No different from Walmart complaining about increased theft after replacing cashiers with self checkout - tiny violins.

Malfeasant ,

Hahahahahahahahaahaha

(I work for a software company.)

Court Bans Use of 'AI-Enhanced' Video Evidence Because That's Not How AI Works (gizmodo.com)

A judge in Washington state has blocked video evidence that’s been “AI-enhanced” from being submitted in a triple murder trial. And that’s a good thing, given the fact that too many people seem to think applying an AI filter can give them access to secret visual data.

Malfeasant ,

computers can't do anything truly random.

Technically incorrect - computers can be supplied with sources of entropy, so while it's true that they will produce the same output given identical inputs, it is in practice quite possible to ensure that they do not receive identical inputs if you don't want them to.

Malfeasant ,

People also used to smoke in offices. Safe and professional is a relatively new thing.

Malfeasant ,

If we read articles, we'd have so little left to argue about...

Malfeasant ,

So does that mean my son is not? (He was a C-section)

Malfeasant ,

It's like riding a motorcycle. Most people are reasonably careful, look before they change lanes, keep a decent following distance so they can react in time, aren't looking at their phone, etc. But even when it's a small minority of drivers that aren't paying attention, you still have to treat everyone as potentially one of those, because one of those can fucking end you, and you can't tell the difference until it's too late.

Malfeasant ,

There's dozens of us! Actually I couldn't scrounge together enough floppies, but eventually somehow came across a CD-ROM, probably from someone at school... And I was a bit later, more like '96 maybe...

Water analogy works better with plumbing. A river, not so much. But people aren't that much better at understanding plumbing, unfortunately...

    Malfeasant ,

The first rule of tautology club is the first rule of tautology club.

    Malfeasant ,

    AC is like tides...

    Malfeasant ,

Since liquid water can't be compressed

Common misconception - it can, just not very much, so the volume change is tiny, and in practice, there's usually something else in the system that is changing volume by a larger amount- like air bubbles, or if there's anything elastic in the plumbing, it will stretch - but regardless, water absolutely can be under pressure.

resistance only reduces current, but when I think of hair in a pipe, the pressure after the obstruction would also be lower

You are correct, in electronics, resistance drops voltage (assuming the load is in series with the resistance). In fact, a cheap quick and dirty digital to analog converter uses a bunch of resistors to supply different voltages...

    Malfeasant ,

These also have inefficiencies which would reduce the runtime on the battery.

Not wrong, but the efficiency of inverters is really high, loss is just about negligible.

    Malfeasant ,

That has as much to do with installing the os yourself vs buying a machine with the os preinstalled... I've had plenty of machines where some part or other doesn't work well or at all because they need drivers that aren't available for whatever reason...

    Malfeasant ,

I can make Bluetooth work under Linux, but not windows server 2016...

    Malfeasant ,

Getting bent over and fucked from behind isn't exclusive to homosexual men... And regardless, nobody is saying that's bad, if you're into it, go crazy. Most people get the hint that the picture represents unwanted sex, which I hope we can agree is bad regardless of your orientation.

    Malfeasant ,

My mom was making an effort to understand Ubuntu just before she died...

    Malfeasant ,

I'm not somewhere where I can watch a video, how does a router have a display at all? Is it streaming to a web page?

    Malfeasant ,

Normal Windows updates don't take an hour

Correct. But who can tell the difference beforehand between a normal update and an abnormal one? The problem is Windows tends to hide those details. I've sat on support calls where a server needs to be rebooted for some configuration change, and Windows insists on applying updates because hey, you're rebooting anyway, so what if it takes 1/2 hour to do this thing that should take 5 minutes...

"A dream. It's perfect": Helium discovery in northern Minnesota may be biggest ever in North America (www.cbsnews.com)

"A dream. It's perfect": Helium discovery in northern Minnesota may be biggest ever in North America::For a century, the U.S. Government-owned the largest helium reserve in the country, but the biggest exporters now are in Russia, Qatar and Tanzania. With this new discovery, Minnesota could be joining that list.

    Malfeasant ,

Helium in balloons is returning to the atmosphere. We can re harvest it if we want

No. It wafts away into space. All the helium we find is a product of radioactive decay- alpha particles- which gets trapped underground. Once it's released into the atmosphere, it is effectively gone.

    Malfeasant ,

The problem is those passive adapters only work because one side switches to the other's protocol.

    Malfeasant ,

That percentage is non zero. The percentage of Waze executives going to prison for it is zero.

    Malfeasant ,

This is why I have no qualms about piracy. The workers get shafted either way.

    Malfeasant ,

I use Arch because not only am I into self abuse, I also enjoy being publicly flogged whenever I ask for help, which is never, because anytime I have a problem with it, there's a pretty good chance someone else has asked before me.
