Ironically, if Google were upfront about how it would handle the shutdown, it likely would have increased consumer confidence enough that Stadia may not have needed to be shutdown.

Everyone already anticipates new Google services to fail. Expecting people to spend hundreds of dollars on content that is locked to a service run by a company that is known for canceling services after a couple of years was always going to fail.

Stadia was essentially just a demo of Google’s cloud capabilities. Even if Stadia was a massive success, it would still be a drop in the bucket compared to Google’s ad revenue and have no impact on stock price.

Proton will still be a for-profit company that will be majority-controlled by a non-profit. The non-profit will not own all of the business either, so there will still be profits going to shareholders.

If checking their email a couple of times per year is too high a requirement, I would not recommend the time and effort necessary to maintain a mail server. Even people who enjoy self-hosting often do not want to host a mail server.

Signal still requires a phone number to use it. What they recently added is the ability to message people without needing to know their phone number.

I use Radicale for my calendars, reminders, and contacts precisely because of how minimal it is. It has been very reliable for me and is very easy to back up and restore since it is just files.

What email provider do you use for sign ups?

I used to use Protonmail, however the verification steps become tedious when creating unique emails for sign ups. I've switched to Tutanota despite it contravening their one account policy. What do you all use for one off emails (for sign ups etc )? Or do you prefer one of those 10 minute email sites?

Telegram still requires a phone number to sign up, but they have had usernames that can be used to contact people without needing their phone number. Signal is only now finally rolling out usernames.

Which privacy services would you donate to?

Due to financial problems, throughout my privacy journey I have only used free tools to enhance my privacy. I was recently thinking about the question: If I had the money to give back to the services I've used, which ones would I donate to? Here is my personal list, which is still a WIP:...

Plus donations to Mozilla cannot even be used for Firefox development due to the structure of the foundation and corporation.

If you are using Linux, it does not get any simpler than Gnome Boxes. If you need more options, virt-manager is still fairly easy to use.

No, KDE does not have their own virtualization gui. Boxes can still be used on KDE as well though. If you really want nothing to do with Gnome, then virt-manager will be your best option.

I use Downpour for Audiobooks. It is similar to Audible where audiobooks can be purchased individually, or there is a subscription that provides credits to purchase audiobooks. The audiobooks are drm-free and can be downloaded. I have not found a way to automate the download and transfer to my Audiobookshelf server, but I don’t mind doing it manually considering I average around two or three audiobooks a month.
