Avast fined $16.5 million for ‘privacy’ software that actually sold users’ browsing data (www.theverge.com)

Avast, the cybersecurity software company, is facing a $16.5 million fine after it was caught storing and selling customer information without their consent. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced the fine on Thursday and said that it’s banning Avast from selling user data for advertising purposes.

I'm all for crapping on large publicly traded companies but lumping Google in with companies that sell your data isn't honest. Google does not and never has sold user data. They sure as hell use your data for their own ad network but they do not sell that data wholesale. Meta and other data brokers sell your data and this Avast company sells your data through a product they claimed stopped tracking. I'm not pro-Google but to compare their business model (which is very transparent about how it handles your data and how it's never sold) to Avast's business model (which is to completely lie to the end user while literally selling everything that user does) is not an honest comparison.

True that, but it does bring down the number of those damned to hell. So long as the police are able to shoot the sinner before the body hits the ground it's not suicide. I guess they're just trying to do the Lord's work and that callous hailstorm of bullets are just his hand.

I'm split on this concept. Assuming we can't get away from tracking I would prefer a company like Google over a company like Meta. Google doesn't sell your data, they just serve ads based on what data they have. Meta and other data brokers will sell your data to whoever ponies up the cash. I'm not happy about being tracked either way. I just recognize one system is considerably worse than the other. Also, if (and this is a big if) Google honors your request to delete your data then I believe it would be even less of a concern. Right now I have my Google data set to auto delete after three months. Ideally that would be enough data to help with traffic suggestions etc while serving up relevant ads but not enough to build an invasive profile.
Realisticly we need more laws outlining how our data can be used and ensuring that it's not retained in ANY form after a set period of time or when it's deletion is requested.

Apple pitched the Vision Pro as if VR hadn't wasn't already a thing that's been around for a while. While the VP has some higher specs particularly in its display it lacks in areas like field of view, comfort, game selection and portability. The first group of people that would be interested are those who already own or have used other VR systems. They those people won't see the VP as such a jump. Especially considering it's locked to the Apples app store with not many VR options. The second group is composed of people who have been out of the loop and think this is the begining of VR. I think thats the camp more likely to return the unit once they realize it's just a novelty in its current state.

Why won't anyone make a privacy focused premium streaming box with no ads? I'd pay so much for this thing that will never exist.

Is there any way to repurpose an old android phone into an android TV? Sometimes like Linage OS but TV focused. Even older Android phones can be considerably more powerful than any current streaming box. Add on privacy and you've got the perfect solution. It also would save on e-waste.

My argument to that would be if we are only a niche segment then where is the serious economic harm they are referring to? It sounds to me like API calls are happening either way but they don't want to lose out on the ad and customer tracking revenue. Also, I as other have pointed out there is no reason it needs a remote cloud to change the thermostat.

This article seems like Apple had to sign off on it before it was published. Having multiple stores from which to choose will certainly lead to lower prices. The best example of this is gaming. Closed systems of digital purchases like Xbox or Nintendo Switch stores almost always have higher prices than the exact same game on PC. Of course on PC I can buy from the ubiquitous Steam, the Microsoft store, Epic, GOG, UBI, EA, itch.io and others. If PC were like an iPhone I would only be able to buy from Microsoft and MS could demand a cut of every game sold outside of their walled garden.

The fact this writer claims developers would be nothing without Apple is laughable. If Apple closed up shop tomorrow we'd still want and use apps. Apple is not the reason we use apps, they are only a platform that can run the apps we already use.

Apple is not a mom and pop shop so when they control so much of our means to connect they damn sure should be scrutinized. You may not agree with that sentiment but a growing number of people who understand the issues sure do. This includes a growing number of regulators from around the world. Japan, the European Union and the United States are all in various stages of addressing this issue. Despite your bravado you don't have the moral or intellectual high ground here.

To be fair, you're the one crying and twisting yourself around to defend the worlds biggest company here. What's really funny is when you talk about "the rules" when I just outlined how international law is about to change the rules. It appears it's you who isn't happy with the rules and therefore you who is the massive hypocrite. You don't like it? Well too bad. Start your own country then you lazy cry baby. 😉

I would also add that you shouldn't be using a basic calculator to solve multi part problems. Second, I haven't seen a division sign used in a formal math class since elementary and possibly junior high. These things are almost always written as fractions which makes the logic easier to follow. The entire point of working in convention is so that results are reproducible. The real problem though is that these are not written to educate anyone. They are deliberately written to confuse so that some social media personality can make money from clicks. If someone really wants to practice math skip the click and head over to the Kahn Academy or something similar.

I saw an earlier post that showed Lemmy's recent rapid growth followed by a plateau and then slight decline. My feeling is that there is a very LOUD minority of Lemmy users that are trying to act as self-anointed gatekeepers and they're bringing the platform down as a direct consequence. It makes the platform look petty and small to new and existing users alike. If the top posts are continually about shaming other users then this platform isn't going to last. Let's focus on building communities and having interesting conversations rather than one upping each other.
