If by Opera you mean as it was back in version 12 before it got sold to some chinese company and completely changed, then yes. Nothing to do with what opera is now.

Murdoc ,

It is source-available though, so that's a plus.

Murdoc ,

Huh, hadn't seen that bit before, thanks for that. Ok, well that is disappointing. I did notice this bit in there too though:

What about security benefits?
Even though most of the security-relevant code for Vivaldi browser is in Chromium, there is also some security-relevant code in the UI. If you think that specific security-relevant parts of the UI should be open-sourced to make Vivaldi more trustworthy, let us know, and we’ll consider putting it out as part of our code bundles, so you can check it for yourselves.

It not much consolation, but it's better than nothing. As it stands though, FF still has too many problems for me. I'll have to see how this ad blocking thing shakes out though, might have to revisit my decision then.

BALWAR - Thus Sunday at the convention center!

Murdoc ,

But yeah, that is the central hub that everything goes thru

Does vpn help with this?

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information (futurism.com)

You know how Google's new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won't slide off (pssst...please don't do this.)...

Murdoc ,

And therein lies the difference between engineers and business people. And look which ones are usually in charge.

Murdoc ,

I'm using Vivaldi (Android), and it looks like I'm not getting the mobile site, but the desktop one. I can access all the content, but the pictures are way too big, and the white cloud in the background makes it impossible to read the text over it because it is white too. If I set Vivaldi to "desktop site" mode, I get the same thing, only without the text word-wrapped. I just want to know if this is malicious or just incompetent.

Murdoc ,

But you can access the content without going to their site, with places like Invidious, and apps like NewPipe and Tubular.

Murdoc ,

Ah yes, tvs. I don't watch enough yt to want to watch it on tv, so I often forget about that. You're right, no easy answers there right now. Certainly there are ways, but all sacrifice some convenience. Hopefully this will change soon.

Murdoc ,

Didn't know about this feature, thanks!

Murdoc ,

First time in a long time I’ve seen "literally" used right. Have an upvote.

Murdoc ,

That just reminded me of something I tried that was similar, I think it was called Visual Chat? It looked like a 2D cartoon, but each person controlled an avatar and could move around and talk to each other, go to other rooms, change expression, gesture, etc.

Microsoft bought whatever that was and completely ruined it, just like they ruin everything else they buy.

It's like the Midas touch: they make it shiny, expensive, and of little use.

Murdoc ,

Yes, that's the one! Boy, it's been a long time.

Murdoc ,

Note 10+ here and same, as soon as I can afford one of those linux phones, or at least a second-hand pixel.

Murdoc ,

This looks like an interesting project. Thanks!

Murdoc ,

I only found out about it just less than a year ago. :(

Murdoc ,

At one time I remember people commonly referring to the case as the hard drive.

Murdoc ,

Also the Genuine People Personality™ from the Hitchhiker's Guide.

Murdoc , (edited )

Saw that in a sci-fi rpg called Living Steel. An alien bioweapon unleashed on a human space colony called VISR, or Viral Induced Sociopathic Response. It was interesting.
Edit: spelling

Murdoc ,

Ooh, can we start the SCSI thing again?

Murdoc ,

This feels a bit like the debate over whether a virus is "alive" or not. "But the virus/HTML has DNA/code." "But it requires another cell/web browser in order to replicate/execute." etc. 😄

Murdoc ,

"A couple of trees..."

And a body of water, and a road, possibly some mountains... (smh)

Murdoc ,

I'm trying to get stremio working, but it just gives me an error on startup and their support won't get back to me about it.

Murdoc ,

Linux pc (opensuse). They claim it should work but maybe I'm outta luck.

Murdoc ,

Or the classic: who | grep -i blonde | date; cd ~; unzip; touch; strip; finger; mount; gasp; yes; uptime; umount; sleep

Murdoc ,

Not mine, it's an oldie. 🙂

Murdoc ,

Close, I had an 8210, my very first cell phone. Loved that little guy.

Murdoc ,

If they were fake ads like in GTA and Cyberpunk, it could be fun, provided you could turn them on and off anytime.

Murdoc ,

I think that it's one of the benefits of monopoly. People don't think "I wonder if I should start checking out alternatives?" but instead "Damn, that's annoying. I wonder if there's a way to fix this?" Alternatives never even enter their head. See, there's already a tool for the problem in the post!

All the ways streaming services are aggravating their subscribers this week (arstechnica.com)

Below is a look at the most exasperating news from streaming services from this week. The scale of this article demonstrates how fast and frequently disappointing streaming news arises. Coincidentally, as we wrote this article, another price hike was announced....

It’s not evil capitalists. It’s people acting rationally. The incentive structure leads to this behaviour.

IOW, don't hate the player, hate the game.

Catholic^TM^ brand Holy Baptizer 2000 brought to you by BRAWNDO! (The Thirst Mutilator!)

Murdoc ,

Title: I know, it's in the definition of them.

Description: Doesn't make me want to watch the video and frankly comes off as click-bait.

This could be done better.

Murdoc ,

Ah yes, that would make me want to watch now. Thank you and well said.

Murdoc ,

Looks great, and I'm all for it.

On a mostly unrelated note, reading the name made me think of a line from the movie Young Frankenstein: "Sedagive!?!"

Murdoc ,

😆 Good description of how ads appear to me.

Tech brands are forcing AI into your gadgets—whether you asked for it or not (arstechnica.com)

Earlier this year, Microsoft added a new key to Windows keyboards for the first time since 1994. Before the news dropped, your mind might’ve raced with the possibilities and potential usefulness of a new addition. However, the button ended up being a Copilot launcher button that doesn’t even work in an innovative way....

Murdoc ,

For some reason this made me imagine a game that is a cross between minecraft and super mario, where whenever you mine or hit a certain kind of block, a little coin pops up and you get a bitcoin from it. Real bitcoin mining!

Murdoc ,

Ever play Deus Ex: Invisible War? Yeah, they did that in there. A ubiquitous series of holoprojectors allowing you to seemingly interact with a particular pop star, who is super friendly and easily form a relationship with, turns out to be a sophisticated ai surveillance network doing exactly what you said. It even screws you over if you reveal too much to it.

Murdoc ,

And you could roast marshmallows in bed!
