What’s the alternative? Communism? State ownership of the means of production? Those are worse.

MxM111 ,

Did not say crony. And yes, there are alternatives like feudalism, you think they worth mentioning? And I specifically mentioned state ownership too, so, you can count socialism (as economic system there too).

MxM111 ,

In any place where state ownership of means of manufacturing was implemented it lead to dictatorship or dictatorship like state. So, one can see how one can confuse them. But no, I do not confuse them, for one is economic system, and another is political.

So, let me ask, in that model that you describe, who owns the means of manufacturing? State or not?

MxM111 ,

“Workers” is too abstract. Which workers? How is it handled? How do you start new business? Who/how it is paid? Who gets the profit? In what proportions? The natural solution is to have state ownership and saying “the state is the people”, but this is exactly what was done in, say USSR. And it does not work well.

MxM111 ,

So Unions under capitalism?

MxM111 ,

So, we have it now, then? Or are you advocating for forced Unionization?

MxM111 ,

I think people always were this lazy, but they were more considered to others.

MxM111 ,

Are you arguing that the monarchs were lazier?

MxM111 ,

From Wiki:

JPEG XL supports lossy compression and lossless compression of ultra-high-resolution images (up to 1 terapixel), up to 32 bits per component, up to 4099 components (including alpha transparency), animated images, and embedded previews.

Why 4099 components? Why so many? And why 4099 in particular? 4096+3 with 3 being RGB?

On a side note, 1 Terapixel is just crazy. A square with 1 million pixels has this number of pixels. So, about 1000 of 1080p will fit into this square vertically and about 500 horizontally. How has such eyes to see this all pixel perfectly?

MxM111 ,

That would be SCI: Miami show zoom, where they can identify a yawning killer by his teeth fillings which image was reflected in the window which image was reflected in the eye of a random person far in the background of a shot.

There is equity, and there is equality, and those are different things. I do think that forceful push to maintain percentages in various aspects of life to correspond to percentages of population often is actually unjust. For example, to insist that it should be strictly 50/50 percentage (or whatever it is) between men and women in all professions e.g. police, school teachers, etc. and actually stop hiring a particular gender until this 50/50 distribution is established is not good.

MxM111 ,

The problem with this graphics is that this is absolutely not what equity proponents are doing. What is shown here is individual approach. What equity supporters want to do is to group you according by things like skin color or gender, and provide support according that grouping.

For example, equality in income distribution is when help is given based on income of the individual. Equity is when help is given based on skin color to make average income of all skin colors the same.

Starlink's Laser System is Beaming 42 Petabytes of Data Per Day (www.pcmag.com)

SpaceX's laser system for Starlink is delivering over 42 petabytes of data for customers per day, an engineer revealed today. That translates into 42 million gigabytes. Each of the 9,000 lasers in the network is capable of transmitting at 100Gbps, and satellites can form ad-hoc mesh networks to complete long-haul transmissions...

MxM111 ,

For comparison, an average trans Atlantic submarine cable is about 0.1 petabit PER SECOND. And there are many cables…

MxM111 ,

Please keep in mind that it is an average cable, that exists today, the new ones are faster. This is also under sea, where the traffic is smaller than on continent. Also, this is just one cable as opposed to the whole network. Overall, the starlink traffic is tiny.

MxM111 ,

You running in forests, hunting for food with bare hands, fighting with bears for survival?

MxM111 ,

Of course, for business “do better for low prices” is usually translated “work longer for longer for lower salary”.

MxM111 ,

Not clear what would happen with in-app purchases.

MxM111 ,

When such acquisitions are happening all what happens is that the stock/shares of one company (Activision/Blizzard in this example) is replaced by the stock/shares of another company (MS in this example) and the purchasing price is simply another way of discussing the stock exchange ratio. Company can have zero money to do that.

MxM111 ,

It is called symbiosis, where both sides profit.

MxM111 ,

How profitable for both sides business relationships are detrimental to economic ecosystem?

MxM111 ,

Are you talking about broker taking commission when buying and selling stock? They provide service of buying/selling and the commission is the service fee. Why is it not their labor?

MxM111 ,

Moving numbers or information representing anything or nothing is a service processed to the one who purchased the service - to the person or institution that wants to buy or sell stock. Why is it not labour? Do you not count sales person actions in a store as labour?

MxM111 ,

True. They are instead can be patented.

MxM111 ,

Ok, I spent way too much time trying to understand what a hell “deef meat” is. Please tell me I am not along. I need it for my self-esteem.

MxM111 ,

Apples laptops and phones are great in terms of hardware. Moreover software and ecosystem is fine tuned to that hardware (and vice verse). I understand if you do not like closeness of the system, but let’s not pretend that hardware is “meh”. It is very competitive in the same price bracket. I actually did an exercise few years ago - tried to find one to one spec windows vs MacBook Pro (this is where Marvin is, right)? Tough luck, windows machines were more expensive!

MxM111 ,

Clippy v.2.

MxM111 ,

It is not just RAM. They also require special hardware/chip to run ANN

MxM111 ,

What’s Reddit, you mean?

MxM111 ,

Give man a fish and they call you a communist. Create a baby crashing machine and they call you shrewd businessman. Or something like this.

MxM111 ,

I would rather people were pro-creation-of-something, rather than destroy something that works, even if poorly, without really suggesting the alternative.

MxM111 ,

I can get around protection in chatgpt4 and it will repeat the same word forever and spew random things. The protection is not working the way you described.

MxM111 ,

I do not understand the meme. Do you mean complaining about absent system requirements?

This new data poisoning tool lets artists fight back against generative AI (www.technologyreview.com)

A new tool lets artists add invisible changes to the pixels in their art before they upload it online so that if it’s scraped into an AI training set, it can cause the resulting model to break in chaotic and unpredictable ways....

MxM111 ,

Obviously, with so many different AIs, this can not be a factor (a bug).

If you have no problem looking at the image, then AI would not either. After all both you and AI are neural networks.

MxM111 ,

It was reasonable at the time to separate celebration of labor from Haymarket massacre, where an anarchist through a bomb into otherwise peaceful labor rally killing both the police and the civilian with many workers being injured and triggering the riot. The labor leaders in US then decided to make labor day to be not associated with these bloody events, which have little relationship with the labor movement itself. Not sure why you refer here to ACAB, the policemen were victims here.

MxM111 ,

Cops are always a bunch of authoritarian pieces of shit who can’t stand being criticized for being the violent fucking thugs they are.

Such blanket statements about all the cops is intellectual dishonesty at best. While there are shitty people working in all professions, and having some police officers shitty means very bad things can happen, the majority of the force is not that, as I am sure you aware. Yes, structural changes are needed, but this is not the same as calling all of them as bunch of authoritarian pieces of shit. There is crime in this country, and police does have its function and is needed by society.
