PeterPoopshit ,

The soil where I live is only good enough for 5.25in floppy plants to grow.

PeterPoopshit ,

Imagine hosting an event so lame that it makes international news solely because of how incredibly lame it was. Just damn.

PeterPoopshit ,

You can pirate media that uses that new blu ray drm by plugging a capture card into the overpriced compatible DVD player and recording the video. Also, it's a way to transfer saved content from a dvr as their hard drives are always encrypted (do those still exist). The video stream on all this stuff is encrypted with hdcp to prevent this but there exist hdcp strippers. It seems to still be possible to buy them even on Amazon. Stock up before they get banned. Frankly I'm surprised they aren't banned already.

PeterPoopshit ,

I hope they actually end up calling it the Very Big Disc (tm)

PeterPoopshit ,

Oh shit now Elon is going to try to buy all of Linux.

PeterPoopshit ,

Huh, I thought you were supposed to use -sri. I hate dealing with the AUR, that stuff doesn't work half the time. I'm sure there are reasons for making it annoying like that but I haven't really put much thought into it before. I'd like to think making the AUR a pain in the ass makes things less likely to break, and hopefully that's not just because you're less likely to install AUR packages.

PeterPoopshit ,

Best I can do is make an elf that mostly works and the memory manager seems pretty solid but the second you start doing stuff with strings, it fucks all up and I never figured out that bug after months so it is what it is. If you want to print a string you have to drop into real mode first.

PeterPoopshit ,

They definitely won't be selling any of that to scammers /s

PeterPoopshit ,

Because zoneminder sucks and the other ones are kind of corporate and crappy?

PeterPoopshit ,

When it fucks up, good luck fixing it without an os reinstall. That's the price. If it was easier/possible to restore to a fully working state after it gets borked, it would be really good.

Microsoft says it caught hackers from China, Russia and Iran using its AI tools (www.reuters.com)

Microsoft says it caught hackers from China, Russia and Iran using its AI tools::State-backed hackers from Russia, China, and Iran have been using tools from Microsoft-backed OpenAI to hone their skills and trick their targets, according to a report published on Wednesday.

PeterPoopshit ,

They must not be very good hackers if they have to use a third party service instead of making their own local ai and using it for their shenanigans 🤷

PeterPoopshit ,

They already replaced the default start menu with a bullshittier one.

PeterPoopshit ,

How the fuck can they not compete with 5G? Is using the advantages of their wired infrastructure to just provide customers with the same service as always but without the bandwidth caps, effectively overcoming the 1 major disadvantage of mobile internet, really that hard?

PeterPoopshit ,

I can see the headlines now. "GOP passes bill banning civilian ownership of anything faster than a Pentium III."

PeterPoopshit ,

That's precisely 12.4 gazillion dollars. Over 3x the value of the entire milky way galaxy.

Scientists develop game-changing 'glass brick' that could revolutionize construction: 'The highest insulating performance'::The team of scientists developed an aerogel glass brick, which is a translucent and thermally insulating material.

PeterPoopshit ,

So if you could theoretically let out a big enough fart, it would be visible on Google Maps.

PeterPoopshit ,

Wow wtf my comment didn't go to the post I intended. Huh.

PeterPoopshit ,

Welp, using the internet was fun while it lasted. I'll still use Firefox for all my browsing until I can't anymore and after that I guess I'll go fuck myself for entertainment instead of internet browsing.

PeterPoopshit , (edited )

This. Fucking this. Wobbling windows were around in the early days of Ubuntu's existence which was a long ass time ago and it was probably possible to get them even before that. Surely they've figured out a good way to make them work without fucking up your entire system by now.

Edit: oh, turns out KDE already has that option on my system.

Edit 2: Shit. How do you unfuck KDE? Asking for a friend.

I finally upgraded from a 3rd gen i7 to a 6th gen i7. There was no actual performance difference besides my gpu vram getting hotter, I just did it because the motherboard wasn't as shit. I'm sure the difference between a 6th gen i7 and an 8th gen i7 is equally unnoticeable. I didn't want to ever boot Windows again anyway.

Edit: huh, I'm intrigued by the downvotes. Is it because I used the wording "no actual performance difference" rather than providing benchmarks and proof? Is it because computer technology isn't improving at the rate it used to and people are in denial and/or easily triggered about it? Or maybe because I'm "probably a troll" based on my username?

PeterPoopshit ,

Sometimes I say [brand name] over and over just to see if my phone serves me relevant ads or spam emails afterwards. If it doesnt give me [brand name] ads, that means my privacy module settings are tuned correctly. Sometimes if I receive a remotely "relevant" spam email, I get suspicious of whatever thing I most recently downloaded.

It may be a futile endeavor to make it so that no one can steal to my information but I'll make damn sure acquiring my information is too expensive to be profitable. Make them hire better/actual hackers instead of using an automatic script.

There probably will someday be a push to prevent common normal people from having access to computer systems that offer the user root or superuser access. "ThE aVeRaGe PeRsOn DoEsNt NeEd AdMiN pErMiSsIoNs" or "think of the children". Ipads and surface pros will be allowed but something like a socket 1155 motherboard won't.

PeterPoopshit ,

When the government starts taking away unlocked bootloader phones, I will be switching to ham radio instead of getting a locked down phone. Fuck the system.

Eh, updates still break things on Debian just like on Arch. It may happen less often but when you do run into problems, you're completely screwed. I updated to Debian 12 like a year ago and still haven't fixed all the issues because it's a server and reinstalling the entire OS is completely out of the question and a beyond reasonable amount of work. On Arch, stuff breaks more often but the saving grace is that everything breaks often enough that you can count on there being an up to date wiki page for whatever problems you run into. On Debian if something semi obscure breaks, that feature is gone for good if you hate format and reinstalls.

Tbf, I did eventually get everything except zoneminder (and the ability to automatically reconnect to wifi when it loses connection WITHOUT HUMAN INTERVENTION) working again on my Debian server but the fact is it 100% worked before the update.

PeterPoopshit ,

Hmm there doesn't seem to be a section for "how do I prevent zoneminder from getting fucked and when I spend a month fucking with source code, databases, permissions, config files and everything else I can possibly think of, I can finally get it to work except the android app can't playback events but it works through browser and no one on the forums knows shit" but thanks.

PeterPoopshit ,

Definitely not the IT people keeping their ai servers running, that's for sure.

PeterPoopshit ,

Romance is fucking dead and wokeness killed it

The tech world is going downhill fast. Anything that isn't currently obtainable through only foss means isn't going to be attainable by the average person for much longer.

The tech things most people currently enjoy will soon become entirely unaffordable to anyone not made of money. Anything that you aren't willing to switch to an open source alternative for, prepare to learn to live without it.

I even self host my own music streaming. I never had a streaming service, not even in 2012 when Netflix was all the rage. I don't even own a windows compatible pc. I don't even know what modern ms office looks like. I use my home network more than I use the actual internet just about.

PeterPoopshit ,

Security camera stuff is really lacking. The only good one is zoneminder. It mostly works but it breaks a lot.

PeterPoopshit ,

That's probably why they named the Xbox One the Xbox One all those years ago. Whenever people googled how to mod an Xbox One to play pirated games, they would keep finding original Xbox crap instead since everyone up until that point called it "Xbox 1".

PeterPoopshit ,

I gave up on paying attention to Xboxes when they started calling them such stupid fucking shit like "Xbox x series sx". Now you have to be really familiar with Xbox lore to even figure out what the latest current one is.

PeterPoopshit ,

Holy shit you might be onto something big.

PeterPoopshit ,

lol my reasonably good gaming pc doesn't even meet the minimum system requirements. I don't have anything with a cpu that's in the "list of approved CPUs" 😎. Guess I can't use Windows even if I wanted to. 🤷

PeterPoopshit ,

I like vlc because I'm sexually aroused by traffic cones.

PeterPoopshit ,

Damn maybe that one crackhead that kidnapped a scientist to make a dog live forever was onto something.

PeterPoopshit ,

Just because I use Arch doesn't mean I can't get laid. I mean.. I can't get laid. But not because I use Arch.

What if you do it with weed though? Drug tests for stuff like cocaine and meth aren't very reliable but testing positive for nonpsychoactive thc metabolites on every drug test for the next 4 months because you had to smoke a joint to "fit in" is going to have a good chance at threatening any government employee's career. They normally let people go over that in a heartbeat no matter how valuable they are. I'm having a hard time believing that there would ever be any situation where the feds wouldn't fire one of their own people over thc. Company policy usually trumps all other reasoning. Under the federal drug free workplace policy if you test positive you get fired. That's the rule.

Having problems with games sometimes is better than having less problems with games at the cost of your system being bloated, slow and designed in such a way that when it breaks you can't do anything about it besides sfc /scannow and when that doesn't work as usual, a complete os reinstall. Linux saves me time but that's only because it's possible to have the skill to fix all the random issues you run into, unlike with Windows.

PeterPoopshit ,

Pretty soon you won't be allowed to use a tv to watch stuff that isn't state approved media from a state approved source. I had an airbnb once that was set up in such a way that you could sign in to any streaming service you wanted but hdmi was blocked. I doubt the owner intentionally did that but it's scary to actually see this type of shit firsthand.

PeterPoopshit ,

I just use systemctl because I know how to use it and know all the ins and outs of any bullshit I might encounter. No way I'm switching. I like not being stumped on issues I can't fix for weeks.

PeterPoopshit ,

Some people have KDE problems because they use Nvidia. I have KDE problems because I switched from Nvidia to amd but there's no way to uninstall Nvidia drivers in arch without a os reinstall and I'm too lazy for that (games still work, but many of my KDE bugs are probably caused by Nvidia drivers still being present). We are not the same.
