Rentlar ,

Yes! Your efforts are better spent making Lemmy a nicer place.

Rentlar ,

Woohoo! Always great to read a success story!

Linus Tech Tips (LTT) release investigation results on former accusations (x.com)

There were a series of accusations about our company last August from a former employee. Immediately following these accusations, LMG hired Roper Greyell - a large Vancouver-based law firm specializing in labor and employment law, to conduct a third-party investigation. Their website describes them as “one of the largest...

Rentlar ,

I think part of it was the stress of the grindset that Linus running the show was getting all the staff into. Pushing out content at a regular schedule, getting sponsorships and all of that.

The whole GN saga with data accuracy and the donated cooler that made LMG look inward for a bit and improve their process was for the best I think.

The investigation to me is just one element making sure LMG weren't getting off on the wrong foot.

I think the complainant wasn't wrong or defamatory at all to bring up concerns because even in LTT's channel there was a video where the front and center stars of the team comment on how stressful things can be. When there's an implicit hierarchy imbalance (Linus can say "we're all equals here" all he wants) but fact is there's a leadership structure in one way or another, which can cause one to take certain treatment in different ways.

Rentlar ,

Lol you forgot, eating straight from the pan and just washing the pan.

Or just ordering delivery every night

Rentlar ,

Speculation here, I wonder if the ditch lights and general light placement that is different than a normal car confused the self driving module into thinking it's on the wrong side of the road...?

Rentlar ,

Hmm yeah it seems the oncoming movement from the side may throw it off somehow.

One of the many forseeable problems with solely relying on cameras and visual processing.

Rentlar ,

trains as a long string of semi-trucks

So many long distance delivery trucks take the same route across the country. Why don't we just string them all together, then have one big-ass truck engine in the front pulling it all? And to save on how big the motor needs to be, we'll have steel on steel contact to reduce friction. Whoops, you've got a train all of a sudden. 😅

flashing red lights treated like a stop sign

Seems kind of dangerous to treat as a rule. Not just at railroad crossing but a stopped car with hazards on or a firetruck might confuse the self driving module...

I've never heard of CSC, only Coinamatic in every commercially run residential coin laundry I have seen (in Canada). They run on coins or chip cards.

Visa Adds New Way To Share Customer Shopping Data With Retailers (www.businesswire.com)

Visa is rolling out new technology that will allow the payments giant to share more information about customers' preferences [non-paywalled source] based on their shopping history with retailers as it seeks to remain a top player in the competitive e-commerce space. From a report:...

beloved features — like the ability to “gild” posts by donating a Reddit Premium subscription — are not returning.

That was like more than half the point of gold. Some random comment getting lots of gold would mean the recipient, in turn, could give out gold too.

Using a paper cutter, aligning the worn pages along the outside edge of the book into a nice looking rectangle

Rentlar ,

It could have been £300 and you will still complain and be the sucker for paying for that. Is the seller obligated to ship to you at a price of £2?

You could probably shop around a bunch of Oxfams to (maybe) get the book you wanted for cheap. Or you could also find discounted books at the Oxfam and list them for just £1 or 2 above the sticker price. Is that worth your time?

Like I get being upset at institutional practices like soft drinks costing companies a handful of pence per item when they charge £2.50 (or £4.50 at the cinema), and being stingy on the refills. Books on the other hand are a luxury item that (other than the textbook racket by publishers) you can go without.

🤗 (Hugging face) also hosts a large repository including demos of AI models so they have been a helpful resource for open source computing.

Connected cars’ illegal data collection and use now on FTC’s “radar” (arstechnica.com)

The Federal Trade Commission's Office of Technology has issued a warning to automakers that sell connected cars. Companies that offer such products "do not have the free license to monetize people’s information beyond purposes needed to provide their requested product or service," it wrote in a blog post on Tuesday. Just...

And for a low price of a billion dollars, the potential for the executive branch to capitulate to the oligopolies!

Rentlar ,

Dude. This ain't a meme. It was passable as a shitpost.

Rentlar ,

Disclaimer I don't know the ins and outs of HA nor have I used it.

I'm not sure if you have the automatic lock/unlock part figured out but that's the part I can't help with.

In terms of detecting when kid comes home, some ideas:

A low power esp32 board coded to connect to your home network, then if the device name or MAC address is discovered on the network, or have the device send a message every 10 seconds or when a button is pressed.

NFC card and reader in front of the door, can be "hard wired" rather than over wifi if you prefer. The card doesn't run out of battery but access still can be assigned or revoked if lost.

A passcode: many hardware store doorlocks offer this, if the main problem is your kid losing keys. Then just do automation inside the house as you see fit from motion detectors or whatever your heart desires.

E: a few people ITT don't like to have fun thinking of ideas how to use home automation, even if it's unnecessary.

Most often it's the lowly employee's ass that gets put on the line for being told to break the law in the end. The higher ups get their golden parachute at worst in corporate America.

Rentlar ,

Announce large workforce cuts: line go up?

Announce large investment in workforce (even if it was just cut): line go up more?

I don't really get the logic that's going on the impulsive billionaire imbecile's mind.

Everyone being rehired to Tesla had better be asking for at least double for the trouble Musk put them through.

Rentlar ,

As others have said, I'd suggest either:

  • enabling a catchall address (which will redirect to anything@yourdomain.com --> spam@yourdomain.com)
  • creating an alias: something@yourdomain.com --> mail@yourdomain.com

Both are done on your server/hosting side.

Rentlar ,

Everyone on Masto/Fedi has been memeing about this since the start: Whatever platform Dorsey's on becomes Twitter, lol.

Rentlar ,

Professor Zuckerman vs. Zuckerbot. Who will win?

Rentlar ,

Good luck to OOP on their experiment 🫡

Rentlar ,

Terminal games are where it's at, lol. In high school I've made connect4, battleship and a couple card games in C.

Once I took a Mexican Train domino game code I made in C, ported it to Java, then added graphics that showed everything nicely, but clicking on anything just had it pass a number you would have typed to do the action in the terminal UI version.

Rentlar ,

Yeah I don't use prime video but as soon as I saw they were going to add ads, that opens the door for them to make their app shitty as hell.

Rentlar ,

For anyone else that didn't read the article (or can't hear words in parentheses because they are too quiet):

According to a report from 404 Media, some of those players have been adding fake beaches to OpenStreetMap so they could have easier access to the beach biome in Pokémon Go (though the game Go initially used Google Maps data, it apparently switched to OpenStreetMap at some point in 2017).

"It's going to be a bloody disaster": Tell me again about how the second road tunnel under Sydney Harbour won't make congestion worse?

"Civil engineer Les Wielinga, a former CEO at the now-defunct Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA), made the fiery comments at a NSW parliamentary inquiry into the bungled Rozelle Interchange.

"The Western Harbour Tunnel, which is under construction, will allow drivers travelling between the inner west and the North Shore to bypass the CBD.

"Entries and exits to the tunnel will lie at the Ernest Street interchange in Cammeray and near the Falcon Street interchange at North Sydney.

"'It's going to be a bloody disaster,' Mr Wielinga told the upper house committee on Friday.

"Paul Forward, another former CEO of the RTA, told the inquiry he was concerned about the project's design.

"'You've now got three motorways coming out into this short area, and whilst I would recognise there are some exit points, some off-ramps, those motorways are now all going into the Lane Cove Tunnel,' he said.

"'A large number of lanes are going into two lanes at the Lane Cove Tunnel. Sounds familiar?'"

@fuck_cars

Rentlar ,

Yep fattening the pig for sale. Design a shitty highway, draw traffic into it, then sell off it, and the finance guys are happy, while the commuters pay both the tolls and from the other traffic around the city.

A train tunnel would bring so much more value... sigh...

I know the FOSS fans within our community don't like the terms of Grayjay. That said we have options like NewPipe, ytdlp, nvidious, Libretube, etc. which are FOSS and AFAIK each have different extraction mechanisms, so one change on the page end can't reliably shut down every method. I get that Louis is against Sponsorblock and his personal feelings and morals influence the direction of the software too.

The Grayjay app is a bit more like Shareware, Louis himself described his app's monetization scheme like an infinite free trial. He knows many people are going to use it for free. He knows that others will pay the one time payment for a license, and it doesn't necessarily have to be linked to the install or anything.

The thing is that diversity in the space makes us stronger in the face of the gigantic monolith that Google is. His repair foundation or whatever that was means that he has a few more resources pooled together than the rest of us to put up a legal fight that in the end will hopefully effect change that helps all of us.

Rentlar ,

The one app I can't stand as a snap is firefox, it took a minute to navigate to the first webpage every time I start up. The rest are or more less fine I think, but flatpak meets my needs for most other applications.

Rentlar ,

Both railways say their position is in line with existing regulations laid out in the Railway Safety Act.

I love freight trains and passenger trains. However, the railroads need to treat their workers right like any employer. Don't accept this stupid line which in other words is: We're doing the minimum we can get away with.

Rentlar ,

Father Justin, will you trade my 25 Diplomatic Favour for 20 horses please?

Rentlar ,

That's the crazy thing. He is letting the entire division go instead of just replacing the head he might have had a problem with. So now the good workers and the bad workers if there are such, are all being flushed out of the Tesla toilet.

Rentlar ,

Agreed. Work on capitalist principles and you end up becoming beholden to capitalist principles.

If it could be made once, could it be done again? Main thing is adoption I think, not unlike Lemmy.

Rentlar ,

Uninstalled from a Windows machine. Now being used as a door hinge?

I lol'd at Evergreen. Excellent choice.

Firebox to run my Firefox. Other servers I've dedicated to hosting that I don't interact regularly with I have been less creative with, usually my username and something to do with the server.

Since February 14th, [Advantage Plus] has overspent on numerous occasions and ignored the cost caps we have in place on it,” he said.

If only I could wave my hands, say "AI" and use it as an excuse to steal money from advertisers, but only companies as scummy as Meta can get away with that kind of scam.

Rentlar ,

Woe is me, I can't install other operating systems on my work computer. I'm being paid for every hour Microsoft bugs me or refuses to do what I want it though so, oh well. More time to shitpost and vent on Lemmy!

Tech brands are forcing AI into your gadgets—whether you asked for it or not (arstechnica.com)

Earlier this year, Microsoft added a new key to Windows keyboards for the first time since 1994. Before the news dropped, your mind might’ve raced with the possibilities and potential usefulness of a new addition. However, the button ended up being a Copilot launcher button that doesn’t even work in an innovative way....

Rentlar ,

To tech Companies and their product engineers: whatever you do, please please please let me rebind the special button to do literally anything other than whatever buzzword you're forced to push.

You'll benefit too, every year just slap a new label on the button depending on what's the hot topic. Personal assistant? ChatGPT? Virtual Reality? Whatever gets your investors' hearts racing you can rebrand that button to. Just let it be customizable, for the love of the silicon gods.

Rentlar ,

Tbh I honestly write replies in a style similar to Ophelia_SK (ChatGPT?) except for the www. part, when I am giving paragraphs of genuine advice. Am I bot?

Edit: Looking at it again, it's too long and flowery even for my long form replies.

Rentlar ,

There are many honest criticisms of closed-source Beeper, but I use it so that I don't have to use Meta's apps which will ever-evolve into more powerful data-consuming monsters that they are.

Rentlar ,

https://www.beeper.com/

It's an app to aggregate your chats over a encrypted Matrix protocol, but using Beeper's Matrix servers as relays.

There are complaints about the app being closed source, the app being incompatible with other matrix servers besides their own and they will be implementing an optional paid subscription in the future. All valid criticisms, but they also have released the source for the bridges to each service so that tech savvy people can set up their own service using a different Matrix app.

It's useful for me as an easy way to stay connected with the various contacts on those platforms (until Beeper I was prepared to just go radio silent on them), while still maintaining a degree of separation with Facebook.

Rentlar ,

It's to puts stuff before the game run command.

Normally if you just add options in that box like -fullscreen they appear after the run command.
