I've used one for a very light coating or powdery snow, but more than a couple inches of that it's just easier and faster with a shovel

@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

I live in a place where if someone slips on your sidewalk they can sue, so I'm a little more cautious about it.

Assuming we get snow ever again...

For injuries related to slipping and falling. It's a real thing, and why a lot of places nearby don't even have sidewalks to avoid this liability

This makes me wonder just how awful it would be if we didn't have these dumb classes and obvious test emails.

Dell responds to return-to-office resistance with VPN, badge tracking, and color-coding of employees (arstechnica.com)

After reversing its position on remote work, Dell is reportedly implementing new tracking techniques on May 13 to ensure its workers are following the company's return-to-office (RTO) policy, The Register reported today, citing anonymous sources....

Folks, has corporate culture become a cancer on society?

Become?

Just like in the 70s and 80s when the Big 3 couldn't make a reliable small car and the Japanese drank their milkshake.

Plus ça change, n'est pas?

I do the same with a bunch of content. It's amazing how I'm able to run a streaming service from my basement that's better than Disney or Amazon.

That was awesome! Thanks for sharing!

If you haven't heard of them already, check out A Sound of Thunder. They've got a similar vibe and a similarly kickass lead singer.

Interestingly, I lived in a small town of 3,000 people and up until the 1950s it had a trolley to the nearest small city, which then had trains that took you to the big city, and from there you could go anywhere.

But now the trolley sits in the town square as a monument, mocking everyone as they drive by.

It's a bit like Kessler Syndrome. The more bots on the net the more crap we have to filter through, until eventually we can't use it because there's too much crap.

People have been claiming that new media will destroy society at least since we invented writing, and probably before.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

I think it has a lot more to do with social media than smart phones. I remember kids being bullied through tombstone messages on Oregon Trail floppies.

If the Chinese government is behind this, it's a great play. Having Joe Biden be "the guy who banned tik tok" would severely undermine his election chances.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

14 year olds aren't the only people who use Tik Tok

Directory is the older term, but when they started making computers user friendly they needed a friendlier word for it. Folders make sense because people understand putting files in folders in real life.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly, except like all computer metaphors they break down when you get into the details. I can't put a document in more than one folder and update them at the same time IRL like I can do with a symlink.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

I don't like what Biden stands for and he has my vote.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Since when do morals have anything to do with voting?

If I followed my morals I wouldn't vote at all because I'm morally opposed to the existence of government.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Most companies will let customers know about legislation like that. It's hardly nefarious.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

So they can't talk to people about it because they're not technical experts, but they also have the authority to make decisions despite not being experts.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod , (edited )
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Why assume they know what they’re talking about for every single topic?

Because I would hope they know what they're talking about when they write the legislation. Or at least can explain their reasoning for voting a certain way. Especially when nobody has made the case that TikTok is any more dangerous than Facebook or Twitter.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

They largely don’t write the legislation. Lobby groups draft the materials and if we’re lucky, the congressional aides make a pass and clean things up.

Yes but they should at least be able to explain why they voted a certain way on that legislation, right?

I agree that social media is dangerous for all the reasons mentioned, but I don't see why Zuckerberg and Musk still get to do all those things.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Except Facebook and Twitter are being used to attack the US and spread disinformation and the government isn't doing anything.

But I guess that's what I should expect from a government that cares more about national security than the privacy of its citizens.

@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

My local dispensary had "write your congressman to support legal weed." Is that a threat? Or is it just encouraging people who use your app to participate in politics? It's not like they're encouraging their users to march on Washington or commit violence. They're just telling folks to do what every civics teacher has told them: Write your congressman about things you care about.

If Congress takes that as a threat that says a lot more about Congress than it does about Tik Tok.

There’s a reason western apps are banned in China. Why should a Chinese company not expect action in the west?

I thought that reason was because we post about events that didn't happen and countries that don't exist, not that it was a threat to China's government. We didn't ban apps here because we're the free good guys, and they're the authoritarians.

But I guess both countries are dickweeds now. So it goes...

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Totally agree. Which is why I truly despise nation-states and the people who make me pretend to believe in them.

"There's no water on Mars so we don't have to worry about it" - Elon, probably

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

True, and GM makes plenty of cars that rust at the drop of a hat. My old truck had its brake lines sandwiched between the bed and the frame, and they weren't non-corrosive, so these things regularly fail if you don't keep them dry.

The only boondoggle was not iterating on the design, especially when they couldn't launch intelligence payloads to polar orbits. They should have kept the original fleet and been given funding to develop another one - a "space car" for the Shuttle's "space truck" - that could ferry lighter payloads and a smaller crew to more varied orbits.

I used to think like you but I've grown to like the Shuttle. Without it things like the final Hubble repair and building the ISS would have been a lot more complicated. Yes, it was a very ambitious design with more fatal flaws than we'll ever really know about - what if it had had a major issue in orbit - it kept the dream of manned spaceflight alive, and built a ton of experience at NASA for managing manned spaceflight.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

I think we're seeing two sides of the same coin: The fact that we didn't keep designing new spacecraft is the problem. And I wouldn't blame the shuttle for that, just the American people for losing their zeal.

@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

It feels like something from Trailer Park Boys. Ricky is driving drunk, but right before he gets pulled over he makes Jacob or Corey take the wheel because then he's not driving so he won't get in trouble.

My kitchen sink is really far from my water heater, so I put a 3 gallon electric water heater under the sink. It did the same thing without having to be a new home. Would definitely recommend.

Does the circuit use any water or is it just pumped around and kept heated? Does it use a lot of energy?

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks for those details! That sounds like a great system and beats my failsafe of heating a big pot of water on the woodstove
