I forgot about Bitcoin when it was still mostly worthless. I got rid of my old laptop when it had a ton of issues. I had around 8 btc left in a wallet after spending several hundred on um... An ancient trade route lol.

ShunkW ,

Yeah it sat in my wallet for a long time and wasn't really gaining any value. I didn't have a need for the trade route anymore cuz I just used it once for some exotic spices that I didn't really care for. Mining wasn't an option for me because I didn't have a powerful computer as a broke college kid. So I just kinda checked out.

Still sucks to think about how I could have ended up with a great return, but hindsight is 20/20 and all that.

ShunkW ,

I wish list stuff until a Bandcamp Friday comes around where artists get all the money. I've stopped buying physical media, so waiting on a digital purchase isn't an issue for me.

ShunkW ,

For now, they still provide DRM free downloads in FLAC. And they still pay the artists on the Fridays. I'll continue using it till they inevitably fuck it up.

ShunkW ,

The other key feature being cost. A VDI terminal is much cheaper than actual PCs for employees. When I was working IT for a large company, we were able to get them in bulk for about $100 each. A PC cost us at least $800.

EA wants to place in-game ads in its full-price AAA games, again (www.techspot.com)

EA has tried this before, with predictable results. In 2020, EA Sports UFC 4 included full-screen ads for the Amazon Prime series The Boys that would appear during 'Replay' moments. These were absent from the game when it launched, with EA introducing the ads about a month later, thereby preventing them from being highlighted in...

ShunkW ,

I used to buy FIFA and NHL games, once every few years. But they've gotten so shitty I just gave up on them. I haven't played a soccer game in years now. PES used to be a good alternative but I've heard it's not great anymore either.

ShunkW ,

Because you're spamming it? Put them all in one post.

Imagine that…

Most patients predicted that their worst symptoms when exposed to gluten would be classic lower digestive problems like diarrhea, bloating and cramps. However, none of these occurred during the acute immune responses observed by Anderson’s team. Instead, patients experienced nausea and vomiting. Anderson describes them as,...

ShunkW ,

I mean... How could they not be possible symptoms of a disease that affects the entire GI tract? Maybe they're not as common, but it would make sense that anything of that nature could cause nausea and vomiting

ShunkW ,

That really sucks. I'm sorry to hear that. I have some minor issues with types of foods that I love, but they're not nearly that serious. I can't imagine having this reaction to gluten.

ShunkW ,

Bandcamp has been great but I fear the enshittification coming. Half the staff was fired by Epic Games last year and then it was sold to a music conglomerate.

ShunkW ,

And if you have the knowledge or savvy to use a network wide solution like pihole, I haven't seen an ad in over a year. It's not a perfect solution cuz I haven't figured out how to filter ads on Mobile. But I've accepted that I just watch YouTube on my laptop or desktop.

ShunkW ,

The author used to hang out on a forum I was part of before the book came out. I think he released it in a serial format and was really cool to interact with

ShunkW ,

I dunno anything about the Kanye incident, but skinheads started and there continue to be non racist skinheads everywhere. It wasn't a brief period of time at all.

ShunkW ,

I mean, Kirk Hammet literally wore swastika shirts back in the day. I used to be a huge Metallica fan boy when I was younger but eesh.

ShunkW ,
ShunkW ,

Yeah I think it was either before Metallica, or early days. I've tried to find a picture, but they've done a good job of scrubbing it from the Internet. I know my source is "trust me bro" at this point lol, but I swear I've seen it multiple times years ago

ShunkW ,

Ah got it. You're just a shitty troll

ShunkW ,

The fuck are you talking about? These are surveillance satellites, not some unity communications empowering satellites or something.

HP’s 'All-In' Printer Rental Watches Everything You Print, Tells HP All About It (www.extremetech.com)

In addition to tracking the printer’s online or offline status, page count, and ink levels, your rented printer will look at the types of documents you’re printing (e.g., PDF, JPG, Word), the types of devices that initiated the print job, “peripheral devices,” and other “metrics” related to the service, the All-In...

I'll stick to my Brother laser printer. Bought it during the pandemic and still haven't been through an entire toner cartridge. Never had an issue printing either.

I got it for work documents that needed signed and mailed and such. And I like to print out flow charts and the like for big projects so I can reference them without having to pull them up digitally.

A pharmacist fills the prescription AFTER a doctor writes the order.

ShunkW ,

Pharmacists cannot order drugs for a patient. A doctor (and certain other medical professionals) must prescribe the drug first, and the pharmacy fulfills the order.

The system breached is used by doctors to send the orders to the pharmacy.

ShunkW ,

I heard about this last weekend when one of my prescriptions had to be written on paper because it's a controlled substance. The normal stuff can still be sent electronically, but any controlled drug is being done manually right now.

ShunkW ,

You're not understanding, or you're arguing in bad faith. This is the system that doctors use to send prescriptions electronically to pharmacists so that the patient can pick up the medication.

ShunkW ,

This could just have been a policy that my provider put in place. This was also a one time order following a hospital stay which might make a difference.

ShunkW ,

I didn't consider existing orders vs a one time prescription making a difference in my case. It also could just be my provider and others in my area - my friend who goes through another hospital system here for scheduled drugs has had to go through paper prescriptions if there wasn't already a refill on record.

I guess each system is handling it the way they see fit.

ShunkW ,

Well I had this same medicine sent over electronically a couple months prior. The doctor I saw told me this was the reason they would only give me a paper script this time around.

ShunkW ,

I had 7 prescriptions sent over at once and got one on paper. The doctor told me this was the reason that the one controlled substance was given to me on paper.

Also I had been given this need electronically once before a couple months prior.

ShunkW ,

I had it done electronically a couple months beforehand. The doctor told me this is why their policy at the time was to write controlled drugs on paper for the time being.

ShunkW ,

Yes, a VPN with strong authentication is what you want.

ShunkW ,

I mean, if you're a contractor and they haven't discussed extending more than a month ahead of time, expect your contract to end on its end date. That's just common sense.

ShunkW ,

Oh the US has tried to fix this issue multiple times. The end result was many of us getting laid off after 18 months every time because they couldn't extend our contacts any further by law. There's no reason for a company to convert a contractor if they're not required to.

ShunkW ,

Yep. Worked with them before. They coached their consultants to pass our tech interviews but had zero actual experience. One guy didn't know how to open a rails console... On a rails app job. Accenture is just as bad.

ShunkW ,

Yeah it's really frustrating. I'm fortunately at a level where the contracting companies have to provide at least decent benefits to get employees. But contracting sucks. Often you're restricted in what you can do, causing unnecessary delays to getting software done at the rate the company wants.

I've been yelled at by upper management for not doing something I legally wasn't allowed to. No apology when an employee on the call pointed it out of course.

It's a shit show. But my market is fucked right now so I'm about to go get a job at a grocery store or something and figure it out I guess.

ShunkW ,

I would never sign a contract without knowing the details.

ShunkW ,

Lol ok Hun. You tell me that when you need to pay bills and it's the only offer on the table, idiot.

ShunkW ,

That's not true. When they sign to work with a client, they're given an initial end date. Worked with many of them throughout the years.

ShunkW ,

That's really only true for independent contractors, not W2 contract work to be fair. And every 1099 contract I've worked I've always clarified that stipulation in writing. In the interest of working together I do agree to be on daily or semi daily standups to allow progress.

ShunkW ,

I can't believe it's controversial to say you should read a contract before you sign it.

ShunkW ,

It's brave to read a contract before you sign it? I guess I'm the bravest then, cuz not doing so is stupid.

ShunkW ,

And I assure you they are. We had dozens of contractors that were doing ongoing work, not project based. They were all given a contract with terms to sign that outlined the timeline. Sometimes they were extended, other times not.

ShunkW ,

If you can't be bothered to read a contract before you sign it, then yes, you're not clever.

ShunkW ,

I've never seen an employment contact that complex and I've worked tons of contact gigs over my career, and been the hiring senior engineer on multiple others. They are not like that at all.

ShunkW ,

You understand they're completely different operating systems right? The presence of a massive vulnerability in one doesn't necessitate the same in the other. Look at the zero click vulnerabilities in iOS from 2022 that didn't exist in Android.

ShunkW ,

I was just nit picking your statement that you seem to think that a vulnerability MUST exist on both platforms. The article later goes on to say that it can supposedly affect both device types.

Mark Zuckerberg: Tech layoffs in 2024 have been a natural response to pandemic-era over hiring::Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes companies are still readjusting to pandemic-era hiring tactics amid a flurry of layoffs across the industry.

ShunkW ,

It's an adjustment to corporate greed. That's for sure. My market is completely fucked. Been unemployed since November.

ShunkW ,

HIPAA fines are massive for now. So the cost risk doesn't work for them yet. But I'm sure some politicians will find a way to make it just the cost of doing business soon.

ShunkW ,

When was that? I remember finding it in the early 2000s and it was awful even then. But I only spent my time there on b
