For ppl like myself, let's hope that we can be the family we wish we had...

A thousand times this! My family sucked at being supportive. But if anything, they taught me what not to do as a parent.

Imagine that…

Most patients predicted that their worst symptoms when exposed to gluten would be classic lower digestive problems like diarrhea, bloating and cramps. However, none of these occurred during the acute immune responses observed by Anderson’s team. Instead, patients experienced nausea and vomiting. Anderson describes them as,...

I, for one, was diagnosed several years ago with Celiac’s. I had the upper endoscopy and everything to prove it. It wasn’t until about a month ago that I started getting the food poisoning-like vomiting and excruciating abdominal pain when accidentally having gluten. Before then, it was only ever diarrhea as the worst outcome.

Nobody warned me it could get this bad. So I was careless with my approach to being gluten free. But now that I know how severe it really is, I will definitely be more attentive going forward.

I imagine the vomiting is the body’s way to purge the “poison” in my stomach, and prevents it from getting into my digestive system.

Eh, it’s probably been on the dark web for a while now given how frequent and massive data leaks have become. Worry more about unauthorized use/access to your credit and/or identity.

  1. Place freezes on your credit for Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax (it’s free)
  2. Lock any credit cards you don’t use regularly
  3. Pull your credit reports from each agency (you get one a year for free) and verify activity
  4. Enable balance notifications for your credit cards and bank accounts (eg, high transaction amount = $0.00 will alert you to every purchase made)
  5. Opt out of Data Brokers like LexusNexus
  6. Don’t use the same password for multiple websites. If you don’t already, use a password manager like KeePass and let it generate new passwords for you

It’s all about the diligence these days. Your morning should be fine. The worst thing you can receive is a high transaction amount alert you didn’t authorize. But card companies and banks have gotten good about dealing with those when they happen.

I believe that the wording is awkward in that you will need additional information if you’re one of the three listed criteria. If you’re just removing it from public view, you only need to provide your name, address, phone and social security number.

It looks like you can trade up to a newer supported device, or get a 50% off coupon, depending on whether you’re a subscriber or not.

https://www.theverge.com/2023/4/7/23673165/google-nest-dropcam-nest-secure-eol

To soften the blow, Google’s offering a free indoor wired Nest Cam to Dropcam owners who subscribe to Nest Aware. Nonsubscribers will get a 50 percent-off coupon. The promotion runs until May 7, 2024, so you can keep using your Dropcam until it stops working.

Still sucks, but it’s better than having a paperweight in your hands. Also note:

Google will ship you a prepaid recycling box if you ask.

This right here. It is so far gone, and deeply entrenched into how society works at fundamental levels, that it is impossible to avoid any mega corporations and their influence on how we live (not just tech companies too).

I know that pointing fingers does nothing to help, but this really is Reagan’s fault with his so-called trickle down economics.

What’s more disturbing than the filmmakers continually trying to get the ips, is that the courts keep entertaining the filmmakers. At what point does the legal system say enough?

Bruh.

forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos)

dohpaz42 ,
@dohpaz42@lemmy.world avatar

I read the article, and a few points stuck out to me:

  1. This has been a restriction since 2021; now it’s documented in the files and not just the online EULA (ie consistent)
  2. This is a protection to disallow other companies like Intel and AMD from profiting off of Nvidia’s work
  3. Nothing is stopping anybody from porting the software to other hardware, eg

Recompiling existing CUDA programs remains perfectly legal. To simplify this, both AMD and Intel have tools to port CUDA programs to their ROCm (1) and OpenAPI platforms, respectively.

I’m all for piracy and personal freedoms, but it doesn’t seem to be what this is about. It’s about combating other companies profiting off Nvidia’s work. Companies should be able to fight back against other companies (or countries).

I mean it’s not like Nvidia is unreasonably suing open-source projects into oblivion or anything, or subpoenaing websites for user data; at least, not yet.

People need to start speaking out more against this type of behavior, and I don’t just mean in blogs and forums. I mean write the FCC, write the Attorney Generals in your state. Dare i say, write your congressmen (yeah, mine are the apathetic, pro-business politicians who don’t really care about the little people too).

Make some noise folks.

Seriously, companies like this get away with these shenanigans because we the people have been beaten into submission for so long that we believe we are powerless (I’m guilty of feeling this way). We need to start changing that. And nothing is easier than writing letters these days.

Raspberry Pi is planning a London IPO, but its CEO expects “no change” in focus (arstechnica.com)

The business arm of Raspberry Pi is preparing to make an initial public offering (IPO) in London. CEO Eben Upton tells Ars that should the IPO happen, it will let Raspberry Pi's not-for-profit side expand by "at least a factor of 2X." And while it's "an understandable thing" that Raspberry Pi enthusiasts could be concerned,...

  • Google
  • Reddit

Those are the best two examples that come to my mind. Both were great until they IPO’d.

The problem, as I see it, with IPO’s is that the company becomes beholden to shareholders who care nothing for the product, and only for the profit. Quality and profit are fairly mutually exclusive these days.

dohpaz42 ,
@dohpaz42@lemmy.world avatar

Two that I can think of are the BananaPi and OrangePi. Google “raspberry pi alternatives” and I’m sure you’ll find much more.

dohpaz42 ,
@dohpaz42@lemmy.world avatar

Going IPO does not immediately turn a company evil. That’s something that happens over time, because of being beholden to so many shareholders who only care about profit.

Reddit hasn’t even IPO’d yet.

Reddit has been making many user-detrimental changes in preparation for their IPO.

Eh, money itself is not the problem. There is inherently nothing wrong with trading money for labor. It’s capitalism (late-stage especially) that ruins everything. The idea you’ve got to work so hard, for so little, is mind-boggling. And the fact that a lot of people are brainwashed into believing that is a normal and okay thing to do… crazy.

Good for that guy to be able to follow his dreams. If he had the skills for the job, I’d hire him even with the gap, just because of his dedication and bravery.

dohpaz42 , (edited )
@dohpaz42@lemmy.world avatar

I still struggle to understand what capitalism means in this context. If it is bad/ruins everything, it has to be bad in comparsion to something right?

By definition, capitalism is "The concentration or massing of capital in the hands of a few; also, the power or influence of large or combined capital". To further expand on that, at least in my terms, it also means the abuse of that power at the expense of the workers. For example, you have large corporations who bust unions because they fear losing some or all of their power against their workers; US federal minimum wage, which already does not keep up with inflation, was last raised in 2009; the expectation of working long hours (salaried workers) without being paid any sort of overtime or other compensation.

What is that (imagined or real) alternative you so adamantly try to attribute as a worthy way of living?

I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm a socialist (democratic or otherwise), but I do feel that corporations need to be reigned in a bit; especially when it comes to their ability to lobby governments and write laws that favor themselves (again, at the expense of workers). They do need to be taxed more fairly and consistently, held to higher standards with respect to punishment when breaking the law (see below).

Amazon example:

According to Macrotrends, Amazon is worth over $1.6 trillion dollars as of January 2024. They were recently fined $35 million by France for their aggressive surveillance of warehouse workers. That comes out to about 0.0021875% of their net worth. That's roughly 2 one-hundred-thousandths of their net worth. Where's the punishment? That's more like a fee for them to get away with worker abuse.

Edit: Fix error with the decimal place name.

This is where I believe that other site did a decent job with their front page: they created filters that divided it into most popular, what's trending, and what's new. I like seeing posts from the variety of different communities, but I do not necessarily want to see every single post. Especially the ones from the same community, in succession. Having a way to only see the ones that are considered "popular" would be nice.

I feel it's equally important to point ot that Torvalds recognized his toxic behavior, apologized for it, and took steps to rectify it.

In an email to the Linux Kernel Mailing List, which also addresses the kernel update of Linux 4.19-rc4, Torvalds writes: "I need to change some of my behavior, and I want to apologize to the people that my personal behavior hurt and possibly drove away from kernel development entirely."

"I am going to take time off and get some assistance on how to understand people's emotions and respond appropriately."
