i mean, people outside of america exist :)

i don't think nepalese people find the american civil rights movement tremendously relevant, for example

"hey dude what's up?"

-"i am consumed by an ever-present deep-seated need for a partner, an all-consuming urge to experience the physical and emotional pleasure of intimate contact with a woman. Every waking moment i do not distract myself is spent pining for something i seemingly cannot have and it is slowly but surely grinding me down."

death sentence seems a bit excessive, surely they can climb? Yeah putting them on the ground probably makes it much more likely they'll get nabbed by a predator before they get up a tree, but it feels like saying "putting a human in a tree is a death sentence"

that last bit tells me you're either old or have hearing damage: we have some bats around me and despite never once seeing them it's plainly obvious to me that they exist thanks to their shrill squeaky calls in the twilight.

he literally says in the video that their calls range from 20kHz to 200kHz, with 20kHz being the normal top range of human hearing for someone without hearing damage.

maybe swedish ones are just constantly death metal growling

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

It seems here in sweden none of it gets to call itself anything other than margarine, but the stuff i buy (which behaves the same as butter-based stuff) seems to have about 20% coconut/shea fat.

had the same problem with subnautica, brilliant game but unfortunately i cannot go further than about 25% into the grassy plateaus (the red grass area) before my lizard brain goes "lmao nope, fuck that shit"

It's at least nice to know i'd be the only survivor in a horror movie, i would be physically unable to enter the haunted mansion.

this is at the very least not the full truth, this YDAW episode goes over the function of split pupils at least in reptiles:

as much of a PSA as this is a meme lol. don’t seek dietary advice from randos on the internet. everyone is different and the advice you see from @bonerfart on !memes can be dangerous and should be taken with a grain of salt (metaphorically, not a dietary recommendation 😜). instead consider one or both of:...

not a thing i've ever heard of in sweden, either apartments are just expensive or you need to sign up for a waiting list and maintain your spot for like 7 years until you have the queue points needed for the apartment you want to rent

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

the fact that most of the rent goes to pure landlord profit becomes obvious with municipal housing here in sweden, where we basically only pay for maintenance.

suddenly the rent is so cheap that the americans i've told it to just wanted to cry, 400€/month for a small apartment that's plenty big enough for a single person, and full on family apartments can be had for as low as 600€/month if you look around for a while.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

lie through your teeth, the landlord won't hesitate to blatantly lie so neither should you.

oh no no mr landlord sir, this isn't my dad, this is my "previous landlord"!

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

it's usually not that extreme, but that's how it is in the large cities.

More normal for an average city is probably like 3 years waiting, you're expected to sign up before you have any intentions of moving out from your parents.

i mean i wouldn't be opposed to a strong man leader, provided they're an absolute saint and ceaselessly preach about being good to one another and spends shitloads of time practising what they preach.

Humans do naturally gravitate towards having leaders, however it's important that everyone keeps in mind that leaders get their power because people trust them, and if they violate that trust they shouldn't keep the power.
Being a leader shouldn't really be a position of power, it should be a position of responsibility and scrutiny.

jokes on them, i'm just going to get water or fucking leave, i'm not paying 10 bucks for a beverage when you can buy soda at the store for 1$ per liter.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

why would you not? milk taste good mmmm

especially if i'm at a less fancy restaurant and i'm ordering a dish with mashed potatoes and gravy, milk is 100% the appropriate beverage.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I don't see why it'd be that expensive, it'd basically just be a fancy crane.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I'm cautiously optimistic about this, it seems like an okay idea and the fact that they have vehicles working on a test track IRL means it's at least not an obvious scam like hyperloop.

Also the fact that they have a specific use case in mind, don't say it's going to revolutionize all transportation, and are reusing existing infrastructure, all bode well.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

The problem is that the wheels have flanges on both sides, so I don't think switches work.

The best solution would be a loop connecting the rails at each end, but that's obviously not compatible with running regular freight trains since it would need to be switchless.

Thus presumably they need to be externally flipped around and moved, for which I'd guess a crane like those used for moving containers on and off trains is ideal.

With a crane they could also easily move the vehicles to a storage area so freight trains can pass through.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Look at the wheels, flanges on both sides.

I don't think that's compatible with switches.

people really need to fucking train their small dogs, it's not okay to let them act like that.

With big dogs they consequences of not training them are too severe for people to completely ignore it, but with small dogs they just sort of end up as neurotic wrecks and people seem to think that's.. cute??

no, train your fucking dogs, it's not normal for small dogs to be nervous and aggressive, you're fucking abusing your family members.

This is what small dogs should be like:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cn0KzdIc40

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

eh, if you take on the responsibility of owning a dog training them well is really a big part of that responsibility, if you want a dog that needs minimal training just get a golden retriever.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

so like just put them in resealable plastic bags, that's a better use of the plastic than 5 small packages and means you don't need the cardboard either!

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

not really, a basic calculator doesn't tend to have variables and stuff like that

i say it's a glorified calculator because it's just getting input in the form of numbers (again, it has no clue what a language or word is) and spitting back out some numbers that are then reconstructed into words, which is precisely how we use calculators.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

i mean sure they didn't have modern medicine, but they were generally in way better health than we are now and still had basic plant medicine.

washing off wounds and wrapping them in medicinal leaves does a lot, and there is archaeological evidence of individuals who were in extremely bad health and yet through care from their tribe they managed to survive for years in such a state.

This idea that hunter-gatherers lived lives of misery and were too dumb to try to prevent bad things is unfortunately very widespread, when the reality is that hunter-gatherers had it about as good as you can expect from living without modern technology.
