Me, an American, to my German cousin:

"So, yeah, I'm changing email addresses, here's my new one."

"Email? Are you using WhatsApp?"

"Er, no, how about text?"

"We all have WhatsApp."

"Okay, maybe Google Chat?"

"WhatsApp? WhatsApp."

Already got my NEW 12-core machine before prices go up, running Debian 100%. With my 25 year history of using Linux and pirating Windows, MS never saw a damn penny from me, and I'm proud of that fact. Not even an OEM license (all my laptops I ever had were work supplied and I build my own PCs)

My kid discovered that he can hit the "report" button on the YouTube app on the TV to skip the ads immediately. So now every ad gets reported as "inappropriate".

I'm proud of him.

Yeah at some point, you want to do work on your computer, not work on your computer.

Anyone in need of a DIP socket compatible breakout module with a microcontroller emulating a Z80? That doesn't sound too hard to design and build.

Sugar. It's the metric fucktons of sugar.

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

I'm just here waiting for my wife to finally snap and ask about getting Linux on her gaming PC. I've been using it for 20 years now. The complaints are becoming more and more numerous these days, it's only a matter of time.

TimeSquirrel ,
@TimeSquirrel@kbin.social avatar

That's the thing, she's getting tired of having to do all that bullshit and then getting a lot of it reverted during an update. The annoyances are starting to outweigh the convenience. She's not dumb, she knows her way around computers and is well aware of methods to disable this crap.

Keeping it closed source so no-one could see what sacrilege he’d done to get there

I often feel this way about my own code. Yeah I wanna share but...I don't want to get torn apart by 10x developers. There's a lot of things I'm ashamed of.

USSR? It almost came to blows with a couple hardcore commie holdouts, but at the end of the day they just signed the death certificate of the USSR without much incident.

TimeSquirrel ,

The Buran was actually quite technologically advanced. It was able to fly to orbit and land itself completely autonomously.

TimeSquirrel ,
@TimeSquirrel@kbin.social avatar

It was canceled because of budget issues and also the fall of the USSR itself. USSR wasn't really doing too hot at the time, economically. Not because it was dangerous. It was obviously proven space-worthy.

"PC" actually refers to a specific architecture based on the original IBM PC. PCs are personal computers but not all personal computers are PCs.

It'd be like as if we still referred to ARM-based devices as being "Acorn" devices. It's one of those brand names that the public has turned into a generalized noun, like Kleenex and Bandaids.

AI is helping me learn and program C++. It's built into my IDE. Much more efficient than searching stackoverflow. Whenever it comes up with something I've never seen before, I learn what that thing does and mentally store it away for future use. As time goes on, I'm relying on it less and less. But right now it's amazing. It's like having a tutor right there with you who you can ask questions anytime, 24/7.

I hope a point comes where my kid can just talk to a computer, tell it the specifics of the program he wants to create, and have the computer just program the entire thing. That's the future we are headed towards. Ordinary folks being able to create software.

TimeSquirrel ,
@TimeSquirrel@kbin.social avatar

I guess it's not great for things requiring domain knowledge. Programming seems to be easy for it, as programs are very structured, predictable, and logical. That's where its pattern-matching-and-prediction abilities shine.

Paedophiles create nude AI images of children to extort from them, says charity | Internet safety | The Guardian (www.theguardian.com)

Internet Watch Foundation has found a manual on dark web encouraging criminals to use software tools that remove clothing. The manipulated image could then be used against the child to blackmail them into sending more graphic content, the IWF said.

Yes, you do. We all have the potential for the most horrific acts of evil you can imagine in the right circumstances. That's why we usually have such a hard time when we give people power to rule over others and need a convoluted system of checks and balances to make sure nobody becomes a dick. Yet it still happens. Benevolence is not the default human state. You have to work to stay that way. That ability separates us from the brutal world of the wild.

They can see the entire URL, not just the domain. They just can't see the contents themselves. But they can still see "dudesfuckingfurniture.com/gettingfreakywithadresser.mpeg"

Edit: I might be wrong

TimeSquirrel ,

After more research, you might be right. I could have sworn I saw full URLs in my router logs on encrypted sites though. I'll have to check again.

Also, they’re absolutely full of self-tapping screws.

I think I just figured out a way to see where they are supported from on the inside...

Sea floor extremophiles: exist

Enceladus' core likely interacts with the ocean through hydrothermal vents, similar to structures found on Earth's ocean floor. These vents are believed to have played a role in the origin of life on our planet.

There are lifeforms on Earth that still live off these vents.

Let's not give Nintendo credit for this one. His name is Alexey Pajitnov.

Context-aware AI is where it's at. One that's
integrated into your IDE and can see your entire codebase and offer suggestions with functions and variables that actually match the ones in your libraries. Github Copilot does this.

Once the codebase gets large enough, a lot of times you can just write out a comment and suddenly you'll have a completely functional code block pop up underneath it, and you hit "tab" to accept it and move on. It's a very sophisticated autocomplete. It removes tediousness and lets you focus on logic.

It's just the same classic bleed over of socially awkward nerds being into multiple things, like Star Trek, Star Wars, tech, programming, RPG gaming, anime, comic books, and of course, the furry fandom.

You'll find lots of Linux users among those subgroups too.
