Time to make a billion dollars on something else, then start up a car company designed to fail. No investors, design a car for a 60-70k buying price, few bells and whistles, but built to last indefinitely with basic maintenance. Start the company planning to practically close it down just after the last preorder customer has their car delivered and become a maintenance company with a few employees to make replacement parts and install them. If demand rises, redesign for the new times, ramp up and do it all again.

I think modern safety standards alone would cost a few hundred million in research, or make it necessary to start from an existing donar car to make the type of thing I'm dreaming of.

I doubt a modern manufacturer would want to partner with a company designed to make basic but everlasting vehicles, so the imaginary billionaire would probably need to buy up whatever car the engineers want to start from in bulk.

Instagram's unskippable ads test causes outrage among users (www.techspot.com)

Instagram has long been accused of stealing features from platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat, and Twitter/X. It appears that the company has looked to YouTube for its latest idea: unskippable ads that you have to watch for a period of time before being able to scroll further....

What's the difference? Most of what's on there is an ad for something. A lifestyle, a look, a road trip destination, a festival, a food.

I was hoping they'd start adding a sort of rounded plastic shell to make it more aerodynamic and cover over the sharp edges, but if customers still like them after an injury there's no incentive to dull the edges.

If enough non-customers are killed, they may have to do something, but idk what.

I very much remember why those were traumatic

Scamper the Penguin, anyone?

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Yep, they suddenly started doing that early this morning after several hours of playing videos just fine.

Prepaid flip phones still exist.

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Absolutely. Sometimes I consider getting a separate Bluetooth keyboard, but I seriously doubt it would be similar enough to scratch the itch. I really miss knowing exactly where all the keys are by feel and typing without looking.

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

I want to be able to pull up an 80% version of a website on my phone, and have a button to open the full website on my computer for when I get home.

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Now that I've seen this... Most of the things people want out of a dumb phone can be accomplished by putting an android on ultra power saving mode. Except physical keyboards.

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Good. Set a precedent that you have to be careful of making wildly unrealistic claims.

Having understood that it's an awful comic with an irrelevant main character, I'm still confused on why it's worth put any effort into editing these comics?

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, ok. Just a routine thing to do

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

One more thing that makes Tesla hacking a profitable skill.

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

If that's all it is, then simply charge less without making any changes.

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

It helped me to know that checking out items helps the library.

I always thought of it as being a consumer of library resources, but the fact that the books/movies/library of things items are being checked out helps them prove that their services are useful to the community.

Ultra specific storage cubbies for your favorite 5 tools. Label tags. Cabinet door knobs. Print in place toy cars with rolling wheels and doors that open. Compliant mechanisms. A coin sorting device. If they can print flexible things, phone cases.

Do not expect anything 3d printed to be food safe.

They influence the buying decisions of their audience.

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Getting out of hand? They've been out of hand for a while.

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Lower power density, higher cycle life, safer. Sounds good for stationary power storage.

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, absolutely. For a regular daily commute to a job that allows you to afford 2 vehicles, having one of the two with a shorter range with more charge cycles makes a lot of sense.

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, a car that started out with 150 miles of range, has degraded to about 80 miles of range, and is known to be safe would be ideal.

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

On Facebook... So there's a clear trail of who is planning what and who is agreeing to go along. People with long histories of posting far right content, so when they inevitably cry "but a leftist plant orchestrated all this" there is evidence to the contrary.

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

It's not even "tracking down". It's public information that is easily searchable. It should be easy to stay 2 steps ahead of these groups planning things out in the open.

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, do it. Quit being a consumer of mixed source power, start being a producer of steady, good energy.

(Dirty enough that calling it clean green energy gets pushback, but far better than non-green normal sources like coal or natural gas.)

I'm guessing that it can run multiplayer Doom with ray tracing turned on.

It seems to be a soul-crushing job. Better to give it to the bots who have no soul.

Can't show ads in my feed if I don't have a feed!

If they don't know, they don't need to know.

Just send me the bill/refund according to what you know, IRS.

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Even if they don't fail, knowing how to hack them, how to replace the Tesla computer with your own that functions without Tesla approval, how to make the car function without self driving that might lock up the tires at highway speeds... These are valuable skills to have.

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, but I can leave the site alone and go on with my life. Sorry to anyone who is required to use either or both for work or whatever

Usernameblankface ,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Seems like ai companies should take some of that investor cash and build up their own power supply. Maybe they can be the ones to use the small, modular nuclear power stations I've heard a little about. Or go bananas on solar and various energy storage solutions.

I try to use "because I said so" as little as possible. It's a lot more work, but they know why they're doing most of what they need to do, and they know why they're avoiding what they should not do.

Edit: I've noticed that making an effort to avoid "because I said so" has built up a habit of thinking about why I'm telling them to do something before I say it out loud. Often times, this changes what I'm about to tell them to do.

If there is any way to match up new blades coming in with shipments of old blades or worn out components going back, that would be ideal.

But also large bags of sea water would do the trick.

When their research to find that one "This strategy is guaranteed to get you a date!" Doesn't play out the way it's promised

Bold of you to assume that everyone knows movies and shows aren't real.

    Hmm, seems like there is something you could do differently in this situation.

    Usernameblankface ,
    @Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

    Is she actually helpless without your money? Is absolutely cutting her off the only other option available to you?

    Idk, it's your money, do what you want with it.

    I'm sure these sites can't do anything at all ever to make any impact at all on this issue.

    unless they're okay with nudging their profit margins downward to get it done

    Usernameblankface ,
    @Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

    Yes, if the cost is low enough that the price per Kw is less, I think we would find more places to put it. On fences, on balconies, on rooftops of course, on awnings for parking spaces, on gazebos as a shade curtain, on pavilion rooftops.... Yeah

    Usernameblankface ,
    @Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

    Also, as we realize that we don't need 400+ miles of range in a commuter car, cheaper battery chemistries make a lot of sense, despite their shorter range per kg or lb

    Usernameblankface ,
    @Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

    I think trim packages or settings in the car that trade acceleration for range make a lot of sense.

    Usernameblankface ,
    @Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

    Yes, and varying the amount of power put into the system would increase or decrease the total range. A full power launch depletes the battery more quickly than a gentle, controlled acceleration to road speed.

    I'm talking about limiting the amount of power that can be dumped into the motor at any given time, or limiting the power of the motor itself in order to get a more efficient experience.

    Usernameblankface ,
    @Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

    Yeah, it's about the price of a full engine and transmission replacement for an internal combustion car.

    The posted speed limit plus 5mph is considered normal where I'm from in America. 10 over is asking for a ticket.

    I visited Texas once, and was amazed to see most everyone driving 20-30mph over the posted limit, even past the speed traps with no consequences.
