As an Amateur Artist (my pfp was drawn by me) -- You are correct. Though in this particular picture I have no trouble telling her shape from the background objects.

Addendum: In cartoon art, generally, black fills are avoided. Instead you use very dark grey for black things, so as to keep the (black) outline distinct. Other artstyles have other ways of doing stuff.

I've been a Linux user for 15 years now. I run a small Portuguese language blog about open source software. I'd be ascending the hill myself.

... And the original meme, which I edited, was about Pathfinder players climbing the hill to evangelise to DnD 5 players. And was sent to the group where me and my friends play Pathfinder biweekly.

It seems most people got the joke.

I'd rather they rip the bandaid off and not pretend they are my friend. You are firing me. You are removing me from my source of income. Stop trying to be "pleasant" because it just looks like you are enjoying it.

No smiles, no affected happiness, no weasel words about being "let go". Just say "yeah, sorry, you're fired". The more emotionless you can make it on your end, the better.

Heck don't even fire me in person. Send me an e-mail. It's a lot more... Humane. Less cruel.

Cheek aside I believe the word would be Videophiles to pair with Audiophiles.

A DE tries to be a full operating environment, it has panels and configuration tools and (...) all as part of the package

A WM only does window management, and other things need to be added separately. The line blurs a bit since most people who use WMs end up adding a lot of other stuff to them to the point it might as well be a DE, only it was built piecemeal.

VinesNFluff ,
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

My DE choices:

  • KDE Plasma -- It's pretty, it's customizable. Workflow is customizable
  • XFCE -- Honestly I consider XFCE to be like Plasma's sibling, in that its workflow is also very customizable and there is a lot of space for theming, but is lighter and acts nicer on weaker hardware

I tried Gnome and I just hate it? It needs a lot of fennagling to look and act in a way I find enjoyable. Cinnamon is eeeeeeeeehhhhh.

WM-wise, I played with Hyprland and I3WM, but tiling WMs aren't for me. They just aren't. For what convenience I gained from being able to use Super+something to do basically everything, I don't enjoy the workflow.

I also used Wayfire for a bit -- Writing my own configuration file and customizing everything IS fun, but like.... Nah?

VinesNFluff ,
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

None that I know of. Though you can build your own operating environment centered around Hyprland. Their wiki is pretty good and their config files are nice and simple to understand. I did that for a lark a few months back.

.... The catch is that, y'know, it's a whole afternoon spent tinkering to get it right.

VinesNFluff ,
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

YMMV of course. It took me an afternoon to get it to a point where it had the stuff I needed and was enjoyable to use.

... f'course I didn't stick with it, as I said in my toplevel post, turns out tiling WMs aren't for me.

That means everything he makes is pure evil by definition and explanations as to why it's bad will be invented post-hoc to make it make sense.

Using Linux is often about ethics, it just doesn’t make you a good person.

Yeah, a user is passive. Now if you contribute to FLOSS projects, either with money or knowledge, then we can talk about your ethical superiority (I totally don't btw, can't afford the money, and don't have the knowledge)

I'll dunk on Americans, but only and exclusively when they are ranting about how EVIL other international powers are.

It has little to do with your election cycle and lots to do with the fact that your CIA destroyed my country's future twice, both in lived memory, one I was already an adult for. You could say I have a vendetta. :3

Are we 100% sure those are even persons running the accounts, and not LLM bots trained on the worst Twitter Threads imaginable?

VinesNFluff ,
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

The conversation in this thread reminded me of a thing I saw on Reddit ages ago, of feeding /dev/random into aplay with some parameters I unfortunately forgot, to get a series of random noise that sounds almost musical.

Without the parameters you just get white noise sadly.

What non-FOSS software have you been unable to quit?

For me, Google video search, Google books (Internet Archive is good, but doesn't always have the same stuff), Adobe InDesign (but in the process of learning LaTeX), and Typewise. As for the Google stuff, I liked Whoogle a lot, but almost all their instances seem to have been blocked or shut down. Also, apologies if this is...

Can't speak for any country but my own (Brazil)

The reason WhatsApp is such a thing here is an interesting little historical path.

See, texting never really took off here in Brazil. Because phone service providers would charge per individual message. And while the charge was like 5 cents per message, that shit builds up. So unless you're rich... You won't be texting.

So when smartphones, and with them, data plans (that offered very little data, around 4 gigs is the average nowadays, it was a few megs back then) came around, internet-based messaging services became our texting. Because if you have, idk, 512 megs of data in your plan, that's not a lot but it is more than enough for messaging over an app.

WhatsApp was the one that got popular, no idea why.

It was popular with the youths(tm) first in the early 10s, then families hopped on, dragged in by their young-adult kids no doubt, and then... Everything! Because once the Boomers had learned how to use this one app, every business under the sun realised it could serve their purposes as well. And eventually... So did the government.

You want to order pizza? WhatsApp. Want to contact a government agency? WhatsApp. Want to schedule a doctor's appointment? WhatsApp.

Now, I got my friends and family on Telegram, largely because Telegram has nicer features (still closed source though grumble grumble) but I still need WhatsApp for work. It's how I talk to everyone: The team, the boss, the contacts, etc.

They don't need to kill "every" lemmy/masto instance to kill the ecosystem. You just need to absorb enough of it that the only people left outside of your perversion of the ecosystem are certified weirdos.

E-Mail was (and still is) an open standard anyone could use. But after decades of getting EEE'd, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone using an E-Mail Not provided by the corporate giants, even like, other enterprises have rolled their e-mails into the Google/Microsoft ecosystems, and ALSO if you have an e-mail address that is outside those domains, normies who are inside the corporate ecosystem will have trouble communicating with you as your address will get autoflagged as spam more often than not.

VinesNFluff ,
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

I will concede on the "we are all weirdos" bit. Fair point.

because Fediverse users are so paranoid of even vaguely coexisting in an interconnected vicinity

(this is a good thing, megacorps corrupt all that they touch, actually by your own metric, if fear of Meta is what keeps the fediverse safe, than I say the best defence is for us to never stfu about it)

VinesNFluff ,
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

Definitely on that first one. Normies are all inside the GoogleMetaAmazonMicrosoft panopticon. If they are old they might still have a Yahoo Mail, but that's as spicy as it gets.

As for the second bit -- All evidence I have is purely anecdotal. My ProtonMail account works fine and no one ever complained about not getting mail from me, but I have heard stories of people who use mail accounts not from GMail/Outlook getting flagged as spammers and having trouble chatting with the normies (tm). Or having trouble creating accounts on sites because their e-mail is considered "not valid" by whatever system they put up on the shitty-ass site.

but once you’re used to it, you realize that info usually give you all the tools you need to fix your problem.

That's the thing right? I'm very much a non-tech person. But Linux error messages are nice and informative to the point that, even if I don't personally know what the fuck they are saying --

-- I can just copy them to my browser search bar. Oh look, someone else had the same issue. And someone who knew what they were talking about presented a solution. Nice, now I can get back to work!

And even when I am forced to troubleshoot on my own, the error messages and terminal logs often give enough of a clue that I can trial-and-error my way into making shit work.
