HP bricks ProBook laptops with bad BIOS delivered via automatic updates — many users face black screen after Windows pushes new firmware (www.tomshardware.com)

On May 26, a user on HP's support forums reported that a forced, automatic BIOS update had bricked their HP ProBook 455 G7 into an unusable state. Subsequently, other users have joined the thread to sound off about experiencing the same issue....

Weslee ,

Jeez, I am currently trying to install Linux on my HP ProBook and having issues with it - one thing I noticed was my bios was last updated in 2014 so I was going to see if updating helped... Might hold off on that now

A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's back (www.windowscentral.com)

It's a nightmare scenario for Microsoft. The headlining feature of its new Copilot+ PC initiative, which is supposed to drive millions of PC sales over the next couple of years, is under significant fire for being what many say is a major breach of privacy and security on Windows. That feature in question is Windows Recall, a...

Weslee ,

I'm using windows 11 and after hearing about recall and all the other shit they've done, I've finally decided to make the jump to Linux

So for atleast me, this was the final straw

Weslee ,

Lol. Okay whatever you say.

Weslee ,

Which distro did you end up on? I've been looking into them and after using steamos on my deck, I think I will go with Bazzite kde

Weslee ,

I get your point, and you're probably right for most, but I haven't purchased a premade desktop in a looong time - my current desktop I purchased the parts individually and installed windows manually

Weslee ,

Who's gonna tell them that the small islands are the first thing to go in the climate crisis

Weslee ,

Google, windows, and WhatsApp for me.

I've been slowly phasing out Google, and going to experiment with Linux on my old laptop, with the eventual goal of getting rid of windows on my pc

Weslee ,

"they" would probably opt for more efficient robots and just let us poor people die/kill each other

Pi.Alert is dead...💀 Long live NetAlert X 🚀 (network monitoring) (lemmy.world)

After thinking for about a year about it I decided to rename the project to 🚀NetAlertX. This will help prevent confusion about which fork someone is using, and differentiate it from the now stale upstream project. With about 1800 or so commits over the stale project, I thought, this project deserved a new name. It will also...

Monitors your lan and notifies you if any unknown devices connect

Weslee ,

"brave to improve even more"? Don't you mean stop being a shitty scummy company?

Weslee ,

Funny enough whenever I move house I always go with BT as the initial ISP, cause I've found they are best when things go wrong.

New house didn't have a phone line, waited a few days for the engineer, a 3rd party guy was here for a few hours and left without getting me online. About a week later a proper openreach engineer showed up and got me online within 20 minutes.

Weslee ,

Is it not tempting as a safe alternative to failure prone drives for long term storage?

Weslee ,

Can't pretty much any government get that info today by just requiring ISPs to give them the identities of anyone who visited X site

This just gives them more avenues I suppose

AI trained on bots and trolls is going to be sooooo helpful

Weslee ,

I gotta wonder if these people know that these kinds of laws will do nothing, and they are just pandering, or if they actually think this time they got it

Weslee ,

But somewhere down the line someone knows, either the lawmakers, or the advisors, or maybe they all know and it's just grandstanding to those of the public that don't know.

Really all this does is train the people with the drive or ability to learn things like DevOps to be even better at circumventing it, well this is not that hard, but generally, laws like this.

Weslee ,

America's IP addresses are governed by ARIN, how long until you see that name in headlines for controversy...

Weslee ,

Do you have any plans for user Auth and uploading via the web app?

Weslee ,

I haven't tried it yet, just moved and waiting for the internet to be installed.

I suppose any type of upload would work really, depends how "lightweight" you wanted to stay.

It's just a convenience feature

Weslee ,

Isn't that effectively the same thing for people wanting to not use WhatsApp, you'd still be using a different client to speak to people on whatsapp?

Constantly getting possible hack attempt floods from certain IP addresses.

This is infuriating that I continue to get this repeats of nine and more possible hack attempts from the same certain IP addresses blocked by Malwarebytes, which I get popups every time it happens. This is a snapshot from my logs after one has happened, and I also save text file logs of it....

Weslee ,
  1. You are seeing the logs on your pc, if the connections are hitting your pc then your router is not doing its job correctly and you need to look into it.
  2. If you don't have a static ip set up, try rebooting your router. Most ISPs will cycle you a new IP address.
  3. I don't think this is really a hack attempt, for one, no one hacks people using their true ip, and you said you spoke to them so
Weslee ,

Everything is crackable, I bet the software in the car is as cheaply made as everything else

Weslee ,

There is plenty of subscription or always online software out there that is cracked and fully working, Adobe products, Microsoft office, Spotify, etc.

Obviously any service that can't be replaced with a free or open source alternative won't work, first thing I think that would be on the chopping block would be anything that uses GPS, though that's just a guess, I don't really have intimate knowledge of this

Weslee ,

And the whole store stood up and clapped...
