I would need to see some alternates for Google Drive in that case.

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

I just signed up for that just to check it out and compare it, and it looks like upgrading the storage on it is more expensive than Google Drive.

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

Apparently, doing a sync with it just on my documents and photos, it ended up filling up the Proton Drive and giving hundreds of errors on one of my Windows 10 computers.

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

Sorry for not being more specific about what I need, I will explain it here.

With Google Drive, it gets assigned to a drive letter on my computer which is H: here and I'm not sure if any other Drive alternatives do that or not.

Right now, I currently pay $3 USD a month for 300 GBs of Google Drive space and they appear to go up with 5TBs for $25 USD a month and $10TBs for $50 USD a month.

I'm not interested in One Drive as that is Microsoft's Shit.

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

Some of those errors were about the drive being full.

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

Well, for one thing, I would want to find out if there is a way to mount a remote drive service to a drive letter on a Windows machine like Google Drive so that I can have it as a backup option that would keep my stuff privacy, and not scraped by some AI LLM.

KonalaKoala ,

I'm happy that I'm already using LibreWolf.

How about "X is about to start sending everyone to Mastodon".

A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's back (www.windowscentral.com)

It's a nightmare scenario for Microsoft. The headlining feature of its new Copilot+ PC initiative, which is supposed to drive millions of PC sales over the next couple of years, is under significant fire for being what many say is a major breach of privacy and security on Windows. That feature in question is Windows Recall, a...

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

For those of you that don't know about this OS and are tired of Microsoft's bullshit, you can look into supporting ReactOS as a true Windows alternative which needs it, and you feel you want to give the middle finger to Copilot, Copilot+ PC initiative, and Windows Recall. It can even be made to look like you have went back in time to the Windows XP era with the use of a theme and yet its not Windows, and could run things that you could already run in Windows 10. If even says you can fork it on Github, meaning you could choose to labor for months using it and Linux Technology to build a better OS to replace Windows using it and Linux Technology. And if you already going going FOSS by using Libra Office instead of Microsoft Office, LibraWolf instead of Firefox, and are currently looking to FOSS for your paint program and other things you use, why not look into going FOSS with your OS as well.

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

And don't forget to filter „xitter“ as that is probably also recommended.

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

And what about Paint.Net?

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

What about sending a certified letter to the company in question stating they better reverse the idiotic decision or be prepared to face a lengthy prison sentence for it?

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

I think LibreWolf is going to end up being the go-to browser at this rate.

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

Congratulations, you just identified yourself as a racist and need to understand you can't just judge someone without first getting to know them.

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

This seems like it could be the work of someone who doesn't want their webpage data being scraped and stolen by AI LLMs, that are using archive.org as some kind of method for bypassing paywalls.

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

While I have been reading through this topic, I have been feeling worried since I was thinking about using Cloudflare to protect a site of mine for some time. This is because I found out from somewhere that they have protection against AI LLMs scraping page data from websites, which is what I'm mainly worried about since there are things and stories that I put a lot of thought and work into. And finding out about Cloudflare shutting someone else down here over what sounds like the level of traffic has me feeling I might not be able to use them and not sure what other options there are.

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

This is mildly upsetting because I remember ICQ is where I first met a seer who I was referred to by someone else. This was back when I was looking for help regarding a number of strange dreams and spirit visitations I was dealing with.

At least this is not "Google Is Paying Lemmy $60 Million for Fucksmith to Tell Its Lemmings to Eat Glue" otherwise I would be wondering why Lemmy Admins are excepting huge wads of cash from tech giants.

Arizona accuses Amazon of being a monopoly and deceiving consumers with “dark patterns” (www.theverge.com)

Arizona's Attorney General, Kris Mayes, filed two lawsuits against Amazon on Wednesday for allegedly engaging in deceptive business practices and maintaining monopoly status. The first lawsuit accuses the company of using dark patterns to keep users from canceling their Amazon Prime subscriptions, violating Arizona's Consumer...

And now probably can't wait until someone accuses Facebook, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Twiiter/X, Reddit, etc., of similar anti-trust monopoly practices and give the fediverse the appearance of the only option to switch to.

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

Last time I heard a line like that is by Dark Helmet in Space Balls.

Sounds like its a case of Enshittification happening to that once useful website.

Well, here, I had clouds that had gotten in the way of the eclipse on Monday, even though it had gotten to a sliver of sun left before the moon moved away. I was able to see that there was dim sunlight here when there was a break in the clouds and seem mysterious in a way to me.

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

I just hope they don't come up with dead fediverse theory next.

@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

Not sure, but better hope that it doesn't disappear because this fox is fighting to get his domain back.

Koalawalla Woods

Hi folks! After a number of months of pondering this and having a recent incident happen a few days ago where I couldn't find another koala community, I had decided to go ahead and make a koala community on Lemmy. Since I'm already getting a lot of people checking it out, it seems Lemmy may have been in a dire need for this kind...

Reddit: 'We Are in the Early Stages of Monetizing Our User Base' (www.404media.co)

Reddit said in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission that its users’ posts are “a valuable source of conversation data and knowledge” that has been and will continue to be an important mechanism for training AI and large language models. The filing also states that the company believes “we are in the early...

Posting here because of the privacy implications of all this, but I wonder if at some point there should be an “Enshittification” community :-)

There is, its called !enshittification

Cory Doctorow wants to wipe away enshittification of tech (www.theregister.com)

Doctrow argues that nascent tech unionization (which we're closer to having now than ever before) combined with bipartisan fear (and consequent regulation) either directly or via agencies like the FTC and FCC can help to curb Big Tech's power, and the enshittification that it has wrought.

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe he is yelling "SHUT DOWN THIS TECH BEHEMOTH! YOUR ENSHITTIFICATION IS STARTING TO GET OUT OF HAND!"

Constantly getting possible hack attempt floods from certain IP addresses.

This is infuriating that I continue to get this repeats of nine and more possible hack attempts from the same certain IP addresses blocked by Malwarebytes, which I get popups every time it happens. This is a snapshot from my logs after one has happened, and I also save text file logs of it....

KonalaKoala OP ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

No, I don't have any ports forwarded to my PC from the internet as far as I'm aware.

KonalaKoala OP ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

It's more like an inbound connection that is triggering the alert.

KonalaKoala OP ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

Not that I can tell, this is what shows up in the logs of just one of the hack or scan attempts.

Well, I just went through some online instructions to setup an inbound rule in Windows Defender Firewall that is a list of IPs to have it block, hoping that will solve this ongoing problem I was having.

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

Well then, just hope that your neighbor doesn't turn around to pair into your device and blast porn at full volume on your TV, get you pissed off as to WTF you can't turn it off, end up throwing the whole thing into the Recycle Bin, and look into some kind of CRT TV that can't be f***ed with like you are also pissed off with the current company that produces the current flat screen stuff.

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

Not sure what anecdote is, but I'm actually quite upset about these shenanigans the companies that produce the current flat screen stuff they allow to happen in the first place.

KonalaKoala ,
@KonalaKoala@lemmy.world avatar

The result you may get then is "I am... Locutus of Enshittification. Resistane... is futile. You life, as it has been... is over. From this time forward... you will service... us" which may make you go "Lock on and file all weapons on full!'
