100% with you on the new hires thing. Was remote in college and have been for all my jobs. Maybe its a case of the grass is always greener but I would much prefer to predominantly work from an office. Maybe not 5x a week nor a sizeable commute but I feel like I'm missing out on a lot of career growth, networking, and team cohesion. As an OSS contributor, homelab hobiest, and adhd experiencer, I find it difficult to sepererate my headspaces and get into work mode.

far more processor intensive than the most advanced AIs we currently have

This is the second comment I've seen from you where you confidently say something incorrect. Maybe stop trying to be orator of the objective and learn a little more first.

YIj54yALOJxEsY20eU ,

I think the claim that 24 year old technology is more computationally intensive than the ground breaking tech of the modern day needs the citation.

I saved this comment when I read it, not remembering the last time I would've needed it. Two days later and I had to use it, thanks!!

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I'm sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I'm sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I'm sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it's been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one back?

YIj54yALOJxEsY20eU ,

Yeah I've been very happy with Gboard recommendations, I disabled networking for the app since I'm using GrapheneOS and it still does great. Even voice to text is scary good, just have to download the model before disabling networking.

It would solve two of your problems though, that's a pretty good bargain.

YIj54yALOJxEsY20eU ,

Posting on the google store sucks, they make you jump through hoops and will collect data. If the app is already open source, there is no good reason to put it on the google play store.

Also, I don't really understand the point of the term side loading when Android doesn't prevent you to from adding other software sources. It feels like it carries connotations when all you are doing is adding a very well established open source software repository.

This is the best comment I've read on Lemmy in the 6 months I've been here.

The people need to know how you use 13GB of ram worth of containers for web dev.

How are we supposed to kiss when I don't even know what Linux distro you run

Linux market share passes 4% for first time (arstechnica.com)

We see the nearly 33-year-old OS’s market share growing 31.3 percent from June 2023, when we last reported on Linux market share, to February. Since June, Linux usage has mostly increased gradually. Overall, there's been a big leap in usage compared to five years ago. In February 2019, Linux was reportedly on 1.58 percent of...

No doubt it's the most widely run OS, I think the significance is akin to the difference between ios and android. Android dominates smart phones as a whole but ios still generates far more revenue, giving them arguably more power. So while linux is more widely used, microsoft still dictates computing for the majority of people.

YIj54yALOJxEsY20eU ,

Thank you for your service, I've spent many hours on that app.

If I could run Wayland with Nvidia I would actually go to the trouble of configuring Nix.

I've been getting these types of recommendations as well but unfortunately I've only seen one good one, for the most part they are low quality/beginner content. I like the effort though. I'd pay for premium if they tried to get back to early YouTube, restored the dislike button, fixed the search functionality, only recommend videos related to what im watching, and didn't optimize their algorithm to murder my attention span.

YIj54yALOJxEsY20eU ,

Love me some clean code. Just please don't look at the function definition or ever expect me to change my pyramid of abstractions.

YIj54yALOJxEsY20eU ,

I don't think a proprietary forum that requires an email address to view information is equivalent to lemmy. It's publicly accessible, open source, and can be federated. Matrix still requires some kind of account to view information if I remember correctly.

YIj54yALOJxEsY20eU ,

While I think its a huge deal to require email addresses for publically accessible information, the rest is true. Although, upvotes and and different posts can help cut a lot of that crap. Also offers the ability to be indexed. I personally still throw the word reddit at the end of a search if I really can't find anything and one of the top comments usually has what I need. I agree though, not perfect or optimal for the task, just better than discord.

They said copyright infringement is hidden in AI tools, not that AI inherently infringes copyrights.
