My friends who are self-proclaimed history nuts essentially only read hagiographies.

Props to Alpine and Kali for disabling this bullshit out of the box (lemmy.world)

Context for newbies: Linux refers to network adapters (wifi cards, ethernet cards, etc.) by so called "interfaces". For the longest time, the interface names were assigned based on the type of device and the order in which the system discovered it. So, eth0, eth1, wlan0, and wwan0 are all possible interface names. This, however,...

I miss seeing this meme format on Lemmy. It's so good, and this one is no exception.

A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's back (www.windowscentral.com)

It's a nightmare scenario for Microsoft. The headlining feature of its new Copilot+ PC initiative, which is supposed to drive millions of PC sales over the next couple of years, is under significant fire for being what many say is a major breach of privacy and security on Windows. That feature in question is Windows Recall, a...

I haven't found a suitable replacement yet. I know this is somewhat niche but nothing on Linux can do batch management of Keywords as well as Bridge or Lightroom. I wish I knew anything about C to contribute.

Put solar panels in parking lots and on buildings, where the humans live, not in fragile ecosystems. Deserts aren't bereft of life, they are filled with some of the most resilient and charismatic flora and fauna known. Joshua trees and the Mojave have it bad enough already.

apfelwoiSchoppen ,
@apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world avatar

And even in places where it is happening, it is still extremely rare for a parking lot to have solar panels. Legislation is needed.

Ticketmaster confirms data breach with a SEC filing - Stack Diary (stackdiary.com)

Quote: "To put it bluntly, a single credential resulted in the exfiltration of potentially hundreds of companies that stored their data using Snowflake, with the threat actor himself suggesting 400 companies are impacted. The goal of the threat actor, as in most cases, was to blackmail Snowflake into buying their own data back...

Ticketmaster should die in a fire and all their execs from the last 30 years should be imprisoned.

We need hardware requirements so that not just pixel phones can get grapheneOS. Giving into Google hardware to escape Google software is a step I don't want to take. I'll take calyxOS or divestOS until then.

apfelwoiSchoppen ,
@apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, hardware requirements for Android need to be higher. That's the only way you get other manufacturers.

I'm old enough to remember when algorithm was co-opted to be a fancy word replacement for "computer programming" or "software".

Google juices reddit posts now so no need to throw that shit in anymore. There were recent news articles about it coming from the antitrust case against the company. Now many folks use "-reddit" for how bad reddit is these days clogging up search.

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

I recently installed Nobara with Nvidia on my three year old alienware desktop because of Windows 11 turning to advertising shit. Nobara is finicky enough that I might jump over to PopOS. Lots of shearing and frame skips in video, let alone in gaming. I don't have this issue on my other laptop with PopOS on it.

Are you referring to the additional installs in the Nobara Welcome App?

Tesla’s in its flop era (www.theverge.com)

When Tesla releases its first quarter earnings this afternoon, the company’s CEO Elon Musk will field the usual questions about new products, new factories, and progress toward its futuristic vision of self-driving cars and robot workers. But Musk will also face increasingly urgent questions about its current state of affairs...

I did the install yesterday, I'll know in time. I'm not the most extreme gamer, I am not interested in competitive gaming or bleeding edge tech spec games. I think that's where you see the most backlash to Linux for gaming. I will definitely be chiming in with my experience here on Lemmy.

    This 16-bit looking shit ad that I didn't ask for and can't remove unless I choose yes or no was the last straw for me. Baking Language Model AI (Copilot) is nothing I want, just like I didn't want Cortana, or Edge. Or the dark pattern requests to consider edge. Nor the new Windows setup screen that sometimes occurs after an update which is just a sly way of shoving another option to make Edge my default browser again.

    I've moved my laptop to Linux around December. Now I'm going to move my gaming PC over to Linux. I'm just done.

    These assholes forget that people need to use VPNs in many situations. All the bitch ass corporate folks that never have to use their computers in a coffee shop, etc. Fuck spez.

    Then Reddit's notice should say that instead of scolding sbout VPNs. This problem is not simply with Reddit and a login, it is pervasive. Hell, even lemmy.world blocks vpn connections from making new comments, often.

    apfelwoiSchoppen ,
    @apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world avatar

    Yes, it briefly mentions it but the entirety of that is about shaming VPN use. Is it not?

    apfelwoiSchoppen ,
    @apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world avatar

    Wtf do you think "network policy" is about when it comes up when using fucking VPNs? It is entirely about VPN use.
