X automatically changed 'Twitter' to 'X' in domain names, breaking legit URLs (mashable.com)

On Monday, it appears X attempted to encourage users to cease referring to it as Twitter and instead adopt the name X. Some users began noticing that posts viewed via X for iOS were changing any references of "Twitter.com" to "X.com" automatically....

bitchkat ,

Work "friends" or also known as colleagues. Sometimes you just make do.

bitchkat ,

X is a window system not a window manager. The window manager is a client application that talks to the X server.

bitchkat ,

I immediately thought of the good old Scheiffler and Gettys book: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51YpMj4WSPL._SL500_.jpg

bitchkat ,

Tell me you didn't read the article without telling me you didn't read the article.

bitchkat ,

EU uses the WLTP method of testing range and its way more optimistic that the process we use in the USA.

bitchkat ,

My last two jobs require(d) me to run windows. At one, I spent 95% of my time in a Linux VM so it was more tolerable.

bitchkat ,

Usually just VirtualBox VM's -- i've never touched WSL except for the original version way back in the 90's I think.

bitchkat ,

I was thinking of the earlier incantation called Windows Services for Unix.

bitchkat ,

I'm leaving that up because its kind of funny how I mangled that.

bitchkat ,

Are you guys installing the extension pack? That's when the licensing weenies get to work. My old job ended up blocking oracle.com which was really fun for trying to read java docs. I would have to set up an ssh tunnel to my home server in order to download vbox release.

bitchkat ,

We had one in Minneapolis at the Mall of America when it opened. It had a great selection but I was still partial to Cheapo, Northern Lights, and Positively 4th St. Cheapo is still around and I stop in there a few times a year. The other 2 closed down a long time ago -- possibly before MOA opened in the early 90's I think,

bitchkat ,

They do not. But they are the best place to buy TVs IMHO.

bitchkat ,

Hopefully not too many people thinking that NN bans bandwidth caps.

bitchkat ,

I think its just more that they aren't super common in parts of the US, especially colder climates. I've only seen one and that was parents who got it as a supplemental system.

bitchkat ,

Do you have a newsletter I can sign up for?

bitchkat ,

Or Gnu plus Hurd as I've been recently calling it.

bitchkat ,

I am shocked that its that low. But I manage a website for a sports league and they want to display sponsor logos on the front page. They were all getting caught by my adblocker. When I talked to other board members, none of them used ad blockers. I debated if I should try and adjust the urls or not.

bitchkat ,

experienced just means they've been doing it for some time, it says nothing about how well they do it.

bitchkat ,

Prisoners.

bitchkat ,

I have an external CD/DVD player that is used solely to rip CDs and add to my media server. I abhor renting music and ripping a CD gives me the format and quality I like (!1000kbps flac) and future proofs me if tech limits change down the road. I used to rip to ogg but a few years ago I reripped about 500 CDs to flac.

bitchkat ,

I never purchased a single cassette the entire time they were popular. I would buy records and tape them ( I was a Maxell person but did have some TDK) so that I could listen in the car or in my giant boombox that had APLD which was skip to next song.

bitchkat ,

My first CD I bought in the mid 80's still plays fine. The selection of CDs was paltry and the only thing I could find at my parent's town that I was remotely interested in was ZZ Top's Eliminator.

bitchkat ,

I tried Spotify but it only has about 70% of the albums in my collection. I used to love google play music because you could upload your media and it would be included in your library.

bitchkat ,

ION TT-USB master race!

bitchkat ,

I had a friend with the cassette adapter for his 8 track player. I just brought my boombox with me in high school. It sounded better than the shitty stereo that came with my dad's 1972 Mercury Capri.

bitchkat ,

And later due to lack of options, I bought Fabulous Thunderbirds "Tuff Enuf".

bitchkat , (edited )

Plex and plexamp is how I listen to music now.

bitchkat ,

the in app purchases are mainly if you want to buy PlexPass which unlocks additional features. I bought the lifetime pass years ago when it was on sale for $75 so I can't quite remember which features require plex pass. Its primarily for video but the music section with Plexamp on my phone and laptop is a nice little bonus.

bitchkat ,

Are you including back in the day when we had to use windows device drivers via ndiswrappers?

I've managed to remove a critical library once but did manage to extract it from an RPM on another machine and manually install it. That was good enough to get me to the point where I could yum reinstall.

Pre-linux we had an HP workstation where the disc drive died and of course we had no backups. I managed to frankenstein the disc by connecting the platters on the broken disc to the circuit board of a working disc. This worked and I was able to back up the disk and reload on to a new drive.

And then we bought an 8mm tape drive for backups and I had to port some drivers to HP-UX to get it to work. But we had awesome backups after that!

bitchkat ,

I have taken a drive with filesystem issues, mounted on a different machine and either backup data I wanted to keep or copy files to make the original machine runnable.

bitchkat ,

I just told this story to a friend but I did the standard rm -rf * as root while in the / directory. And this was back in the day where we nfs mounted every other machine and root privileges propagated through NFS. I think it was on the 2nd or 3rd machine when I thought -- "this seems to be taking longer than I thought".

bitchkat ,

Generally if you remove a file, it won't affect programs that already have it open. So if you delete libc, hope that you don't lose power. If worse comes to worst, you'll need to pull the drive and mount it on another machine.

bitchkat ,

Its very few cars that are not FSD capable, mostly older S and X. There are some older model 3's (pre spring 2019) with hardware version 2 that I think can't run modern FSD.

bitchkat ,

I split my service visits between Tesla and a local shop depending on what I need done. When my son destroyed the suspension on a curb, that went to the local shop. When my skid plate ripped, Tesla did that because mobile service is so convenient. I've actually found Tesla's labor costs to be very reasonable.

bitchkat ,

You only got the V2 to V3 upgrade if you bought FSD. I don't think they blanket upgraded everyone with V2 or V2.5 hardware.

bitchkat ,

Its hard for them to sell you FSD at $12k (or $199/mo) if the hardware can't support it.

bitchkat ,

I've had things like my audio controller replaced and it was like $30 for labor. Same for a lot of other things.

bitchkat ,

And that is fair. Otherwise someone could subscribe to FSD, get their hardware upgrade and then cancel. Early S and maybe X used a completely different system for Autopilot developed by MobileEye. Tesla hates paying licenses so they drop Mobile Eye and started developing their in house AP/FSD. The MobileEye patents are why it took for ever to get a system that can read speed limit signs. But Mobile Eye was never released on Model 3 so there must have been some different cameras in use. Hardware 4 has more cameras and higher def but I haven't heard that they are upgrading hardware 3 cars. The scale of that is way larger than it was back in 2019.

bitchkat ,

These are the speeds the ISP advertises:

https://www.radiolinkinternet.com/Plans.html

I don't know much about WISP but I suspect speed will vary based on distance and line of site to towers and how congested they are.

bitchkat ,

The problem is more likely the wireless internet provider.

bitchkat ,

Even if I wasn't better off financially now, not having that shitstain as president would make be much better off overall.

bitchkat ,

We have had vaccine mandates for decades in order to do things like have kids attend school.

bitchkat ,

Its kind of the same choice as needed to get a driver's license to operate a vehicle.

bitchkat ,

I am so glad we have a microcenter in my city.

bitchkat ,

Cheap stereos when they were Sound of Music.

bitchkat ,

You can always post the video of my custom chargeport cover. That earned me a couple of bans - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fXJCXQJzj0
